Chapter 1: Ruby's Worst Night

With inadequate lighting, Ruby's desk was an oasis of brightness in a corner of the dark warehouse. Next to her chair was a small stool on which rested her right leg as it was in a cast from her thigh to the base of her toes. A black stocking was covering them and it seems some of her henchgirls had a hard task to stuff it under her cast.

She had plenty of paperwork to do, but that didn't distract her from her recent worries today. She wondered if it was those concerns or the unusual heat of the night that made her sweat. When she wasn't typing some numbers into her laptop, her right hand rubbed nervously over her leg cast while her left hand gave her forehead some support.

Further away, in the middle of the warehouse, five of her workers, some of the most brutish and biggest women she knew, were busy carrying boxes from one truck to another. Ruby was under the impression they could work faster, too.

"Hurry up! If I end up with another broken leg, I will break yours, too," Ruby shouted to them with a subtle threat in her usual to command voice.

She shuddered, thinking of the prospects, if her workers weren't fast enough and continued to rub her leg cast, mumbling: "Cindy, that bitch! How did she notice I was smuggling her cargos. Anyway, while my henchies keep her attention somewhere, I can get as much as I can. When she realized her cargos were gone to her rival, I will be in a very far and safe place with lots of money. So, I guess all it's worth a broken leg, Ah! Damn, the pain and itch will drive me crazy!"

Cindy, the fearsome and cruel crime boss! Even her name made Ruby pray not to have forgotten anything for which she would have to pay dearly. In public eyes, Cindy was a young, elegant and philanthropic self-made lady. But behind the curtain, she was a mobster's boss, a star of evil who controlled all drug distribution in the city and even beyond. No one dared to sell over Cindy. And there was an easy reason for that. If she found out someone overdid her, she broke their limbs, one by one and feasted on their agonizing pain, when they finally laid on front of her with twisted limbs. Her two greatest subordinates, Polly and Gemma, were nurses once, know how to break every single bone in a body in the most painful way. With that bone breaking punishment, Cindy got a pretty great - or rather bad - reputation among all the other mafia clans and criminal gangs.

Ruby swallowed and wiped the sweat from her forehead. Just this one more night and then everything would be fine. Hopefully-

But that was as far as Ruby's thoughts got. With a thunderous noise, the warehouse gate was blown away and a truck sped into the warehouse as if it was going to run over everyone inside.

"Holy shit!" Out of reflex, Ruby dropped from her chair and crawled under her desk, seeking protection. Her plastered knee hit the floor hard, making her groan in agony. That she bumped her crutches with the tips of her toes, which fell on her casted leg, made her yelp another time. She noticed that all her workers had stopped loading and fled in different directions for cover. When the light of the truck blinded her, she held her hands in front of her eyes.

"Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, you really don't know how to learn a lesson even after getting your leg broken." With a calm voice, cold as ice, a woman, looking more like a girl, got out of that truck and walked with crossed arms to Ruby.

'Damn, It's Cindy!' Ruby's heart stopped beating for some seconds. From the cover under her desk, she watched Cindy approaching, wearing an all black suit with her long coat on her shoulder. There were an unlit cigarette at the corner of her mouth.

Right behind the crime boss her lieutenants Polly and Gemma followed. The redheaded Polly appears to be cute, but she was a great menace with eyes as blue as the ocean. She was dressed in a black vest over a white shirt with sleeves that were rolled up till her elbows. Gemma, black long hair and glasses that made her look like the harmless girl next door, was wearing a white shirt with a red necktie, that gave her a fancy look. She interlocked her fingers together and cracked her knuckles threateningly.

Ruby was trembling on the ground, and could almost feel that it was her own bones that were about to crack soon.

"What... Where are my henchgirls?" she stuttered with a weak voice.

Not saying a single word, Cindy took out her phone and called a number.

"Hello, Dr. Laura. It's me," she said, as always trying to use as few words as possible.

"I'm afraid I can't talk right now, Boss. I'm very busy at the moment." The voice on the other end of the line was hard to understand and sounded exhausted and excited at the same time.

"Oh really, why are you busy?" The corners of Cindy's mouth twitched mockingly while her confident glance rested on Ruby who was still lying on the ground next to her feet. To Ruby it was obvious she already knew the answer and that made her feel very uncomfortable.

"As you know, Cin, there are a lot of patients that need to be put into bodycasts." The voice from the phone sounded muffled, as if it was not near the face.

"Thanks, Dr. Laura! I am so regretful, that the most painful traction will give them the best prospects to heal." With these words, spoken out coldly, Cindy hung up and smiled at Ruby's shocked facial expression.

"Im... impossible!" She stuttered. Then she pulled herself together. After all, five of her henchgirls were left. "What... what are you waiting for, girls? After all, they are still humans like the girls they sent last time. Back then we were able to break their legs. Now go and get them, too!" she ordered her workers who had backed off the scene and were obviously insecure, what to do next.

Slowly the addressed women approached Cindy and her two comrades, though the uncertainty what was wise to do was written all over their pretty faces. While they were still pondering, if - and how - to attack Cindy, Polly and Gemma, Polly suddenly held a crowbar in her hand and hit the floor with it, making a intimidating crashing sound.

"Hey! If you don't want to end up like your buddies in the hospital, all casted and strung up in traction from your neck to your toes, you better leave this place to look if your mommy needs some help with her daily chores." Although facing a superior number of enemies there was not the slightest hint of fear in Polly's voice, but nothing else than self-confidence.

Ruby's henchgirls hesitated first, then stopped. Silently they stepped uneasily from one foot to the other, not daring to look Ruby in her eyes. Realizing, that she was left alone by her henchies, Ruby's desperation grew and tears dwelled in her eyes.

"I'm sorry... I'm really sorry, Miss Cindy. I made a mistake and I promise it won't happen again," Ruby crawled the short distance to Cindy and started to hug her legs, trying to apologizee as humbly as possible.

"You got your chance!" Without a moment's hesitation, Cindy kicked in Ruby's face with her knee, throwing her on her back. While Ruby moaned on the ground and touched her face to check if her nose was broken, Cindy bent down and grabbed Ruby's leg cast. "This fucking cast is the proof that you have already made a mistake!" With brutality she raised the broken leg with a jerk, making Ruby scream.

"Please! Please!" It was all Ruby was able to beg, while tears ran down her cheeks, mixing with the blood that ran out of her nose.

Disgusted by her pathetic imploring, Cindy cast another look at Ruby, who squirmed at her feet, holding her plastered thigh with both hands.

"I don't accept a second mistake, Ruby," Cindy stated and smashed the cast to the ground with all her might.

"Ahhhhh!" Ruby's cry could have softened stones, but in a business like this, those whiny emotions made Cindy and her two buddies just smile.

Before Cindy leaned down to Ruby, she kicked her casted leg, which only made Ruby howl more terribly. Then she took Ruby's chin between her fingers and forced her to face her.

"Stop crying like that!" she hissed with a serious face expression. Without an effort, she gave Ruby a right hook on the chin, which was accompanied by an ugly crack, and flung her head backwards, where it hit the floor hard.

Cindy casually turned around and her disapproving look made Polly frown. "Polly, why are you being such a soft person?"

"Eh?" Polly looked helplessly at her crowbar as if something was wrong with it. "What did I do?"

"You just threaten these guys to stop if they don't want to end up in body casts," Cindy was still shaking her head. "No, no, no, no, it doesn't work like this!"

Cindy turned her back on Ruby, who was out cold on the floor, her legs spread. Taking the crowbar out of Polly's hands Cindy put it into the nearest henchgirl's hand. "I will make you an offer, you can't refuse: Wake up your boss with some well defined knocks. If your boss won't be able to move a toe or a finger when she leaves this warehouse, each one of you will be spared from ending up in a full body cast like her."

Getting close to her ear she said as softly as a mother speaks to one of her children: "Am I clear?"

Swallowing hard the henchgirls tried to look Cindy in her eyes. "Yes... yes!" And with a fraction of a second of hesitation she added. "Boss!"

"Good girl! It seems you are smarter than your former boss." Cindy smiled encouragingly and the henchgirl returned an uncertain hint of a beam. But Cindy was not finished: "Oh! And don't let her die or got her limbs cut off," she added in a conversational tone. "Otherwise you will meet Dr. Laura soon and be guests in our orthopaedic ward for the next year!"

First the addressed woman nodded and when Cindy let her look roam around to the others they nodded in awe and started to surround Ruby.

Right after receiving the first hit, Ruby woke up and groaned in agony. The sounds of of split knees, splintering shins, shattered ulnae and radii and bursting ribs was a symphony of mayhem in Cindy's ears.

As the warehouse was filled with sounds of smashed bones and Ruby's screams, Cindy gave Ruby one last look before she was allowed to leave her world of pain: "These are for Millie's broken leg and Sherry's broken ankle! I am sure, you will never forget it."

Outside of the warehouse, Cindy let the cigarette wiggle in the corner of her mouth. A split second later Gemma lit it up.

Inhaling the tabacco, Cindy breathed out the smoke while enjoying the sounds of mayhem, pain and destruction from the warehouse.

"Find out to whom these cargos are going, Gemma. I need to know who's working under my nose!"

"Yes, Boss! Consider it done!" Gemma bowed and headed out into the heat of the night.

Cindy took another drag, looking into the dark sky, lacking a single star. "Are Millie and Sherry safe, Polly?"

"They've left the city, guarding each other," answered Polly. "They will be fine."

Cindy nodded in approval. "Good! Now we only have to take care of our last rival, Polly!"

"Yes, Boss! From now on, it's just this mysterious rival, which stands in the way of our boundless wealth." Polly smiled. But then she furrowed her brow. "Dr. Laura will be sad if she soon can't get anyone else to put in plaster casts."

"In our position, dear Polly, we can always bring Dr. Laura any idiots who look at us askance!" And with an evil laugh, they left the place.
