3D model of a spotted dryad

High poly model

Low poly model

Today I will show you the default model of the spotted dryad from my game. What does “default” mean, why are there two models, and why the spotted one?

The default model of the spotted dryad will have a skeleton and a set of animations and it will be used to create all characters of spotted dryads, and they will differ in skin and eye textures, hairstyles and clothing. There are a lot of spotted dryads in the game: Varvara and Faeena Shay, matriarch Violetta Moray, Dunyashka Shay and other NPCs that will be encountered in the course of the story. And everyone will be using this low poly template. Of course, depending on the age will change the proportions and height of the model, but still. The main customization tools for spotted dryads, as I wrote earlier, will be hairstyles, clothing, skin color and texture, and eye color. This will result in the creation of many dryads based on a single template. I do this to save a monstrous amount of time, because if I make an animation for a template model, it can be used by all the dryad characters in the game.

You can also see high poly and low poly 3D models. Since I am creating a computer game and not a pre-render, video or cinematic, I will use low poly model because it has less polygons, weighs less and requires less hardware power for real-time rendering. Using low poly models is the most standard for the game industry. However, high poly models are also necessary, they are used to bake maps, which are then stretched on the low poly model, because of which the game model weighs less, and is better optimized, and looks like a full-fledged high poly model with all the bulges, hollows, fur, nails, skin folds and so on. For reference, the high poly model weighs 595k polygons and the low poly model weighs 2,750. Although you can see everything on the screenshots yourself.

Well, the spotted dryad is because other dryads (and other nymphaids, including satyresses and fauns) differ anatomically from the spotted ones. For example, archipelago and desert dryads have long, thin tails, and archipelago dryads also have scales on parts of their bodies. They practically don't participate in the game's plot, so I won't make template model for them.

I will also post a post for gold subscribers one of these days, where I will give more information and show the skeleton of a low poly dryad. Also don't forget that all paid posts become free after three months, so anyone can read the future post, except you have to wait. And if you don't want to wait, you can always become a goldie!
