Dev Journal #3

Another week, another development journal… what’s that? The journal is 4 days late? Shhh, if you don’t say anything, nobody will notice! Oops.

Well, sorry for the delay. I was waiting because I knew I was close to having everything I wanted mapped out to the point where I feel comfortable giving a release date. The front page has been updated, and I want to point out that I’ve learnt my lesson a bit. You can expect Aylia’s Story by December 30, 2015 as a slightly belated Christmas present. I say I’ve learned my lesson because I’m giving myself some leeway here. There is a decent chance it’ll get release a bit before that, but I would really like to actually hit one of these release dates... wouldn’t that be nice?

Additionally, I’ve updated the release date for Hunter’s Quest as well. I opened that little project up a bit last week and got my shit in order. It’s actually not too far from completion, so I anticipate that I can definitely get it out within a month of Aylia’s Story release. Who knows, I may sneak in a few days of working on it here and there and surprise you guys. Expect Hunter’s Quest on January 21st, 2016. I reserve the right to release that bad boy early!

Anyways, you can see my thoughts on all this, as well as my stupidity below… hehe.

11-6 – Friday suckers! Woohoo! Aaaannnnndddddd, played the shit out of Divinity after work until 3am. Sorry peeps, that game is just too damn fun.

11-7 – Opened up RPG Maker and attacked chapter 1 with a vengeance. Chapter 1 stage 1 got finalized, meaning all dialogue is done, edited and I’ve added mini events that I like. Still need to finish 1 Aylia CG though. I say stage 1, because chapter 1 will be divided a bit by the main quests. Completing those will progress the game and time. There is no ticking time limit to quests per se, but mini events and things will change dynamically as the chapter move forward, so you might miss out on things if you’re not diligent! Still, the primary side quests (e.g. Rival stuff) will remain available throughout the chapter 1 believe, at least that is how it is shaping up. Those quests kind of have their own progression that can intertwine with the main quest, or can just be separate. Also, I’m proud of the detail I’ve put

into this sucker. Even mini dialogue scenes (barrels, etc.) change as things change. So, the world is quite dynamic and interactive to a level that I think is simply bad ass. Lots of words for a hentai game though… might scare some people away.

11-8 - Sunday, Sunday. Spent today organizing everything for stage 2 and 3 of chapter 1. As I mentioned earlier, I have most events in place with terrible dialogue. Main quests are mostly done and edited, but the side stuff needs love. Still, this is the point I thought I’d hit months ago and planned to finalize the release date. Soooo, hopefully when I post this in a few days, I’ll update with the release date as well! Beyond that, moved a few events to the common event structure in order to make things work smoother, and cleaned up my terrible branching in a few events. Took a look at a choice improvement script and then slapped myself. No more system components! Well, maybe that shop script… NO, *slap*. Nobody gives a shit about the damn shop! 

11-9 – Monday sucks… nothing to see here.

11-10 – Tuesday sucks… nothi—just kidding! Opened up RPG Maker and fiddled with the second portion of the Triste questline, but was not making much progress. Soooo, I switched over to Hunter’s Quest. Damn, been awhile. Took about 45 minutes to get back up to speed and started translating one of the h-scenes. Holy Jesus, the developer likes to use words like, “Nnnnn,” “Uuhhhnnnn,” and “Uuuu.” A lot during these scenes. I guess, now that I think about it, we makes some weird sounds during sex. Finished the scene, and decided to really look through the remaining maps to get this organized as well. Perhaps I can try and lock down a date for this release too…

11-11 – Didn’t get started until late… bah! Moved right into Hunter’s Quest. I want to get this figured out now. Realized things were pretty well along. Most of what is left are dungeons and h-scenes. The dungeon maps make me happy, they don’t have much text. Yep, love those suckers. Still, the list of h-scenes is still a bit daunting. That is a lot of sex moans to translate, hehe. After getting things organized though, decided to skip translating and start planning my add-on events. I already have the skeleton in place for one of them. Time to make that Inn which made absolutely no sense in the original game worthwhile!

11-12 – Aaarrrggghhh! Sorry everyone, I’m an idiot. I know I am an idiot, and I still can’t help myself. Anyways, reading the forums and noticed a comment on Aylia’s Story artwork. Not a bad comment really, just a critique. Soooo, I started looking through the artwork again and got nitpicky… yep, I’m an idiot. And, expression revamp #3 (or maybe 4, fuck if I remember now) has begun. Won’t be so bad this time, but I don’t like Aylia’s expression (her eyes) in a few portraits now. I’ve decided to redo them and to make them more consistent across the board. Yes, I know. I’m also really considering changing her battler expression for the potato sack/peasant dress. I’d keep it angry, but I almost think it looks like she’s trying to poop. God damn me and my nitpicky self… fuck.

11-13 – Needed a break, Divinity was calling my name, I answered…

11-14 – Out of town for a beer festival. Needless to say, when I got home I was in no shape to work diligently. In fact, as I write this now, I’m thinking that my body just doesn’t recover as well as it used to… shit.

11-15 – Weekend are nice. Once I got past hangover mode, got quite a bit done. Worked until about 2am on Aylia’s Story. Finalized 3 night events for stage 2, changed a number of mini-events and added the battle side quest I’ve been wanting to put in place for awhile now. I should post this on Patreon, but I’m a bit tired now. I’ll update things tomorrow.

Well, here I am, updating my Patreon. All in all, a good week. I’m liking the pace I’m going now, even though I thoroughly neglected the battle system last week. While is still pisses me off a bit that I’m revamping old artwork, I’m going to post a teaser tomorrow or Thursday to show you how the new expressions look. It actually is a nice improvement, and I think I’ve settled on how I’m going to draw her eyes going forward. Oddly enough, it seems to always be Aylia who annoys me. I’m content with Kira’s face and love Triste’s expressions… wonder why. Oh, I’ve also added a few more expressions as well, so more detail to go along with the dialogue! I added a Kira face that makes me laugh every time I see it.

Well, worst case scenario, 44 days to go! I may just get stupid drunk when I actually release this bad boy.

I have not tried Sengoku Rance, but I REALLY need to. It gets very positive reviews across the board. Maybe that'll be my reward after I release chapter 1 :-)

Thanks for the information. I actually posted on Steamy's forums before it became Kimochi. I planned on putting the game up there once chapter 1 was done... of course, I planned for that to be done 6 months ago. I do plan on posting again on the new forums, just thought I would wait until I had the major demo done at this point. I'm also considering how I would want to handle Kimochi. Aylia's Story is planned to be a free game ultimately, but Patreons will get access to exclusive demos. I'm not sure how I'd want to handle loading demos on Kimochi after chapter 1. Still, I'll figure something out!

Hey, just hopped aboard, looked at the dev log before this one... if you're looking for a platform to sell on, there's a thing called Kimochi that recently started up trying to be Steam for hentai. The Last Sovereign's on it if you know that one, as well as a couple more nice titles. It's an ambitious little thing that's growing slowly. Not that it's the only place you should throw in on, but if you DID, it'd likely help Kimochi get a bit more known given how much money you've got coming in on the Patreon. You could even throw in right now and offer up the demo for download to get yourself a few more salivating vagrants throwing money at you. Worth looking into?

Good read. Seriously, you are my favorite h-game dev. The amount of work you're putting in before you even hit a paid release is crazy! I hope this game will be a great learning experience, as I definitely plan to stick around for any and all future games. Also, fuck yeah, beer festival! Also, have you played a h-rpg called Despair Labyrinth? It was a fantastic h-rpg that had tons of promise, until the dev was burned by the community and then shut it all down. The dev now runs roleplay on ULMF with the same universe. One thing to look out for is the brilliant use of dialog trees in his game. If you want to try it let me know and I'll send it to you. Plus the master copy if you want to poke around, I'm sure I have it somewhere.

Good news! As much as I'm on your case about release, I think it's great that you're taking enough breaks and treading carefully with the project so that you don't end up burnt out and taking a month long hiatus. I suppose the nice thing about late December is that there's a break in classes! I was worried it would be released close to exams time. PS, have you played Sengoku Rance? I just made the mistake of installing it again and it's caused a string of 2am days for me...

I'm seeing this more as a fun RPG with some sexy elements to it than pure porn material, in all honesty, so the more dialogue and character development the better! 'I’d keep it angry, but I almost think it looks like she’s trying to poop' Angry faces are what we wear when we're pooping now? Huh. Intense concentration, maybe, but angry? Still, glad to see progress continuing at a somewhat effective pace. What did that shop menu you wanted to implement involve, compared to the current one? A way to see stat differences in gear before you buy it is always handy, for example, and I've always enjoyed seeing generic NPC faces on the merchants as you browse.

Funny, cause Aylia, Triste and Kira might have a warm fuzzy feeling in their guts after it is released as well... oooo, low blow! Hehe, as I said above, feeling a bit silly right now, and cracking terrible jokes. The getting drunk part is true though, I'll need a few by then.

I'm a mod junkie, so I won't play it for at least 6-12 months. The things the community does with these games are fantastic. I'm planning an Oblivion playthrough soon with Maskar's Oblivion Overhaul if that tells you anything. Heck, I still use Wrye Bash instead of Mod Organizer cause I got all my shit setup :) Still, I'm very glad with the things I'm hearing. I personally have loved Bethesda games since Daggerfall.

I'm with you. A few of my beer snobbish buddies laughed at my dislike of IPAs... they are no longer my friends. They are nobody's friends anymore... (just kidding, feeling a little silly right now). I don't like IPAs though, big fan of lagers. Found a vanilla porter that I'm literally in love with. In fact, I think my wife might be jealous.

haha get stupid drunk after release? Well I also always get stupid drunk after having finished and delivered a 15ECTS points Project on my university :D I can really relate to that :) Other than that I'm having more of a warm fuzzy feeling in my gut thinking about the game released, than I am hyped ;)
