GN Gear Loadout for Remote Coverage

Hey everyone!

We’re finalizing our Computex coverage and we thought some of you might be interested in hearing about our equipment and how we operate on the ground in Taiwan.

Our equipment setup is important for our work flow and keeping things efficient. Actually, our tradeshow coverage is where we’ve really done our best over the years. We’re at a stage now where it’s a very manageable workload. Despite higher video volume, this style of video is really...

Patrons Ask GN Update - May 2025

Hey, everyone!

I've never tried this before, but decided to just upload the video straight into Patreon. Hopefully it handled it OK. After the upload, Patreon yelled at me to use a lower bitrate and resolution next time. If it's no good, we'll upload it to YT unlisted instead.

We have a new Patrons Ask GN episode. Since this is the first Ask GN video in a while, we aggregated and answered viewer questions from recent video uploads and our last Patreon post. For the YouTube ones, w...

Updates! Cooler bench overhaul & moving to X3D

Hey everyone!

We wanted to give you all an update to the behind-the-scenes progress on our lab and testing overhauls for the past month. Our big video projects were the Thermal Grizzly factory tour and the Tariffs documentary, but in the lab, we’ve been working on totally reworking our testing for coolers (again!).

Over the last few weeks, we’ve overhauled our CPU cooler test bench to align with our current CPU recommendations and use newer equipment. We’re moving to AM5 wit...

Overhauls & Upgrades! Fan Tester, GPU Benches, CPU Benches

Hey everyone!

I've been compiling a big list of overhauls and upgrades we're making lately behind the scenes. We're filming some of them, but lots of it is just never going to be shown (besides getting used in video), so I thought I'd share it here since it won't be anywhere else.

List below as we set up for next year!

Fan Tester

First-up, the long-awaited fan tester: We fell behind on this project as the acoustic chamber, laser scanner, and full overh...

Some Incoming Website Overhauls

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to update you all on some of the stuff we're working on outside of the main YT channel!

First up, we've been continuing to bring content to the website since we re-launched it in November of last year. I think we just got around to getting all the Zen 5 reviews published in written format. If you're not familiar with how we're handling that, the short version is that we have someone on staff (Jimmy Thang, former Maximum PC writer and formerly worked und...

Behind-the-Scenes: Intel Report

Hey everyone - (and probably Intel PR!)

We have been working on a report diving into more of the Intel failures. The story has been covered to death on the technicals and possible causes, so what we are working on currently has more to do with Intel Corporation's actions historically to these types of situations. I thought I'd give a preview for Patreon supporters.

Currently, we are going through as much of Intel's history as the team can remember to try and better understand if i...

Big CPU Cooler "Mega Charts" update

Hey everyone,

We've updated the Mega Charts for CPU coolers on the website! This is the first major update since we launched these pages in December of 2023. You can find the Mega Charts overhaul for CPU coolers here:

Massive Bench Overhauls & what we've been up to

Hey everyone,

We've been grinding away at the benches lately! I'm not sure how obvious it's been externally, but production volume has been way up and we've really been getting to work on the deep-dive content.

Other than the various investigations, we recently published an ITX case review, two ATX case reviews, the NH-D15 G2 review, and the Thermalright AIO review. Here's what we've been working on to facilitate all of those, as a behind-the-scenes update for our Patreon backers:...

Patreon Bonus: GPD Win 4 2023 Early Thoughts & Initial Testing Process

Hey, everyone!

If you saw our recent ASUS ROG Ally review, we've really had a lot of fun beginning work on handheld reviews. This has furthered a few things outside of handheld testing for us: First of all, it's served as a really controlled use case for our acoustic chamber, so we've had a smaller list of devices that are much simpler to test (there aren't many ways you can use a handheld system, unlike customizable PCs). Having these smaller/controlled test cases allows us to develop ...

Installing Rails to the Ceiling | Studio Upgrades

Hey, everyone!

This video is unique! Vitalii and Andrew took turns following Mike around during a few of his work days over the past few months. You get to see what his work day looked like as he designed, built, and installed a rails system to our ceiling for lighting and camera equipment. It's one of the best upgrades we've ever made, and the changes have greatly helped Vitalii when collecting b-roll footage of products. Stuff goes a lot faster and we regained a lot of floor space by ...

Steve & Mike Making Stuff Happen - Behind-the-Scenes

Hey, everyone!

This video features both Mike & I walking through the studio and showing a few things we don't normally show. One of them is our new camera organization we've done in the closet. We don't have a lot of camera gear compared to some other YTers (mostly because it's simply not our focus), but the stuff we have needs to last forever -- so we put a new organizational system in place that you may be able to learn from for non-camera storage too. Mike also talks about ...

Website Rebuild, 24/7 Bench Operation, & Upgrades

Hey everyone,

We just stacked-up about 6 videos, so we're finally at full production after an extended 3-week period of internal operations improvement. I loved the time away from production we had to just make things even better, and the team is feeling fresh and excited to get going on the upcoming X3D parts. Not to get too deep into the philosophy of managing a company or anything, but one of the things we've decided as a team that we like is periods of 2-3 weeks where we decide "we'...

GPU Die Lapping with EVGA's Overclockers

Hey, everyone!

Thanks again for your continual support as we get more into field reports like the big EVGA video on the main channel! I spent a few weeks personally editing it -- the plan is to pass that work off to editors later, but I had to figure out how the storytelling process works with that much footage before I could even begin to answer how I wanted the video to come out.

This is something we've talked about indirectly before, but never directly. I wanted to write a quick behind-the-scenes on some stuff coming up.

Paradigm Shifts that have Grown GN

Hey everyone,

I wanted to write an update to you all about the flow of GN's work right now and some behind-the-scenes stuff.

Some of you might remember that, a few months ago, we took a couple weeks off from heavy publishing and pared-down to about 1-2 videos per week. We were still working in that time, but I mentioned in the public videos and (in more detail) the Patreon posts that we were working on advancing some internal processes. Basically, it's the adage of "work on the bu...

What We've Been Working On

Hey everyone!

As you all may know, we recently took a couple weeks of break from working on / publishing big technical pieces so we could refine processes. We keep working during that time, but normally I give the team 5 days off so I can just tie-up loose ends and build some processes for new work going forward. I have to do this 1-2x per year for a few reasons: One is to prevent burnout -- it's hard to manage and also improve the testing methods, increase video quality, and maintain q...

Big Internal Improvements & Cleaning the Sound Chamber

Hey everyone,

We took about 2 weeks to sort of work behind the scenes on a number of things. Those include me personally going through hundreds of hiring applications (took quite a while), working on SOP writing for our testing processes, smoothing-out our project tracking software, and other internal stuff. Basically, a couple times a year, I like to have a period where I can (as the saying goes) "work on the business" instead of "working in the business."

I still need a few days...

The Noisy Battle with Test Consistency

Hey everyone!

Here's another video with Mike on the testing team. This was actually shot before our sound chamber's arrival, but the testing laid-out here is still used (currently) for all noise testing. This mostly gives some small insights to the unique challenges we face when trying to control the environment for test quality and data accuracy. This is something a lot of less experienced testers will overlook, so we figured it was probably worth showing some behind-the-scenes on it.<...

Temporary Acoustic Chamber Build (Patreon Behind the Scenes)

Hey everyone!

We recently built a temporary acoustic testing 'chamber' to bring noise levels down to our baseline from the old location. We had an interesting challenge: Don't make it too good. It'd be easy to make this setup much better, but we actually don't want it to be better than the old location (yet); we want something that matches, but doesn't require multiple retests.

Mike, our cooler test technician, will walk you through it!

GN Server Maintenance & Upgrades (Behind the Scenes)

Hey everyone,

We've been in the new space since the Alder Lake reviews! In between reviews, we had a few hours where the editors were out of the office, and so that gave Stone a time to take the server offline and upgrade the RAM and clean the dust. We needed some extra capacity for all the work we're doing lately. This is basically just a file server (the one we built with Wendell), but the RAM does get utilized with how many people we have connecting during a day.
