I’m pretty sure Kurosawa tried to pull the same dumb argument as Leone too. “Oh, Red Harvest? Hmm, I maybe read it, I think? Few pages maybe? Not quite sure oh well (shrug).” Lol like an oral tradition of passing down a story, artistic thievery has its merits.

To go with the Yojimbo and A Fist Full of Dollars thing: Yes, Leone ripped off Kurosawa but Kurosawa ripped off Dashiel Hammett and gave him no credit. Yojimbo is just the novel Red Harvest. It was based largely on real tactics the Pinkerton Agency would do when they were called into a town to restore order, Hammett was a Pinkerton in his youth. A loose adaptation of the novel was the Bruce Willis starring and Walter Hill directed movie Last Man Standing from 1996. It is called another remake of Yojimbo but I think it’s more an adaptation of Red Harvest.
