In a small outskirt town in the middle of nowhere, a disagreement was happening. Times were changing left and right in this area, and while the town was slowly losing people to bigger and better places, big changes were on the horizon. A very big, sometimes snobby, very gassy horizon.

Evan was standing at the front desk of Berring Co. The owner Darrel Berring had been especially good to him for years. But now he felt like he’d just been spit in the face as he looked at the receptionist in front of him holding a bag of coins. Normally he’d have been flustered by how pretty she was, but with what she was holding he couldn’t care less as his jaw locked tight. The young man grabbed the small bag of coins and opened it. Counting twelve silver pieces, all bearing an image of the Four-Armed God of the Dwarves. Lord of Business, Parties, Honesty, and Inventions. His upper right hand held a contract, his lower right holding a glass of alcohol, often hotly contested by scholars whether it was dwarven Ale or Alraune Wine, his upper left held a small hammer called a Gavel, his lower left hand dangled a strange contraption. A favorite toy for many Dwarves and curious inventors, a dual spinner. A tiny ball with a North and South that could be activated with the tiniest bit of magic and thrown, it would always right itself as the tiny environment or painting inside spun. But now… the God seemed to be mocking Evan.

He was not a devout believer in any of the Gods, though he always tried to pray to the Great Pantheon. This area was far from the control of the All-Mother’s Faith.  Here she was known as the Golden Goddess, though many still chose to worship her as the Goddess of the Seas here. Evan had heard from his Father that on the main Human continent Ariza, the Golden Goddess’ Faith had taken over and reverence of the other gods was pushed back as her Church proclaimed she was the sole true divinity. There were even wars over it before ceasefires were called. Evan thought it was foolish, but it was said that when Humanity was at its lowest after the Second Divine War. The Mother of Waves and the Depths took Humanity and held them to her breasts as she ascended into the Golden Goddess while the other Gods left humanity behind to flounder. Evan smiled for a second as he remembered his Father’s long-winded ramblings, till that happiness became an ache, and then anger as he remembered where he was.

“Mr. Gallaows?” The cute receptionist said her longer pointed ears and slightly pink skin showed she was a Half breed with a Moon Elf parent. She always wore two cute earrings in the shape of the moon and had a little crystal on her forehead. Even with her bland uniform, Evan thought it always made her look too pretty for this small town of farmers, mostly populated with Humans and Orcs with a few Domesticated Goblins. Whenever an Elf or Demon entered town it always made waves. This time though, Evan just stared at her with his jaw set tight.

“Is this a joke or something?” He asked finally. She looked at him nervously. It obviously wasn’t. He may have been taller than her and rather toned from a life of farmwork, but he was raised better than that. “Sorry. I just- this is a lot less than what I was promised. Is Mr. Berring here?” However, before he could even finish, Mr. Berring stepped out. Dressed in fancier clothes than the Half-Elf Receptionist, though her natural beauty still stole the show compared to the older Human with a bit of a bald spot.

“Hello, Evans. Forgive me for taking a while. I had to find a pen for Dot to-“

“Darrel this is less than half what I needed!” Evan held the bag of coins up as Mr. Berring gave a quick look to his employee. The Half Moon Elf nodded and quickly went through the door he’d emerged from and disappeared.

“Forgive me, Evans. I didn’t mean to offend you. That was the best price I could do for Dot given the circumstances.”

“But he’s my last horse! A Stallion should have gone for at least three Gold if not five! This is robbery!” Evans held out the bag, the twelve silver coins clinking in agreement with him. Mr. Berring didn’t look offended in the slightest, instead, he gently grabbed the young man’s shoulder.

“Evans… Sit down, please. I can get you some water or fresh juice, perhaps a lemonade?”

“No… Sir. I want to know where the rest of my pieces are. You know I have no chance of keeping the farm at this rate!” Evan held his temper. Something his Mother said he’d inherited from his Father.

“Here son, just take a seat.” Mr. Berring pulled a chair out, soft and well-finished. No doubt at least a few silver. “I had- no, I have no intention of shortchanging you. But I need to make a profit myself and Dot just isn’t worth much to me right now. The new Lord is trying his best, but you’ve seen how the businesses are running dry. Soon it will be nothing but farmers keeping their land. Everyone’s got horses of their own to give and sell. What people want right now is protection as news of Wolves and Bandits keeps spreading from town to town, and we’ve got no adventures here.” Mr. Berring explained calmly. Evan listened, but he didn’t understand why that meant his last horse was so much cheaper than expected.

“I’m having a hard time myself trying to sell Horses, no matter how good, to people that already have dozens. I might barely get two Gold for Dot myself, and I have a business to run and employees to pay. And that was before the news of the Belise Merchanary Company sending out an envoy to these lands. The prices of horses are going to-“

“What’s the Belise Company? And the hells a Merchanary?” Evan interrupted. Mr. Berring didn’t look offended in the slightest, simply having a drink of water before he continued.

“The Belise Company is a powerful company expanding in all directions from the Agori plains. They are primarily a primarily Demihuman company, though Humans, Beast Kin, and even Monsters are welcome so long as they are capable of understanding and working. They are mostly Centaurs, though I’ve heard they recently began expanding and hiring Harpies and even a few Dragonoids and a Dragoness.” Evan listened to it all, Evan listened to it all, surprised to hear such a powerful company had set its sights on this small town. With barely three hundred people at a time counting travelers, it was basically a village were it not for its size. And a Dragonoid? Evan had seen one before a few years back, a hulking beast of a man over eight feet tall without his horns. He looked like a grand lizard got up on two legs and put clothes on! But his voice commanded everyone’s attention when he spoke as if the earth was moving beneath them. He showed the few children of the town tricks with his strength and even breathed blue lightning into the air which shocked all the adults and made the children scream with glee. Evan smiled at the memory; it was the last happy one he had with his Father…

“As for what a Merchanary Company is. Surely you’ve heard of that before Evans?” Mr. Berring continued. Evan shook his head no. “Ah, no problem. They are quick to fail after all. Just shows how good this Mr. Belise is to run such a powerful and quickly growing company too. A Merchanary Company is a dual model company, focusing on Trade, and supplying arms. Though I suppose the Belise Company would be a Tri-model company as they also do tons of transport jobs from what I’ve heard.”

“Arms? Like weapons?”

“And the people who use those weapons, Son. Merchants and Mercenaries together. That’s a Merchanary, though they are often quick to fail as when the Wars start to fade, the Trade isn’t enough to keep the company going and they turn Bandit and get hunted down soon after.”

“And because these… Merchanaries set their sights on the town. The price of horses is dropping?”

“Indeed Son. You ever met a Centaur?”

“No… None have visited our town I’ve never seen one.”

“Mhm. Centaurs are quite something. But Centaurs usually carve out a territory and just roam there. The Agori plains have been Centaur lands for centuries if not longer I heard. All different kinds are welcome there, though you’ll usually only see normal Centaurs if you visit. But staying on track. The average Centaur can do everything the Average horse can do, but twice as effectively. They are stronger, faster, and of course far smarter. Now from the few Centaurs I’ve met, they can often be a bit aloof, and they don’t handle change very well. But when they focus on something, they are locked in and like a rampaging bull they won’t stop.” Evan nodded, if that was true… Then a Centaur could do the work of two horses at once and do the job of the farmer as well! One Centaur would be worth two horses and their keeper at once! If a Centaur asked for a gold coin a month they’d still be worth it if you could afford that.

“Mhm. Though I’ve heard they have a bit of a problem with their attitudes, some are standoffish and some are too skittish, and they eat quite a lot too. But even with that. As you can see Evans if the Belise Company is coming here and bringing some Centaurs with them. The prices of Horses will drop a ton, they’d pretty much be good only as pets and mounts as long as you can afford to hire a Centaur.”

“I see… that’s.” Evan tightened his grip on the bag of Silver. “That’s fair Sir. I’m sorry I was so angry.”

“No no Evans it’s okay Son. I’d have been even angrier if I were your age and didn’t know why I got less than I wanted.”

“Thank you Mr. Berring. Have a good day. ” Evan stood up and made for the door.

“Wait Evans. My previous offer still stands! I hate to see you alone out there Son. Your Father and I may not have been very close. But he was a good man and you are too. Horses I already have too much of, but a Barn? A farm? A great future employee? Those I am willing to spend the Golds to get.
