Chapter 295

Thea Glasshammer saluted to the Executive Directors of Star Crossing.

“Report,” Andre said, the tall, African-American man who had seized the golden coin to found the town and established himself as chairman of the village.

“The Wild Rider… actually thinks the Skeleton Knight is losing the war against the villages to the South, based on his movements.” Thea said with a frown.

“This is a bad thing?” Denise, a thin Asian woman, interjected.

“From what the Wild Rider says… yes.” Thea confirmed. “Although they can decimate his forces, it would be a miracle if they managed to kill him. His stats are just too much higher than even their best. Meanwhile, the more pressure he’s under-”

“The faster he grows. That’s how the Champions work,” Cale drawled, the final member of the Executive Board, a slightly overweight man who had been a baker before the change.

“Exactly,” Thea confirmed.

“And the Wild Rider remains…. Unwilling to act?” Andre asked, frowning.

“Yes. According to…. Them, the way this should have played out was the Skeleton Knight expanding, hunting for the Wild Rider. Meanwhile, the Wild Rider would be running and hiding, waiting for his Ivory Stag to grow up from an infant. It would be a race; would the Skeleton Knight catch the Wild Rider in his net, or would the stag grow powerful enough to turn the tide.” Thea said. “The pressure from the chase would be important, because it would hasten the growth. As it is…”

“So because it is safe, the growth is slow?” Cale said, shaking his head. “Which is terrible news for us.”

“Worse news for the Southern Villages.” Denise commented. She turned to Andre. “Has the Southern Boogeyman showed up? Or are they still fighting on their own?”

Andre was still frowning when he spoke. “It is possible, but… based on what our scouts have said, the Ghosthound is still missing. Which is a blessing and a curse, if what is stated about his powers are to be believed. Either way, his actions jump started those Villages to the point they don’t need him to go toe to toe with the skeleton army.”

Thea kept her mouth shut for this part of the conversation, even though she had so many questions to ask. She had, of course, heard of the Ghosthound, a man who had started the first village in their Zone, shaped and protected the second, planted a tree and started a cult, and then abruptly disappeared, right when the Tier III Raid Boss arrived.

But everyone agreed: he was the most powerful individual they had ever seen. And the rumor was that he didn’t even have a Class.

Which was… a crazy prospect. Thea knew that logically, most classes didn’t add THAT much extra stats per level, but the bonuses to Health, Mana, and Stamina alone were enough to make the difference in a fight, in most cases. How could a classless person hope to match that with just what he received for finish paths…?

“So people, focus,” Andre said, his hands spreading out on the wood of the table. “What do we do? What does the Wild Rider want?”

“They definitely want to do something,” Thea supplied, shrugging. “The problem will only be exacerbated if we allow the conflict with the Southern Villages to buoy the Skeleton Knight’s strength, without getting the Wild Rider involved. But all of the options are bad ones…”

“If it’s a matter of-” Cale began, leading forward, but Andre gave him a look. They all three fell silent, and Thea felt inwardly furiously. The leaders of Star Crossing were hiding things from here, simply because she had pledged to the Wild Rider. Although most of the people had pledged, there was something about the situation holding the executive board back.

They were unwilling to fulling trust the Champion that had descended to their world, even though the alternative was so abhorrent. Perhaps it was only because the Skeleton Knight’s reign was such a far cry from the freedom these people desired that the executive board kept her around in such a high position at all.

Either way, it rankled. Through her mental connection to Chrysanthemum, Thea felt her companion’s emotion turn angry, as her own emotions bled over. Quickly, she schooled herself as best she could, keeping her face impassive.

“There is another reason we called you here,” Denise said, turning to Thea. “Those two you brought in? One of them was given a class. We’d like it if you could assist in his early leveling. He also expressed interest in the Wild Rider, so….”

“Simon was it?” Thea said, remembering the two figures. Remembering the visceral feeling of Chrysanthemum’s joy as she had played with the other man, David.

Denise paused. “...yes, I believe so. A lovely name. Anyway, help them, but watch them two. They caused some trouble when they went for a class. The usual arrogant sort of violence. Something to watch out for.”

Thea had a very hard time believing that, but she nodded anyway.

A gong began to sound. Cale swore. Denise’s eyes narrowed.

“Well… it seems we have company,” Andre said mildly as he stood.

****

Randidly grunted with exertion, his will straining. The worst part of this whole recovery was how fucking squirrelly the bits of his broken skill were, as they were embedded in the wrong place. They seemed to wriggle, aiming to get around his pressing will.

It had swiftly become apparent that while his skill being smashed to pieces was the main injury, his Battle Intent, and therefore his application of will, was also heavily injured. Luckily, the amorphous quality he had chosen for it meant that his will was well on its way of reforming.

Randidly supposed he shouldn't’ be surprised. He had let his Battle Intent take a beating against Drak, then overexerted himself using his new skill too many times, and then he had used it against a Master class opponent, who had absolutely steamrolled him. Surprising, honestly, that the injuries weren’t any worse.

But that was slowly recovering, so he was becoming increasingly even handed with his surgery. With a grunt, Randidly leaned back, relaxing somewhat, letting the dull ache of pain fade away. Several bits of broken skill floated in the space where the skill was once housed, liberated.

Randidly had been able to completely clear the skills Bacterial Regeneration, Running, and Hammer of the Dawn. A strangely eclectic list, but they were the most commonly used skills of the ones that had a light serving of the bits of skill.

What Randidly really needed to clear out was Physical Fitness and Fighting Proficiency, the two passive skills that were basically causing him constant low grade agony. Fighting Proficiency wasn’t so bad, but Physical Fitness had 9 bits embedded in it, one of the worst ones. And these were all deep, worming their way into the crucial bits of the skill.

While Randidly could remove them, moving them incorrectly, or too quickly, or too ANYTHING meant that there was a strange… irritation to his pain. This irritation led to persistent, debilitating headaches that could only be sated through the use of the Mending Fluid that Simon provided.

Which meant that the limiting factor in Randidly’s recovery speed was really Simon, not that he would ever tell the kid that. He had enough stress on his plate. Currently, he was over in the corner, curled up, practicing his Astral Projection Skill.

Randidly’s inherent suspicion of Village Spirits had driven him to intercede, but he wondered whether that was for the best. He truly believed that remaining a Dreamer was the… honest to self path for Simon. But perhaps it was far, far, more difficult to maintain that innocence in the world after the System.

Maybe just… after coming back from Shal’s world, seeing Simon had triggered a nostalgia in Randidly, foolish as it was.

Randidly scratched his hands, strangely irritated. Well, the reason wasn’t strange. He hated this weakness, this waiting. At no point in his life had he ever been disabled like this. And honestly, this wasn’t a very complete disability. He was just… less over powered.

Or more accurately, less able to refine himself, and pursue his goals. Randidly had a lot of things he wanted to accomplish, finding his friends, addressing the Creature’s use of Lyra’s identity, but right now, he wasn’t sure how he would fare in either endeavor. He simply didn’t know enough about the zone. Where could they be?

And there was something about the Champions that raised Randidly’s hackles. More hooks that the System could put into you. But he was curious too. His Aether detection wasn’t sophisticated, but there didn’t seem to be anything like an Aether tether other than the Class one on Thea Glasshammer. In fact, the only other connection was between her and the bear.

Randidly abruptly straightened, his eyes flashing. Grimacing, he drank some of the refined fluid. Simon sat bolt upright.

“Trouble-” The boy began, before collapsing into a fit of wheezing. A gong began to sound, likely a call to arms. Randidly just yawned, cracking his neck.

Some light exercise would be nice.

Huge debate going on here..testament to big P's writing skill xD I also didn't like how the previous ask ended but it's not like it's over and won't be revisited again. And not everyone died, only ones I cared about were divvet and Roger. Can't really think of anyone else having died. Also the widely open ended ending to cohort 5 arc just gives P a lot of wiggle room for writing in the future...wouldnt be that interesting later if we got all the answers we're asking for right now

Hear !Hear!

Can we all just please take into account the fact that Randidly not being able to access all his skills right now gives him an INCENTIVE TO actually GET MORE SKILLS CUZ HE IS CLASSLESS. NEW SKILLS are EASY TO LEVEL and is/was his PRIMARY WAY TO GET STRONGER. STOP COMPLAINING and be please BE GRATEFUL that BIG P is SHARING and giving us our DAILY DOSE. THANK YOU!

Mackoy

The author can't please everyone you know? If he tries to please you, people like me are going to complain because you want the Ghosthound to curbstomp everyone with no problem a bit like how a lot of Xianxias work, go off, come back, curb stomp everyone without a sweat. I prefer to look at his problem as a great opportunity because the Ghosthound is forced to learn a bunch of other skills WHICH by the way, is is PRIMARY way of GETTING STRONGER. Further down the story you're gonna complain, why didn't he pick up more skills while he can? See where I'm going? You are blinded by pride, you want Ghosthound to be able to flex and be an attention whore which is dumb. Maybe you should try to think first why the author is doing something cause he seemed to have delivered time and time again.

Mackoy

I think to deal with your frustration, you just need to remember the fact that stress can make or break someone; in the Ghosthound's case, with the help of his monstrous willpower, he refuses to break. Hard situations and failures are needed (as a catalyst) to temper one's body and soul because of the fact that the body is made out of : [(physical(bio/mech)+mental(neu/elec)+emotional(ther/chem)] while the spirit/soul? : (essence+will+_____).

Mackoy

Radar... So are you sad that roger died then? The 5th cohort ppl aren't done, the point of giving tai a connection was so he can take the north and randidly will be able to come back for the next tournament in a year and a half. There's stuff that needs done on earth right now. Chill~ I'm still hoping helen can be one of thr champions in a zone.

MagicWafflez

Helen is best girl. Also sidney is being held hostage by *cough* skeletons *cough* so clearly ghosthound is going to pwn skeleton champion. Also, simon wants to get the tamer skill, and donnyton is against skeletons. One of the 2 champions have to win, so... Wild hunter is a thing. This arc will likely be the sidney ace arc, which I'm happy about. Maybe deal with lyra's thing too. Nothing was abandoned and everything is set up. Wait until a year and a half from now when he needs to do the main tournament. Then we can find out how everyone faired

MagicWafflez

Which woman?

Radar

He kinda left earth with the exact same abruptness as he left Cohort 5. That to me speaks of plot twist and a need to return in order to finish things. Also he has gotta interact with Cohort 5 again since his "woman" is there.

Horatio Hornet

The legend is already growing and another appearance somewhere else with him will add to it! The reveal of David as the Ghosthound will be epic

Tibstrike

Yep! And I think him being classless will be as equally important to the world as the Spearman was to Shal's. No classes and perhaps his clockwork world will remake the current earth into a new one with new species!

Tibstrike

The ghost hound will be to earth what the spearman was to shalls world

I disagree, the MAIN plot and in fact the TITLE of the story is how Randidly Ghosthound became a legend. Becoming legendary means more than just being strong. The fact that he molded the cities of Donnyton and Franksburg into powerhouses that could defeat the unbeatable champions from the system is legendary. A OP MC that just defeats all his challengers without adversity is a boring story. A man who reforges humanity into a greater civilization in the wake of a litrpg apocalypse is an epic tale. If we fail to see the civilization that he creates then you lose a good deal of the epicness of the tale.

Alan McBrayer

My point is that while there are sub-plots (tournament, judgements, escaping the dungeon, building Donnyton, etc) the MAIN plot of this story is Randidly getting stronger. It's literally what this story is about. Everything else revolves around Randidly training and getting strong enough to protect Earth. So when you read 200+ chapters about him training, I don't feel it advances the plot or makes it any more interesting to suddenly weaken him. Even if he is still stronger than most everyone else on Earth, as a reader we know how crippled he is, and it's frustrating to read. Also, I understand it has only been a few chapters, but this is not a finished book that we can power-read through certain parts. We're waiting 24 hours for every chapter (give or take), so even short segments feel a hell of a lot longer. I guess when it comes down to it one thing I was really looking forward to is Randidly coming backing to Earth like a fucking powerhouse, not wasting over a month fixing his skills and not talking.

Nick Nicholson

MORE MORE MORE!!!!! NEED MORE!

Horatio Hornet

I dig you like it....I personally don't like what happened to end Shal's world. P had created so much depth, much better than at any other point in this work: characters with comic relief, multiple intertwining arcs, yada, yada, yada, nuclear bomb detonation, abracadabra, back on Earth. Meanwhile, as much as you all hate OP characters among the unwashed masses, we will need to constantly remediate R's abilities instead of introducing new system complexities that will challenge R to really grow and deal with the bigger picture....let's just keep him focusing forever on the fly shit, and when it gets too complex we will detonate another nuclear device and viola...but hey, it will get you chapters faster.

Radar

That's my stance on this. The buildup now is to the Calamity. That has to be the end goal of the story. And as strong as RG is, he's gonna need help. Plus new characters are interesting

Tibstrike

I honestly think this sit back for RG is necessary. He came back from a place where even the lowest of elites in Shal's world complete destroy an army of RG's world and RG was basic sitting at the top of those guys with not higher than that. It would be boring if he came back to Donnytown and destroyed both champions. If he came back there would be no challenge at all for him on earth given its level of development in the system, so this "crippling" time as people seem to be calling it which is right since he could probably beat anything with a single backhand to the face even in this current state. In conclusion, P is doing the right thing. RG can now make others stronger, allow the story to move at a manageable base without some bs reason RG can't just wipe everything out and allows P to work on other characters while allowing RG to do some thinking with some plot device that doesn't make sense get in the way. Besides the buildup for RG to be completely recovered and from foreshadowing at the end of the Shal arc he will be stronger than ever. P in my humble opinion if you do only do one thing right in your writing (which isn't true you do alot of great things) it is buildup to awesome events.

Lord Freezy Pop

Well downgrading him is one way to make him non-OP if desired, which I submit is the easiest and fastest way to write (more of same) or there can be more creative ways to deal with Randidly having to challenge himself which would take longer to write. I get it. Also, do not forget R is still just fly shit in the pepper to the system - at some point he does need to be stronger - much, much stronger. What is the big deal about having R capable and strong???? Jeez. MORE IMPORTANTLY, why should i get emotionally involved again with new characters for 160 chapters when they will just vanish one way or another???

Radar

Besides, when he rebuilds his skill its going to be even stronger than it was in the first place, and it was already stupid strong.

Kurt A

I see what you mean but RG is coming back from a "mature system" to an infant one. RG was hugely over powered before he left and then had years of intense training to build on them against established powers who do nothing but train. You need some way to downgrade him or it will simply be him going from one push over to another. Shattered skill i guess makes some sense based on the gear making up clockwork skill.

MattMick222

OK you need more bluntness...Randidly time its already been over a month...meanwhile everyone languishes in purgatory....like I said this scene is fine, however, make no mistake, he has set this need for Simon to last a long while....I am butt hurt about investing emotions in new character development only to seemingly have them obliterated and/or mostly forgotten because ????????? I think the whole R dependence on a drug dealer to not make him "OP" thing is just a bit of easy writing to rehash R's progression once again as a weakling on Earth instead of dealing with major issues. ....It's P's choice. But, for some of us, it smacks as a bit of a lazy writing mechanism and frustrating. I do recognize this is an experimental web serial and meant to be a bit of buttered popcorn AND there is a lot of pressure to write quickly... but, at some point we just have to stop dropping loose ends??? I am a big P supporter and still am,,,,so much potential...but he does need honest reader feedback. He can ignore me if he chooses and I will still hope he gets laid Friday after finishing his planned 2 chapters ;)

Radar

You guys are acting like Randidly has been crippled for tens of chapters already. Jesus christ.

Tibstrike

^^ he has a point. Honestly the crippled randidly is super irritating, unless he achieves a new soul skill which would be absolutely amazing.

***SPOILER ALERT*** OK, so just a guess here: the wild rider dies at the hands of Skeletor, Randidly ends up with the Ivory Stag - Ghosthound/Ghost-looking Stag, Randidly eventually defeats Skeletor at the gates of Donnytown. As a side note, Randidly remains a cripple (because he is too OP - sarcasm) dependent upon Simon for drugs, we never find out what happened on Shal's world (because we invested 160 chapters) until Randidly is finally healed around chapter 8,645 (as he finally remembers weeping cloud skill), at the same time, we learn everyone Randidly cared about back on original Earth died or became evil because he doesn't get to them in time. I could be wrong or just a little disappointed in the abrupt, everyone dies convenience, unsatisfying, non-ending on Shal's world that has made me a bit sanguine. Question to P: was that method of transitioning to Earth intentional? It smacked of a bit of laziness (everyone dies and magically R is on Earth) unless you have a grand strategy here that makes sense which you are quite capable of having...just letting you know as a reader, if it was just being a bit lazy or bored, that it sucked for some of us who liked that section of your writing as it received the most character development. Meanwhile, yes, your current scene is interesting - you are more than capable for sure...nonetheless, I encourage you to stop abandoning all these loose ends like you did early in the story.

Radar

Nice Wiki. Seven Kata could be updated with 2nd entry.

Radar

yea i like to see this character growth, knowing he is so messed up even a village spirit thinks hes going to die. thats one thing that people keep doing in this world is underestimating the ghosthound. I hope he gets along with the wild rider, cause i would love to see some kind of animal companion even if he has 2 already if you count his soul seed skill (what ever it was called)

I like the village spirit, less adversarial than at franksburg and much more competent than Nul. She was willing to hurt herself in order to tell Simon more about the dreamer class even though she didn't want him to take it. She was also honest about her classes where the others claimed to give the best ones bar none. It is interesting how she failed to realize that Randidly had way too many skills.

Alan McBrayer

Btw ppl, I got around to catching up randidly's stat page on the wiki to the rrl chapters~ ;D

MagicWafflez

Well, he hasn't been walking around like a cripple. He's been walking around punching things to death with crazy high stats. Most people don't even realized he's hurt, just that he can decimate their tank with a minor hand movement...

MagicWafflez

Can we not waste a bunch of chapters with Randidly walking around like a fucking cripple?

Nick Nicholson

I wonder the ranking maybe isn't how good the class is, but how good the class is for You. Like, in 5th cohort, where all aether is spear based, any other class would be poorly rated. Also, if you trained in spearmanship all your life, it would rank higher for you than say, simon.

MagicWafflez

whats the ranking for the spear user class? 80/100? more? less? And I'm talking about the average ones.

Kurt A

Especially the extra one!

Thanks for the chapters!
