Expression and Facial Variation Practice Sheet
Added 2015-03-27 07:36:34 +0000 UTCI was getting a bit tired of all my female characters looking like identical dolls with exchangeable hair, eye color and ears, so I decided to do a bit of practice on making different facial features, as well as a set of random expressions to see if I could be consistent. Pay no mind to the far right expression... Just imagine she's being fed strawberries! Also, I may get around to shading them all, but I ran out of time today. I suppose the static expressions on the left were the only ones I really needed to shade, for future reference...

XD I needed to practice open mouth, and I just kind of mindlessly drew that expression. Afterwards I was like "Huh... Looks kinda... Yeah..." lol

As an artist, it's easy to settle on what you think is "The best", and just keep reproducing the same features that you find the most appealing. It's not exactly second nature to try for something you wouldn't choose first. It's like standing in the candy isle and choosing your second favorite candy (that's a comment on style choices, not women, to be clear). For example, I would never have thought to add that pronounced bridge on the nose of the blonde, until I noticed that I had never drawn that on a girl. I wanted to see if I could draw it and make it look appealing to me. Turns out, I really like how it came out, and I wanted to try other things that I am not normally attracted to, and see if I can make them appealing. It's really eye opening, once you give it a try, and I really want to get that into more of my work. It will take a while, though, till I can set down my old habits of using the same facial structure, but this gets me a step closer! Thanks for the comment, dude, I appreciate it!
