been a while, got pretty busy and didn't have time to watch, so i'm doing the catch up now. but no, the mai stuff squarely falls under the category of "toriyama forgot about it". he totally forgot pilaf and the gang were aged down due to a wish, so he's treating them like actual children for the most part, hence the romance between mai and trunks as in his mind they are the same age. makes it somewhat f*ed up really, thinking how much (mentally) older mai should be than trunks, but it is what it is i guess^^
