Patrons Ask GN 23: Thermal Paste vs. Cold? Voltage vs. Lifespan

New Patrons Ask GN! Thank you for your patience while we've been juggling multiple big reviews!

TIMESTAMPS below:

Burnout?

00:16 – MustangsbyMatt: “@Steve Burke Do you ever get burned out from the constant work and long hours? What do you do to recharge?”

Thermal Paste vs. Cold?

00:47 – SerpentXSF: “#askgn-questions @Steve Burke I am curious, we know that certain paste, or thermal interfaces can crack under sub-zero temps. However with Jayz chiller, would sub-ambient cooling cause issues with thermal coupounds? #askgn-questions Excuse me thermal interface with Ln2 can crack, but what about in sub-zero. Or using chillers, does it have an impact on thermal compounds?”

Voltage & Temps vs. Lifespan

02:52 - Partial Noobity: “#askgn-questions I've herd some conflicting data on overclocking. Some articles i have read state that its not voltage that kills components, its temps. But other places say to never surpass sertan voltages even if your temps are in a "safe" range. Is there truth to both or is one just wrong?”

Diagnosing a Bottleneck

04:46 – rezbrick: “#askgn-questions Hi Steve, is monitoring percentage usage of CPU Core and GPU sufficient to diagnose bottlenecking between those two? I ask because the cores on my 3930k (4.2 OC) CPU rarely exceed 80% usage in SotTR while my 1080 Ti is often at 100%, yet the games benchmarking tool indicates that I’m 20% CPU bound. What is going on here? CPU frequency vs. percentage usage? X79 platform too slow? What tools can I use to measure whatever the issue is? Thank you”

Firmware Modification of RTX

06:40 – zombienerd: “#askgn-questions @Steve Burke How hard do you think it would be to modify the firmware on the RTX cards to increase the maximum power target?”

Comments

@AskGN Attempting to plan out how I should build out. Going with the 9900K like for the high base/turbo clocks without overclocking. However, I've been finding conflicting data, or a lack of data on how PCH lanes will be on many of the motherboards in z390. Futhermore, if I ran a NVMe PCI-E SSD (ie. Samsung 970 Pro) would the PCH lanes allow it to run full speed 4x? Or does this throttle the CPU-GPU PCI-Express lanes from 16x to 8x to effectively provide more bandwidth to the PCH/chipset PCI-E lanes. For instance reading the Aorus Master manual, and it explains how it will disable some of the SATA connections if a m.2 SSD is installed, but does not remark what effect it will have on the CPU lanes overall. Man, all this data makes me want to just wait for Skylake-X refresh except their clocks aren't as aggressive out of box as Coffee Lake refresh. Not sure which would yield more real-world performance.
