Meridia Quilton was also a nevma, same as Safi, except her animal was axolotl instead of fox. Animal choice often runs in families, as certain bloodlines are predisposed towards specific kinds of animals. Most mammals are a safe choice in general, but something like amphibian or avian can be dangerous if the nevma lacks any close ancestors with similar animals.

Other questions:

To Safi: What's it like having a tail and those ears? Is there any stigma attached to them?

S: Not where I grew up, outside of the occasional baby pulling my tail.
S: That said, after I started traveling with Rika there were some areas where I wasn't wanted. We once passed through this one elven town that was clearly trying to glare me to death. I can't blame them though, the town was pretty close to Nerikalzi.
S: Nerikalzi being one of the largest Nevma-majority countries. They have a fairly rigid cast system based on animal type, with foxes being fairly low cast - I could only shop in certain places at certain times of the day and such - but at least I don't have to risk being exiled or put to death for daring to bear the royal seal. We did one job there, I wouldn't recommend it. Especially not near the border if you're an elf. At one point we literally put a bag over Amber's head and claimed she was Rika's cursed sister.
S: Anyway, it isn't hard to find a places that don't care what I look like. Most towns don't mind it much, if at all.
