Patreon Exclusive: More Kurt Russell Movies

Hey all! Here's your exclusive episode on three MORE Kurt Russell movies. This time we're talking about Tango & Cash (1989), 3000 Miles to Graceland (2001), and Bone Tomahawk (2015). Also, apologies for the low volume on the last episode. I had the wrong setting checked on the export which bumped the sound down considerably. Should be resolved with this episode but let me know if there are any issues. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

I'm also debuting the new and improved podcast logo and branding with this episode. I wanted something that kept the style of the old logo but made the title of the show pop more visually. I also put our names on the same level so Ryan would stop hounding me about equal billing. Such a prima donna. Anyway, let us know what you think!

Brawl in cell block 99 is zahlers best! Awesome homage to grindhouse movies!

Fernandez

Oh my bad.

Chris van Dijk

Ryan likes The Counselor, Joey hasn’t seen it.

Ryan Lancello

Also Zahler makes music too. Weird psychedelic rock music. Not my jam but you gotta give it to him. A true renaissance man.

Chris van Dijk

I've read several of Zahler's book and you're right, it can be bitch to find good copies. Mean Business on North Ganson Street is an interesting novel, despite one particular sequence of animal cruelty that really bothered me. Overall, his prose can both be fantastic, if a little too fanciful. His prose fits the western genre specifically, since the dialog can then be less natural, but in a modern setting, as you can see in Brawl and Dragged, can be off-putting for some, though I never minded it personally. It's similar to the dialog in The Counselor- which Joey likes and I think is Ridley Scott's best film in years- where characters can suddenly turn extremely poetic and erudite. But again, I like it.

Chris van Dijk

Re: Zahler not getting much work...I don't think the nature of the projects announced vs projects made/Covid can be discounted. But he also got tagged as a "fascist filmmaker" post-Dragged Across Concrete and that's kind of stuck. The association with Cinestate wouldn't have helped. I don't know enough about his personal politics to say whether that's accurate. He strikes me as an edgelord -- but conversely depiction of behaviour is not the same as approval, not all characters can be assumed to be the director's mouthpiece etc. But either way -- can't imagine that's helped his job prospects with the majors.

Tom Goodwin

Brigands of Rattleborge was that famous unproduced script of his. I think it was the first thing I read from him. I’d say it’s pretty equal to Tomahawk in the brutality department as well (they even have a scene almost on par with the deputy’s death). They were going to film it with McConaughey and the director of Oldboy last I heard.

The Film Smith

I have not. Recommend?

Speaking of Thomas Haden Church: Have you guys seen "Accidental Texan"?

JP

Ryan should watch Zemeckis' "Here" and leave Joe out of it lol Ryan loves torturing himself lol he will hate it, Joe. We both know that.

JP

I put on an old DVD recently (don't remember what the movie was.... It doesn't matter!) and was ASSAULTED by that godawful PSA. I feel violated by that stupid thing now lol

JP

Oh hell, he's like a demon goblin man! I would totally have informed on my friend's dad for pirating Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing if I saw a crazy man with a brand ready to explode my vhs tapes.

Thomas Bishop

Have you ever seen the UK one with the demon blacksmith? https://youtu.be/GIEh3n2grNM?si=HW3tpulg52KYGPDy

Got my car downloaded by Jackass Number Two

JokersJuicyAss

Sending over new copies of both A Congregation of Jackals and Wraiths of the Broken Land by S. Craig Zahler directly to the PO Box from some Spanish-language book seller. Let me know if there is anything weird, or if they are randomly in Spanish even though they said "en inglais."

Thomas Bishop

Nothing was worse than queuing up a new DVD and getting immediately hit with that awful spot

Almost Cult Classics

Haven't seen it in years but enjoyed! I just wish he paced his movies better

Almost Cult Classics

He's not trying to be though, I think that's the difference. He's good when he's playing it straight against comedy characters

Almost Cult Classics

I don't know why but I was crying at the quip about the director working on the "You wouldn't steal a car..." psa.

Thomas Bishop

Joe, thoughts on Mangold’s “3:10 to Yuma”?

Schmitbag

God damn it.

Almost Cult Classics

If we ever get a Blood Meridian movie, there's only one director up to the task: James Mangold

Nathan Kearney

Also in Tulsa King Stallion is pretty funny

JokersJuicyAss

Thinking about changing it so it says "with Joe Ramoni and friend"

Almost Cult Classics

Haha

Almost Cult Classics

Joe slipped into wc fields during his frustration when talking about 3,000 miles to Graceland

Luke Gordnier

Joe just had to get that dig in at the end, asshole move quite frankly.

Ryan Lancello

Thanks Luke! Just an amalgamation of random titles from a source image that I found, nothing in particular

Almost Cult Classics

Seriously? This is an embarrassment of riches

Jason Patterson

Love the new logo Joe! Which movies make up the background?
