Behind-the-Scenes: Dual-Socket Server Challenges

Patrick's on-and-off project for a few months has been a dual-socket X79 build. Because we decided to use the highest-end of the X79 Xeon CPUs, we faced a ton of issues with motherboard compatibility. We've had to order different memory kits, ask Intel to dig for X79 CPUs in its drawers, and ask EVGA to go find old RMA dual X79 motherboards. The challenge has been fun, but we're finally nearing a point where we can build this damn thing!

The goal is to use this as a compression server, just because it'd be kind of fun to build and use our X79 CPUs that we have accumulated. We might run a few benchmarks on it once it's all working, although it's not much of a gaming machine.

I bought a dual socket x79 board. It’s technically a C602 chipset I believe. Gonna use it for a home server. I’ll be following this build for sure!

Love it! Looks a lot like some of my 'creations' I've tossed together over the years. And I have an SR-2 motherboard currently running and crunching SETI w/5 GPU's attached, lots of threads crunching... And actually reasonably stable to boot for a few years now running some version of Linux. Set and forget type of setup.
