[NEW VIDEO!] The Time Reversibility Paradox - Entropy is Strange

Comments

Great video, now I feel like watching Tenet

J-J

haha well it's just like jumping on a trampoline on solid ground after all ;)

Up and Atom

Jade look at what you have done! Now I want to jump on a Trampoline on the back of a moving truck. Forget that I am 77 years old, it just looks like too much fun! If anyone laughs at me I am just repeating an example of Frames of Reference!

James Mahoney

aww thanks so much for this comment Nico. Makes my heart sing :) Your girls sound so smart and curious!

I watched this with both my daughters aged 9 & 10, the explanations were so “to the point” and beautiful that my kids fully grasped the topic. Jade, well done, you’re an amazing educator and I have little doubt that you will leave a mark on both my kids lives, and hopefully they take what they learn and curate an extraordinary existence full of wonder and curiosity at the universe we call home.

2:20 minutes into this video we have a split screen of Jade tossing a ball on an open playing field with a harmonic motion. Running the video forward or backwards shows no immediate distinction as to which actually happened. At a glance, one cannot tell which set of frames shows the video reversed in time. Volumes of hair get tossed, and yet, we cannot see any split ends forming to give us an arrow of time. If we could see individual hairs and Maxwellian tails and could illuminate and capture their images at a hundred frames per second, we may see hairs splitting, branching and growing in real time. A time-reversed video would have hair doing what every hair product boasts it can reverse, the effects of aging. For the sheep dog running along a beach, we can easily distinguish the real time movie from the time-reversed one because the dog's real torso movement from front to rear has an action minimizing rhythm that can only come from a well fed and loved dog. The joyful run gets followed by hours of sleep and semi-hibernation. Beyond the dog, the restless sea calls while it combs the sands and leaves behind a new picture each time the sea inhales and draws water into its body. The next wave rolls in like a rush of horses. You hear the sound, subtle vibrations that have a strength and causal significance all the way to Planck scales. I grew up with the following rhyme for our English Sheep Dog named Dr. Foster, concerning the irreversibility of some paths. "Dr. Foster went to Gloucester in a shower of rain. He stepped into a puddle up to his muddle, and never went there again." The sea around the cantering dog rolls in like horses and then smooths out as foam glides up a gentle and sandy finish and erases the lines from its previous work of art. A new relief comes into view as the waters roll back into the ocean's inhaling mouth. The washed and brushed beach gleams with detailed undulations that capture a unique moment and place. The next wave comes and the surface details vanish into atomic distances we cannot resolve. The hidden information, and history accumulates and gets folded and compressed like so many garments of our Earth's history. In the geologic layers you may find bones, not yet, ground into sand. A cup of tea tossed into a sea cannot be retrieved. Fuel gets used up. One cannot burn the same chunk of coal over and over again. Secondary and tertiary processes may get more mechanical work out of an initial load of fuel yet never bring it all back. Every conversion of energy from one form to another has a less than 100% efficiency. Half of the original energy easily becomes lost in diffuse forms from which it cannot be restored anymore than one can retrieve a cup of tea tossed into a sea.

a very low entropy state at the dawn of time - "One of the biggest mysteries in Cosmology" Job 11:7 “Can you discover the depths of God? Can you discover the limits of the Almighty? Matthew 13:11 Jesus answered them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. Deuteronomy 29:29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law. 1 Corinthians 15:51 Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed,

Great video. Maybe it might even inspire a future scientist to create a time machine someday LOL :)

So the direction of time is a result of the way the universe started, much like the direction of a river depends on where it starts, I guess? Really good video, and I've never thought about time as an emergent property before, super interesting. And I loved the cute hiking trail drawing :)

Parachuting Turtle

Yep - loved this one as much as the others. Like James above I would love to hear some of the speculation about why we started with such low entropy. Maybe the answer is "If we didn't start at low entropy, we wouldn't be here to ask the question".

Stephen Britt

Another question, is the direction of time based on entropy thing, a property of the whole universe, or parts of it? Could for example one galaxy be in a forward time state while another was in a back time state, depending on what was happening in those galaxies.

James Matheson

Thank you! Yeah unfortunately the theories are very speculative at the moment, it’s hard to pin down any evidence. I think we’ve still got a long while to go before we reach equilibrium. There is still so much structure around.

Up and Atom

Aww thank you, means a lot! :)

Up and Atom

Thank you John! :)

Really liked this video, would love to see a follow up on the theories about why we started at such low entropy. Also very curious about how much we can tell about where we are now in terms of entropy, like how far away from equilibrium is the universe right now?

James Matheson

This is the one that prompted me to become a Patreon.

Midnight Skeptic

Loved this one, Jade! This topic has always fascinated me, and you explain it as deftly as usual! 😀👍
