December Update

Hello everyone!

For my fellow Americans, hopefully you had a good thanksgiving! Before I get into the update, it's important that I inform you of Patreon changes to billing. Patreon is shifting the burden of paying processing fees from creators to pledgers. Meaning, creators will no longer pay 7-15% (depending on amount pledged) when pledges are collected. This means that a $1 pledge becomes a $1.40 pledge after paying 2.9% + 0.35c in processing fees.

Personally, I don't fully understand the reasoning behind this shift, as people pledge what they feel comfortable doing, so raising that amount with fees seems sketchy. I understand that this is not a money grab by Patreon, or at least people tell me it's not, but it's about providing a stable, consistent stream of revenue. I get that, but I still fall in the camp that someone pledging $10 should pay exactly $10.

Patreon has received some backlash over these changes, so there is a possibility that things will get reversed. That said, in light of these changes I'm modifying reward tiers to be $1, $4, $9, $19, and $48. This way, if you pledge the reward tier amount, it should end up fairly close to what the tier pledge would have been prior to the change. The only exception is the $1 tier because there is not much I can do with that one. Please message me if you have any questions regarding these changes.

On to the monthly update. Patrons know that a small alpha update was released a few days back. This was not the update I'd promised and it was definitely not worthy of a pledge. As such, it ended up being a proof-of-progress 0.11 while I finish editing and finalizing all the content I want in 0.12. There were a number of patrons who reported bugs (some of which were quite comical) and those have been resolved to the best of my knowledge.

As you can see from the update picture, I've unlocked and started editing the night time events. Each time you finish a quest, the game will shift to night. Each night, Aylia will be presented with the choice of going back to Bogwort's house or going somewhere in town. Each option will be important to developing the game, and they will not be setup in a way that if you choose one, you miss out on the other. Granted, you won't see ALL of them in a single playthrough, because they change based on your choices. Expect to see these events in 0.12.

Finally, you should also expect a pledged post this month. Meaning, you will be charged at the beginning of January. This is based on the assumption that I will release 0.12 this month and it will be big enough to warrant a pledged update. I do want to stress that this pledged update is NOT for 0.12, but for the following release. Given that pledges are only ran at the beginning of the month, pledges to YTGaming will occur prior to upcoming releases. As I said before, the first major update is free. This is also one of the reasons I offer a full refund of your last pledge. Since you pay prior to seeing the content, if you ultimately see that content and are unsatisfied, you can request a refund. Again, the pledged update will only be run if I release a sizable update this month.

What to expect this month:

1. The release of 0.12

2. A patron poll for game content (after 0.12 is released)

3. The first high resolution art pack (after 0.12 is released)

4. A pledged post (if 0.12 is released)

5. A lore post on either Escala or Trellion (post if you have a preference)

Thank you for your continued support. I will do everything I can to give you a worthy Christmas present. I'm on a "no video game" plan until 0.12 is released, as those damn video games are just too fun. Since I'm anticipating getting the Shadows of Mordor sequel for Christimas, it's imperative that I get 0.12 done so I can play it! :-)

P.S. Going forward, the beginning of the month updates will be public and teasers, minor updates, polls, etc. will be patron-only. It was brought to my attention that people who've dropped pledges or are considering pledging have no way of following progress.

so yummy hows it going, now that jan is almost over, wondering when we will see the 0.12 :) i comment on this public one since im not a patreon :)

First, I didn't lock PMs from anyone. If it is locked, then it is a Patreon default that I am unaware of. I will check into it. Second, I STILL have a only charge when/if I actually deliver. That has not changed. I'm not sure how someone who doesn't collect money can be a "scammer." Third, I have not seen a request for proper access to Discord. There are two mods on almost all the time who can grant access, and I can as well. I know for sure that PMs work fine there. Finally, I'll refund your money in a moment. That charge was for Hunter's Quest which WAS delivered as promised. Anyways, I hope you find the game you're looking for, and thank you for your patronage. EDIT: It looks like I can't message anyone who is not a patron, which means Patreon probably limits all PMs to patron-only? Also, since I can't PM you, I have no record of you pledging in 2016. Are you sure you joined prior to that pledge? If you joined anytime after April 2016, you have not been charged anything. I just realized you said you joined after the HQ release, which means you have not pledged anything at this point. There is nothing to refund.

Well, since you've locked pm's from non/former patrons, placing this here (just dropped my pledge). Refund request. Been around since right after the HQ trans release, and this has gotten past ridiculous. I was a fan of the 'only charge when/if I actually deliver' policy that you originally had, but you've changed that over to multiple times per chapter. Still, stuck around a bit in hopes that you weren't just another scammer, but at this point, well, actions speak louder than words. It's been a year now since you allegedly went full time, and we're exactly where were were a year ago (imminent release of ch1). Sure theres supposedly been more on discord, in the locked channels, which I've been unable to get my permissions raised for. I'm sick of the BS.

So what's the status?

They decided not to go through with the changes after a large number of people canceled their pledges.

It'd max at a 40% increase for someone who only did $1 donations. If you're like me and had a mixed amount it'd probably end up around 20%. After I dropped my $1 pledges, it's down to 12-13%.

raska42

I'm mostly stuck on the fact that they're taking $0.35 in 'processing fees' (in reality those are likely $0.003 or $0.004 per transaction, one transaction per donation, a second (this one is, or at least should be bulk) going to the creator). Donators are already footing the cost of currency changing, the only other transaction cost would be data security, and I doubt they're spending several hundred thousand to several million (no idea how many pledges there are) a -month- on that. Really makes you wonder how much of what they've been taking from creators is going straight into their pockets

They could easily have minimized the "double billing" problem (where someone pledging near the end of the month then pays again on the 1st, causing some griping) by (simple) having a grace period of, say, a week, where pledges in the last week mark that patron as having paid for the next month, OR (complicated) pro-rating the next month's payment for the "unused" portion of the previous month. Not worth clarifying here, but grr. My main gripe, however, on top of the huge increase in fees for many small pledges, is that I really don't want to see 20 separate charges on my statement for my 20 pledges. Did they think of Patrons at all? What maroon wouldn't look at their own graphic of how fees would be modified and say "gee, this is going to, like, quadruple fees for some of our Patrons. Nobody wins but PayPal/CC companies."

Regarding Patreon's shift in payment stuff, I believe they mentioned somewhere it's part of them wanting to de-consolidate the payments. The idea is that, if you make a new monthly pledge on the 16th of a month, you'll be billed then and on every following 16th for that pledge. Billing only on the first of the next month either means people wouldn't get access immediately or would be able to get access without having paid first, meaning they could de-pledge and dodge paying after downloading all the content. Billing fully for the partial month leaves many people confused and feeling vaguely shafted, especially for those that pledged towards the end of a month and got charged twice in a few days. So they figured this would cause neither of those problems. This approach doesn't come without downsides though. Until now the fact that Patreon bills once for all your pledges on the first meant that flat surcharges for credit cards, Paypal, currency conversions and whatever else only had to be paid once for the whole lump sum you spend on Patreon every month. Now that they want to bill every tiny payment separately, they're creating more of those fees on both their and our end and the fees the most egregious for small pledges and Patreon cannot pay those themselves if they actually want to make a profit on those small pledges, so they needed to pass them on to someone. Presumably they figured it's easier to sell Patrons on paying 35 cents extra per pledge than selling Creators on the fact that they're getting far less of the money they were supposed to. They do not seem to have figured that the ability to avoid all those extra fees when making loads of tiny pledges was one of the major selling features and reasons to use Patreon in the first place, but who knows. tl, dr: They chose the most hamfisted method possible to solve a problem and that implies they either didn't think very hard about it or outright don't care about (maybe even actively want to get rid of) micro-pledges.

Shouldn't this be written "while you can"? Either way, I can choose to be supporting him here. If anything, taking a pledge means he's far more on the ropes to actually produce content, because there can't be any argument that "at least we haven't paid for this".

thswherizat

If I get the major game update out the door this month, then the pledge will be in anticipation of a release late January/early February for the next major game update. You'd have a major game update to base your decision on whether you'd want to support that pledge or not. Or, you could opt to wait a full cycle and see if I fulfill my end of the bargain. Remember, you can always set a specific pledge to skip, which I'll detail in any pledged update.

YummyTiger Gaming

That depends, if I release 0.12 next week, then it'll be what was planned for November with the addition of night events. If I wait until later this month, it'll become 0.13 in that it'll have enough content to warrant a major update. Yes, my version numbering could use work. One thing, regardless of version numbering, I will only run a pledged update if I release a version I consider to be a major game update. Because, I need to release that before I start finalizing the next major game update (which would see a release in late January/early February.

YummyTiger Gaming

Question: assuming you'll release 0.12, at the end of the month you'll charge people (us) for "the following release". What's the meaning of this? That you plan to release something in January?

MasterQi

I'm not sure I 100% understand what 0.12 will contain. Is it just what you had originally planned to release in 0.11 as of November 8 (cough September), or is it that + what you planned to already include in November (0.12) and December (originally 0.13 iirc)? Basically, is the 0.12 you plan on releasing now the equivalent of the first planned pledged release?

Porksword

Super excited for night events! Can't wait!
