Early Access: Episode 46 - Brewster's Millions (1985)

Patrick Willems has a great overview of it on YouTube. It’s completely a vibes movie, Willems has a quote from from Hill where he explains the plot as basically the themes from 50s teen songs strung together. That kind of mashup really worked better 30 years later. A

If anyone is into screenplays, Walter Hill’s draft of Alien is pretty fantastic. It’s extremely minimal, like if Cormac McCarthy wrote a script in haiku.

I got to admit (and this might be a hot take), but I wasn’t a fan of 48 Hours. I might’ve gotten a bit too hyped to see this when I listened to the Harlem Nights episode. Eddie was hilarious without a doubt, but I really didn’t like Nolte frankly. I didn’t need to necessarily “like” his character, but he was far too unpleasant in a way that felt too try-hard and not worth watching. You have a good point of not needing the two leads to become best of friends by the end, but I do need to feel that the conclusion makes sense, and I didn’t buy that Murphy and Nolte would have gotten any respect for one another.

Thanks for the shoutout! Honored to have made it into an episode! Great deep-dive into Hill’s career & Brewster’s Millions! This ep definitely inspired me to seek out The Long Riders. Looking forward to the Hill follow-up!

The whole Robert Evans/Ali McGraw/Getaway story is a side plot in the Paramount+ limited series, The Offer. It's actually all about Albert Ruddy ( Miles Teller) producing The Godfather. Very watchable and Matthew Goode basically steals the show as Evans.

Streets of Fire is more a vibe movie than a plot movie. I love it’s vibe a music myself. I think they originally wanted Patrick Swayze in the Michael Pare part and I do wish he was the star instead if that’s true. I get the feeling that the world of Streets of Fire is set after a massive war and there isn’t a big population anymore so the cities are where people are now and they’re pretty lawless. Tom Cody comes back from whatever war that happened.

There is a good 70s LA Buddy cop movie called Busting starring Eliot Gould and Robert Blake you guys should check out. And Joe, the movie I think you were thinking of where it was set to Star Steve McQueen but McQueen insisted Ali McGraw be involved was Friedkin’s Sorcerer.

Hurry back! You were shouted out during this ep.

I’m still catching up on the final season!

Joe, I know you like What We Do In The Shadows. Did you see The Warriors after the final season where they homaged it in one of the episodes?

I keep getting sidetracked trying to check these movies out. I'll be back to comment in a few weeks, and you all better respond goddamnit.

Loved listening to this. Allan Graf is always great to see pop up. His specialty as a stuntman must be bus stunts because he was always showing up as the bus driver in various action movies.
