Patrons Ask GN 18: Faster Stress Testing? YouTuber Burn-Out?

Hi all!

We somehow managed to shoot the usual 3x Ask GNs even while moving into a new office. This one takes Patron questions, but we have a request: If you have questions about how we're going to use the office going forward (barring questions we won't answer for security reasons), please post them in the Patreon Discord. It'd be fun to do an office-specific/move-specific question set for Patreon backers. It's a special occasion!

Another Patrons Ask GN episode! Thanks for all your questions!

Have You Tested Small VRM Heatsinks?

00:53 - Satoshi_Nakamoto: “#askgn-questions Hey team I was wondering if you guys have ever done any testing on products like 5T to use them for VRM cooling? That could be a good video”

Any Faster Way to Stress Test?

02:58 – bozLast: “#askgn-questions We all know how much time benchmarking and stability testing takes. Set up bios reset wait till windows loads or crash repeat ad nauseam. Do you know any live usb linux distros that can speed up this process? Is there a fast distro to test basic stuff like cpu and ram is stable enough to boot windows?”

Case Testing Methods

04:59 - Turbo Taliban Tim: “#askgn-questions Hi GN, what methodology or reasoning is behind the components in the case testing bench? Do you find them to be similar components that an average user might have? Something you've always used in tests and it was just sort of grandfathered in? What made you stick with those components?”

How Do YouTubers Keep it Up?

08:00 – muddymind: “#askgn-questions I've been wondering for some time about the personal life of youtubers in general. The impression I get is that you go way over the typical 40h/week of work and barely take any vacations. How the hell can you keep it up without reaching extreme exhaustion or burn out? Huge kudos for you guys for consistently being able to deliver great content without fail.”

Thoughts on Extended Warranties?

13:31 - Honey Tree Evil Eye: “#askgn-questions Hey Steve. I recently purchased a Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 ti from newegg. I got an email reminder about buying the newegg warranty for $70. What are your thoughts on extended warranties and are oem warranties sufficient? Thanks”

Comments

I have read about lots of guys using super glue due to the low viscosity and just putting a spot in the corners. Just to hold things together.

I know this is "off-topic"... But... STEVE> I've heard you mention silicone sealant.. context: deliding CPU (or more specifically RE-lidding). You are generally very much against this. For several reasons, most of which seem to be related to the gap caused by the silicon's fluid viscosity, maybe? Or elasticity? Question is: I'd like to know how you've attempted this process? Was this from a nozzle tip? modified tip? or transferred to a syringe? This has been bouncing around my brain for quite some time now (since Feb, I think), and just trying to fill in the gaps (no pun intended, or intended?). Since I have yet to see or hear you comment about this process with a clear "step-by-step" so that I can make an attempt with an idea that I've had. I'm going to give this a shot either way, just though I'd ask for some clarity? Thanks again, and keep up the AWESOME stuff :D

We were only in Japan for 3 days, and all 3 involved a hell of a lot of work, so...

Maximum effort, Steve. Almost done with the hard part if not already done with it ;)

They kinda took a "week" off in Japan when returning from Computex but I feel that the move should have been prior to it :P

Yours was shipped this weekend! Should get a shipping notice when the carrier scans it on Monday.

you guys should take a week off...it might help? you guys have to be tired. with the new digs, take a step back and get your wind.....as always, i appreciate the hard work and wonderful content!

You must construct additional pylons!

It's good to see you guys are enjoying your work. I too run my own business and know just how exhausting it becomes. When you love what you do, it makes it a little different. It's not burnout, its just overwhelming sometimes. Looks like you are doing great handling the work load though. Thanks for working so hard on this content. Your supporters truly appreciate an honest reviewer and educator. Keep up the great work and content!

To your first point about pointing a fan directly at the VRMs, that's probably the mindset Asus is taking with the Ryujin cooler having a fan in the header.
