1992 Mountain Bike gets Overhauled! (Flip Bike EP1)

Direct link: https://vimeo.com/580112935/766f2d1701

This series is happening—I don't know for how many episodes but I already have more bikes lined up. This can teach the audience (and me) so much about bike repair, the used bike market, and making the most efficient upgrades from a cost standpoint.

Normal parts bin upgrade videos are fun, but having the constraints of actually needing to make a profit adds a whole new dimension. This is why "Flip Bike" will air on Berm Peak. I'll probably do one episode of this per month until it either flops, or proves to be a good format.

Let me know what you would like to see!

1992 Mountain Bike gets Overhauled! (Flip Bike EP1)

Comments

You didn't have to true the wheels at all?

Roger Fischer

I just caught up with the channel and I love this vid! My very first mountain bike was a DB Topanga! This takes me BAAAACK!

I love this. I do this for fun and keep the bikes or end up selling occasionally or giving them to friends or others. It's a pretty cheap hobby as far as most Hobby's are concerned. It should be of note: many towns have co-ops or places you can go do this for charity or fun if that's your thing.

i have a question i was talking abt an idea really similar to this couple months ago in one of the comment sections (on patron) and im assuming other people have been telling u to do something like this i just wanna know when/who made you fully decide that u wanted to do something like this

Cool change of content. Keep it up!

You have the bike part down pat.....your flipping needs some work! Sweet video

I ride my dad's first "mountain bike", a 1992 chromoly Giant Rincon, as a commuter to this day, every week. It's been stripped to the frame, repainted, and every single part (except the frame, fork, and headset) have been updated. Shimano M8000 drivetrain, 40t 1x chainring, tubeless(!) old rim brake Mavic wheelset, etc. It's the perfect commuter bike, a respectable 27 pounds, and I put more miles on it than any other bike. I just wish I could post a picture here. Great vid!

$275.

I got pretty excited about this - I have a 1992 Gary Fish...enstein with purple paint with metallic silver and teal splatters. Three chainrings, Suntour drivetrain. Gel seat. Bar ends. (Yes, bar ends.) I am the original owner. I thought, "Seth is gonna show me how to turn my piece of crap into a coveted classic!" Unfortunately, there is nothing actually wrong with it, besides having no suspension and weighing a metric ton. Shifts good, brakes brake, good tires. So, thanks for nothing, Seth! If I take the gel seat and bar ends off would you give me $275 for it? I paid $400 for it back in '92.

Great reno! Nice concept. Just curious with all the work that you put into it, how much did you have it listed for?

hey I live in NC could i be in a video some time. maybe could you teach me to work on a bike in one of the flip videos and please replie to my message i sent you its a private message

I have refurbished a few bikes in the past and I have the same problem. I just wanted to keep them.

I'm looking forward to more in this series. I flipped quite a few 90's and early 2000's mountain bikes in 2020, which helped pay for other bikes. I always got the bikes cheap or free and, while I sold them for a profit, I sold them below market value to get bikes to people who needed them. It's just as well that you replaced those x-fire shifters. I think they were only made for a year or two between thumbies and the rapidfire Shimano makes now.

Michael Newman

Haha I did the same with the Sharpie! Great minds think alike

Great idea for the series. I recently fixed up an older Trek for a friend. I had similar issues with the shifters and with parts availability being what it is, I couldn't find a shifter/brake lever combo. My solution? Get the 7 speed shifters that were available and just like Seth, chop off the old shifter mount and use the brake lever. I even used a black Sharpie to "paint" my cut area. I have to admit, it was a cool vintage bike with an awesome paint job and I hoped the repairs were more than they would want to pay. I'd have gladly paid $70 for that bike.

Pro tip, when you get an old bike strip to frame and buff the frame paint rubbing compound using a random orbital buffer. Then follow using same technique but with polish/wax. The renewed shine is unbelievable. Also, why not rebuild the hubs/bb as well true the wheels since it’s all apart.

This is great content, feels very old school Seth and nice to switch the focus on bikes again!

It's like when my wife and I fostered dogs. Eventually, we were going to "foster fail" and keep one. I don't know if we ever failed on the first one though. 🙂

I have the same GT Agressor Pro that was shown in the intro. I have it in a grey and orange color sceme while both my brother and best friend have them in the blue green black like yours. We all got them from Dick’s. Over time I upgraded the parts and just made the feel of the bike more serious than it actually is as an XC bike. I built jumps in my backyard and that bike absolutely shredded for how much I paid for it ($350). Anyways, I still have the bike with some swapped components but recently a friend sold me his Giant Trance for $500 and I just couldn’t pass up a deal like that. So now I have a real mtb, but I couldn’t have asked for a better starter bike than the GT Agressor Pro (Frame Size Small).

Great idea for a series. I’ve been going through this myself with a 1998 Trek Singletrak. I intended to keep it for cruising around town and using for trail work days, so I spent a bit more money than I wanted but it’s turned out nice. Put a modern fork and disc brake on the front, new takeoff handlebars, and a parts bin saddle, but otherwise everything is still original. It’s rewarding to get old stuff working like new again. Excited to see what’s next in the series.

You should make the profit add up from episode to episode.

Great idea for a series. The old girl scrubbed up well. A little piece of my cried out when I saw the extreme cross chaining you had going on at one point! ;)

Sounds like it's going to be a great series! One suggestion, maybe mention what parts would have cost if they weren't coming out of the parts bin? Gives a better idea for people who may wanna do something similar but don't have a load of parts laying around.

Awesome series! I have a couple 20 year old bikes I've Frankenbiked together (disk rear, lever fronts, Shimano 3x ft w/ sram 9x rear, etc) with the parts bin. I really need to just make them good all around, upgrade to "more modern" tech then sell them or give them away. This series will definitely help inspire that venture.

I know how each and every episode is going to go… 🤣

Was visiting from out of town Monday and spotted you driving by in Brevard with this bike! Awesome bike and a great idea!

Love the video. I'm sure it's going to be a great series.

I have a feeling this series will be a banger

Now that definitely needs to happen!

It's really rewarding!

I'll be speaking about this soon. Right now the site is insured by Elevated Trail Design, so I can't bring anyone in until the town is in charge of it. Once the site is officially town property I can hold a Patron ride day. Right now we don't know when that is.

Ok, you want a challenge? Refurbish a tandem bike. I'm about to refurb my 1993 Specialized Rockhopper for my son. Step 1: throw out the polymer fork shocks with 1" travel.

Just refurbished a Raleigh Kilimanjaro myself!
