Fight serials like Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, Bleach, My Hero Academia and Inu-Yasha tend to run for literally hundreds and hundreds of episodes (One Piece just crossed a thousand 😱 ) like comic books or soap operas, where there’s no need to wrap up a plot arc before bringing another one on. Unfortunately, due to the success of DBZ, they tend to be the only anime shows shown on dubbed TV in the US, and fans complain about, quote, “Narutards” who have literally never heard of or talk about any series except for their one fight favorite. If you’re going streaming, you’ve got access to a whole wild toybox of genres, so don’t end up chained to the same genre ghetto as the cable-TV victims.

2022-04-21 21:04:23 +0000 UTCSpeaking as one who was there since the days when anime was an underground college-campus VHS and laserdisc cult, WITHOUT subtitles or dubs ( 😮 ), if you’re going Crunchyroll, they’ve got an exclusive bit of history where it all started for us: The five long-lost movie spinoffs from the Urusei Yatsura TV series, a classic long-running comedy from the Project A-ko animators, and very much in the same crazy style. (The second movie, “Beautiful Dreamer”, is considered next to Ghibli films as one of the greatest anime ever made.) Just mention the heroine, cute alien high-school transfer student Lum Invader, to an old-school fan, and see what happens. 🥰 Another history lesson is the days when Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura were airing on afternoon TV in the early 90's as “strange” little-girls’ cartoons…But we insiders were watching both from the source, and trying to get the outside world to watch “Sailor Moon R: the Movie” (no, that’s the title, it’s rated G), to show them why it was addictively better than it looked.
