Deadpool 2 (2018) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Please note: I literally pressed pause on the credits in between the post-credits scene moments, but thankfully caught myself. So there's a second countdown for syncing that occurs if you need it, but I would recommend just pressing pause at the 1:52:01 mark.

After watching this, I think that I may have actually NOT seen this movie before. 😅 I truly don't know. Looking forward to your comments!

Deadpool 2 (2018) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Comments

My understanding is that watching them isn't necessary to understand the story of DP&W, it's just to have fun with the various cameos that happen (as I do know there are some and I've already been spoiled on one of them). Like when Evan Peters showed up in WandaVision, I clearly didn't get it at the time, but it didn't affect my enjoyment or understanding of the WandaVision story.

So I know a few people who didn’t watch the other films you mentioned prior to Deadpool & Wolverine and they were completely lost. I definitely think you SHOULD watch them but no need to do a reaction to them…watch them on your own time. Just my opinion.

boss435

Yeah, I'm very excited to get to DP&W so I can have an official trilogy ranking in place.

kaiielle

The Thanos line was excellent and unexpected. 😂

I grew up reading X-men in the late 80s early 90s so I have a soft spot for all these characters, even with the changes. For sure the weakest of the trilogy but still a great movie imho

RichieRich

I will note that Ryan Reynolds hadn't heard of the term "Fridging" when they made this and actually regretted it later (also making jokes about it in the "Deadpool and Korg react to FreeGuy" trailer)

I know you already saw this before, but I think know you can understand the first line in this movie which is “fuck Wolverine.” Did you notice the heap amount of MCU references in this one? The film rights for X-Men still belonged to 20th Century Fox at the time, but that didn't stop them from mentioning the MCU among other pop culture here and there. Furthermore, this movie dropped only a few weeks after Infinity War. Of all the people they could've casted for the role of Cable, they went with Josh Brolin and he was already portraying Thanos. I wonder how he was able to tackle both characters back then. In the trailer, Deadpool joked "pump the hate brakes, Thanos." Then here he goes "zip it, Thanos” which is my favorite part of the entire film. By the way, even though we didn't get Stan Lee to cameo in this movie and Logan 2017, he appeared in a teaser for Deadpool 2 that played right before Logan during its' theatrical run. You still have a ways to go before watching Deadpool & Wolverine, but as far as X-Men films go you met the requirement. For now, I look forward to Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3!

Yep, definitely forgot! Thanks for rewatching with me!

kaiielle

Yeah, that scene was definitely a low point of the film. The extended dying scene felt on-brand for Deadpool, but I can definitely see how it would get old on repeat viewings. Yeah, I guess I completely forgot about him in that movie LOL.

It’s very telling to me that you don’t recall the first Juggernaut in The Last Stand. He’s the guy that could smash through walls with his helmet. Which is all he basically did. This version was accurate to the comics. His size, design, and familial connection. He’s Xavier’s brother. Cable happens to be Nathan Summers, future son of Scott and Jean in the comics. I feel like giving Cable that back story is more interesting than Juggernaut’s throw away comment about his brother in a wheelchair, but whatever. I saw this in theaters when it first came out and I remember leaving feeling dissatisfied. I haven’t watched it since. I still find certain scenes funny, but for some reason this movie doesn’t land for me. I don’t imagine I’ll revisit it again. I do know I don’t appreciate how Vanessa was handled. IF anything it seems like they just didn’t know what to do with her. I didn’t need her “fridges”. If you’re unfamiliar with the literary trope of “fridging a character” I suggest Googling it. A term derived from a comic book story, interestingly enough. I will add I was planning to watch your Quantumania reaction this evening when Deadpool 2 magically appeared. And just like that I understood my opinion of Quantumania, another movie I’ve only watched the one time…maybe tomorrow for that one.

Bryan Dempsey

Appreciate your insight on that, thank you!

Oh, and personally speaking, I don't mind a bit of a wait for Deadpool & Wolverine if you wanna catch up to the Fox back catalogue. Blade is pretty much a must-see as it indirectly led to the MCU (it was the first successful theatrical Marvel superhero movie). I'll caution (again) that with Daredevil, there are character introduction spoilers for Daredevil season 3, but the series (unsurprisingly) does it much better.

Other random stuff now that I think about it... Deadpool's rant about Domino's powers and who came up with that stupid idea... Deadpool and Domino (and Cable) were (co-)created by Rob Liefeld...who also can't draw feet... This is the second version of Juggernaut to appear in the X-franchise. The character was also in X-Men 3. This version, however, like Colossus, is far closer to the comic book version than the mainline X-Men movies (with the exception that Juggernaut reformed and has been a good guy in the comics for the last 15-20 years or so). And played here by... Ryan Reynolds. Annnd finally, while there's no Deadpool and Cable TV series (...yet...?), there was a 50 issue 'Cable & Deadpool' comic run in the 00s if you really wanna scratch that itch. Sorry, I'll stop now.

For me I think I prefer most of the first movie more, but I like the added characters from Deadpool 2 more. A few scenes just are too much like the whole baby privates scene should been less. Also I understand the whole extended dying scene, it reminds me of bugs bunny but everytime i see it I just wanna fast forward through it, it gets old fast. As far as Juggernaut he first showed up in X-men 3 and ofcorse here, and neither movie has done him justice. I would love to see MCU or DCU to start doing villian origin movies that would draw me back in cause some villians have amazing stories behind them.

Chris Elkins

They called her Yukio, but the powers/look were borrowed from another X-Men character that goes by the name Surge in the comics. Not sure why they recycled the name for a completely different character beyond name recognition? Was an odd choice. Also, FWIW, if you want a bit more on Cable's background, and are looking for a new show for Patreon at any point, X-Men '97 may be a good choice...

Hey no judgment here, Sailor! I'm glad you enjoy it!

Weirdly, it may be my favorite of the trilogy. Then again, I'm a fairly ridiculous person who adores the ridiculous. " Pbbbst. Sailors, amirite? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

William

I just looked it up and WTF I never realized that was Matt Damon! Wow! And Alan Tudyk lol dude literally is the comedy version of Gary Oldman

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

The only jokes that I didn't care for, on reflection, was every time they pointed out bad writing. It happened like three times, like PLEASE shaddap and just be confident in your script at least. The Brad Pitt appearance was a WTF moment, but finding out that Matt Damon spent 4 hours in prosthetics to make a cameo appearance? LMAO that dude is truly in everything at this point. (I read a Letterboxd review that mentioned it, so it's not in this watchalong, but will be in the edited version.)

kaiielle

The movie's a lot of fun, and I love Cable and Domino, but it's by far my least favorite of the Deadpool Trilogy. I think it was the humor this time around? Just seemed like it was a little much in places like the writers were shoving my head in a pool of jokes saying "Drink dammit!" That being said, The X-Force gag was probably the funniest thing in the whole movie 😆 and briefly seeing Brad Pitt as Vanisher? Brilliant.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

Meanwhile I'm over here feeling guilty because the reaction was shared LATE (relative to what I had communicated in the schedule LOL). Anyway, glad you're excited, please enjoy!

kaiielle

We're being spoiled. On a Monday. How very fucking cool.

Steve Mercier

Oh cool! A nice surprise for a Monday! 👏🏼
