Status Update

Hello again,

Sorry for the week of silence. I was waiting until I knew my schedule and could tell you I was working on the game again. Unfortunately, the work I'd put in the game over the past month started catching up with me a bit. I had to step back from the game and put some serious time into my day job (boring, I know). I finished things up on that end and have another good window to get things done here. I'm pretty damn excited to get back to it! So, basically, t-minus 9 days until the end of the month. The June release I was aiming for back at the beginning of May won't happen in 9 days, the game is not in a place for that, but I still feel that getting a release out the door will be a really positive step in the right direction. I also am really happy with how the game is looking and playing in MV.

Thanks,
YT

I think this is one of the major issues that has had Aylia's story in an infinite development cycle. Until he is willing to let go and get a release out, this will continue indefinitely. You're not going to convince him though. He will continue to think it's not good enough, because that's how it has been for several years now. Though it's possible it's still in a non functioning state. I remember when most of the game was in word docs or something. That was one hell of a revelation.

I knew a dev who made an award-winning game in SK, he spent the next 8 years working on the sequel, rebuilt it several times, changed major code, and then upgraded the engine twice. Eventually, the game never came to a full release and he lost out on all the money and goodwill that he had gained from his last few releases. Don't fall into that trap. It's worse than putting out the game early as well, but when it comes to indie games it's best to work on smaller entries than trying to complete a grand epic.

You're going to have to learn the really hard lesson all software folks learn: Software is NEVER "ready" and it is never "done". It is sometimes "good enough", though. Please, please, for your sanity and for ours, focus on packaging up the release and not on improving or adding anything else. Just get it out the door. Yes, it will be smaller than you'd like, but that's fine and expected. Get it released! After that start adding patches and improvements and get into a rhythm. But you absolutely MUST learn to just cut the damned cord and make a release. There's an old engineering maxim: "Better is the enemy of Good Enough." It's 100% true.

Good thing that you are happy with how it looks and plays, Yummy. That's the best motivation. And we all might profit in the end. Hope you continue to have fun working on your game! I am sure this can still be a great success.
