2024-01-23 19:00:12 +0000 UTCYou won't be able to use a switch to expand the number of drives you would attach to a host, but you would extend the loop via the in/out ports. I would recommend checking out the IBM RedBook titled "Introduction to Storage Area Networks" and they talk about FC topology starting on page 90 (it's freely available as a PDF or even as an ePub file).

2024-01-22 20:16:50 +0000 UTCThe idea of dual-attached SAS drives comes from the dual-loop FC drives as a form of redundancy. It allows you to have redundant paths from a host to the drives (think of two different FC HBAs, in case one goes kaput or the fiber connection drops out), or you have a pair of hosts where you can split the drives across hosts or one host owns all the drives while you have passive that can take over.

2024-01-22 20:06:41 +0000 UTCFC drives use the small SCA connectors since they only need to provide power and a handful of pins required for dual FC loops. The drives and the drawers will connect to the server as arbitrated loops. It's been a while since I've worked with FC, so I don't remember the x_Port terminology used. 😅
