This book was my childhood. I read it so many times, watched the BBC version more times that I can count, so when I heard that they were doing a "modern" remake off the success of Lord of the Rings, I couldn't wait. And with the exception of a few very small things, this movie is one of the most faithful adaptations of a book I've seen in a long time. I can't recommend highly enough reading this series with your kids one day.
Yes, it has religious overtones - the author, C.S. Lewis was a Christian, and he very clearly wrote the series to be a Christian allegory for children, but really anyone of all ages can enjoy diving into Narnia.
I remember watching this in theaters for the first time and being thrilled by how true they were being, but being terrified that Aslan wouldn't live up to my imagination as to what he would be like. As far as I was concerned, Aslan would make or break the movie for me. They reached the scene where they met Aslan for the first time, and I held my breath. Aslan stepped out of the tent and he looked and moved like a lion, so my heart started racing... and then he opened his mouth and Liam Nieson's voice came out? I was thrilled - Aslan sounded EXACTLY like I always envisioned he would, even before I knew who Liam Nieson was - and I knew there wasn't any doubt.
I'm so upset that they haven't finished out the series - there are seven books total, but they've only made this one, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. You may not find the other two on Disney, because I'm pretty sure 20th Century Fox took over production of the other two after this one. For some reason, any attempt to do a decent adaptation of the series always seems to stall out at The Silver Chair. :(
