I once saw an interview with Phil Collins where he claimed that when they brought up the idea of him taking over as the lead singer of Genesis, the first thing he said was, “I’m not wearing the Slipperman costume.”
I also saw an interview with Peter Gabriel where he talked about a Genesis gig in Scotland where he came out on stage for the first time wearing a fox mask and a red dress. He said that it seemed to really upset the audience, which pleased him.
What I’m getting at is that, as a twenty-something, Peter Gabriel was not concerned with looking “cool.”
He also used to shave the front of his head. He chose to have a receding hairline. I wonder if he regrets that, now that he’s had one thrust upon him. I also wonder if Phil resented it at the time.
