I thought the same as you, like it's not simple as her dying to White Whale because she couldn't beat it, but then again, we see that there is more of whales so who knows...

So I guess Theresia was killed outside of the fog. Some comments about the Witch's appearance... I have been thinking the same thing as you, that Satella is a future version of Emilia from a timeline (worldline?) gone wrong. Return by Death is a power that reverses time so it would make sense that time travel could be involved... Finally a note about the magic chants they use that the novel explains: there are certain words for elemental attacks (so far we've seen "Fura" for wind, "Goa" for fire, "Huma" for water, and "Shamak" for darkness), and the word you say in front of it makes the spell stronger. The words are El, Ul, and Al. So for Goa, it would go like: Goa, El Goa, Ul Goa, Al Goa.
