Early Access: Movie Catch-up - Favorites of 2024

Hey everyone! Here's the latest movie catch-up. Though not planned, this ended up being a discussion on some of our favorite pieces of media of the year, due to the delays in recording and us doing the Alec Baldwin Sidetracks ep in favor of a movie catch-up last month. There are also a few other random movies that got lumped in here that don't fall into that category. (Sorry to disappoint, but Wicked was NOT a favorite of the year). As always, this is a spoiler heavy episode so I've included timecodes below for stuff you want to avoid spoilers for:

00:00:00 - Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

00:10:40 - The Apprentice

00:23:50 - The Penguin (2024) & Batman Forever Revisited

00:40:33 - Anora

00:57:25 - Wicked

01:07:03 - Nosferatu & The Lighthouse

01:16:30 - Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl

01:18:47 - The Substance

Also, I've been experimenting with taking some of our discussions from the show and synching them up with clips of the movies we're talking about to act as trailers for our content. They'll basically feel like unscripted Hats Off videos, if you're familiar with my content on that channel. After listening to this episode, I feel the Batman Forever discussion will make a great first video for this series and I plan to start work on it soon so stay tuned for that!

One aspect that used to be played up in Two-Face was some degree of vanity and having half his face scarred as a factor in his losing it. When I heard Jones was cast my take was " What are they gonna do -- make half his face look GOOD ?" A better pick might have been Michael Douglas... he worked with Schumacher in "Falling Down"

Scott Ruisch

Joe, I'd love you to watch "Breakup Season" and/or "A New York Story" :)

JP

A couple of them are listed as 2023 movies on letterboxd but they probably played a film festival or two in late 2023 before being released proper in 2024.

JP

Some of my faves of 2024 in no particular order (still have a lot I have to see): Good one, Didi, Christmas Eve In Miller's point, greedy people, drugstore june, Cora bora, stress positions, The girl in the pool, A New York story, breakup season and F Marry Kill.

JP

I'm autistic and I'm the type of autistic person who has total recall and near perfect memory so unless it's a movie I really, really love; I rarely watch movies more than once. That being said, when I have COVID, the flu or just a very bad cold, I watch a favorite of mine so I don't have to do too much heavy lifting, comfort watch but otherwise I tend not to but that's a me thing. Your mileage may vary.

JP

Anora is nothing special, I truly don't understand why it's bowling everyone over. Not bad, certainly well made, but hardly the movie of the year. Oh, and you guys are wrong, Frosty the Snowman is wonderful.

Troy Thomas

We plan to do an episode on that one!

Almost Cult Classics

Wait until you both see the Musical of the year Emília Perez , is the frontrunner for Oscars and most of México Already hates the film. I love Anora & the substance

Salvador Pereira

I don’t know if you guys have ever discussed it before but I highly recommend Miami Blues! Grade-A Alec Baldwin sleaze

Tyler Mammen

“Anora” just went up for sale on Criterion’s website: https://www.criterion.com/films/34891-anora

5chan.org

Sean Baker was a guest on one of the last jim norton shows talking about anora. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0Wfh5BK27k&ab_channel=JimandSamShow

Carlisle

Have ya'll seen this other movie the director of the apprentice did? It's a weird one. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5501104/

Carlisle

Agree with Ryan's characterisation of Eggers as being a bit on the nose and not really leaving things open to interpretation. I liked Nosferatu but I really don't think it stuck the landing all that well

Tom Goodwin

Add it to the eternal list haha

Nathan Kearney

No, one of these days I’ll watch though.

Ryan Lancello

Ryan, have you seen the show Justified? I feel like you might dig it, liking Deadwood.

Nathan Kearney

Haven’t seen much from last year. Mostly due to time and money (I think I saw 4 or 5 total). Though I did get to check out The Brutalist this past weekend at a 70mm screening. Not sure if it’d be either of yours cup of tea, but the audience was loving it as was I. Mix of young college-age teens and much older folks there. And for a 3 1/2 hour period piece that’s pretty impressive. It does have an intermission as well, which was very appreciated. I’d try and hype it up, but I don’t want to push expectations too high for something like this.

The Film Smith

Sounds interesting

Almost Cult Classics

Yeah all those actors could’ve been great if they treated those villains with respect (Jim Carrey could’ve a balance of creepy and goofy which comedy actors can pull off like robin williams in one hour photo, Tommy Lee Jones could’ve been a great two face if he played it straight as this homicidal killer who is obsessed with duality “every yin has a Yang every positive has a negative”, Arnold would’ve been a great bane, watching Batman forever I think Nicole Kidman would’ve been a better poison ivy (she’s already got red hair, she’s much prettier than Uma thurman, she’s very tall and could’ve played the seductive role imo) like that your profile is Cesar Romero lol loved him on the old Batman show but my heart will always be with Jack Nicholson as the best joker and mark Hamill (although I don’t like him as a person told his sons gf to get an abortion, charging $400 and up for an autograph, and way way way too political)

Michael Sgambati

Jim Carrey probably tried too

JokersJuicyAss

Did you ever see "The Birthday Cake (2021)"? Val Kilmer is in it but he doesn't speak anymore so he uses a voicebox. I didn't love the movie as it's kind of all over the place but I'd be curious hear what you guys think. It does have a good cast.

JP

On Ryan's point about Intimacy coordinators, they're not a new thing in the industry. The likes of Bound have used them for consultation or making sure everyone knows what they're doing on set. It's only after the whole #MeToo movement that we've been hearing about them, as they've been in demand since 2017. That said, this job isn't a universally agreed upon thing in the industry, as Michael Caine, Toni Collette, Michael Douglas, Gaspar Noé, Sean Bean, and Mia Hansen-Løve have voiced their displeasure. In Baker's case, he asked Mikey if she wanted one on set. She said no since she trusted Baker and it paid off (Seeing as how the film has a clear idea of communicating the types of sex in the narrative).

The One and Rory

Really loved BATMAN FOREVER when seeing it in the theater. Then got it as a gift on VHS later that year and realized it was dung. Truly hardened me.

cdpren

So Stuntman Ignition for when you guys do the 2005 Dukes of Hazzard movie because there's a parody of it in that game https://youtu.be/Bb2cXMuAXes

JokersJuicyAss

Glad you guys also liked The Substance and Anora! Those were my favorites of 2024 for sure

Tyler Mammen

Do whatever you want, man it's why I like you. I'm just busting chops.

Lux Anatis

I'll only ever review them if they relate to movies, which is rare

Almost Cult Classics

I must have legitimately blacked out during this scene. Either that or I was laughing maniacally like Sam Neill at the end of In the Mouth of Madness.

Almost Cult Classics

I love the grinch cartoon, I try to watch it every year with my grandpa during Christmas time.

Mary and Steve

In terms of rewatching movies, I’m not big on it unless it’s been a while since I’ve seen it or I’m showing it to a friend or relative who’s never seen it.

Luke Gordnier

Yep at this point I’ll stick with the animated series and Mask Of The Phantasm coz those at least respected the characters and treated them how they are supposed to be portrayed (not like Matt reeves “let’s just remake Se7en and zodiac with Batman characters oh and let’s remake sopranos with The Penguin” or Todd Phillips “let’s just remake Martin Scorsese films with Joker oh excuse me Arthur Fleck who takes the name JOKER not The Joker who fights Batman” get the hell outta here with that crap

Michael Sgambati

Such a baffling film performance and I'm stunned no one had the good sense or conviction to tell him that it wasn't working

Almost Cult Classics

Refresh my memory on the laundry scene?

Almost Cult Classics

Awesome!

Almost Cult Classics

Yeah, it’s something I’m going to watch sooner rather than later, it should be something I really like! And I want to enjoy it but I’m not too hype on the music, either.

Mary and Steve

As both the head jeerleader of the mentioning of video games on this podcast and a "gamer" (a term I hate) since the Atari 2600 era, I have a whole hell of a lot to say about why I feel that way if anyone is interested in hearing it.

Lux Anatis

Fandom does indeed ruin everything, but don't let it color your opinion of art. The audience decides the meaning of any piece of media and what I personally got out of Wicked is probably the exact opposite of anything anyone who worked on it intended. Give it a chance.

Lux Anatis

That video game, Concord is wild. What a mess-up! Ok but the laundry scene in Batman Forever - that’s cool, right?? 🙃 I haven’t seen Wicked yet because I’m a Mary Mary Quite Contrary hater. So many people treat it like it ‘explains’ everything and no… it’s fan-fiction. I’m sitting here going “🤓☝️Um actually…!” It’s the Hook of Peter Pan or something, plenty of call-backs and little references but not ‘the true story.’ Drives me mad!!

Mary and Steve

Love that you revisited Batman Forever I think tommy lee jones was very jealous because in 1994 tommy lee jones did Cobb about ty cobb and the same week dumb and dumber came out and dumb and dumber was the bigger hit at the box office and tommy lee jones felt like I put alot into that performance and jim carrey does this goofy crap screw it im not gonna get upstaged by him again in the same movie having said that if tommy lee jones played it straight he would be a great two face but he had to match or try to match jim carrey and it failed oh boy

Michael Sgambati

Excited to listen! Also thank you for the tip on the Kino Lorber Miracle Mile Blu-ray! Just ordered mine. (I was the one who recommended it) 🥲
