Modified LitR: Quests
Added 2024-10-12 20:00:04 +0000 UTCQuest mods are potentially the most complex type of mod to add to LitR, primarily because they're basically compound mods, that can potentially include mutliple types of content that requires patching. I've already covered weapons, armor, and power armor, food and chems, and workshop settlement crafting in this series. Have a look back at the previous articles for how to patch those. You've also got PreVis to worry about, as quest mods often make changes to the world.
In addition to the stuff I've already covered in previous Modified LitR articles, you'll probably also want to consider balance. Loot scarcity is the first thing to consider. Less Dungeon Loot will cover staticly placed items fairly well without requiring any additional patching, assuming the mod uses vanilla items. And if the mod just reuses vanilla levelled lists, Lunar should cover reducing loot and ammo levels down to a reasonable level. Depending on how overboard the author went with decorating and static placement, this may or may not need tweaking. You'll also want to check out any custom leveled lists the mod uses, as well as checking for content. If a mod already has a lunar patch, that should cover most of what needs covering. The second thing to consider is enemy difficulty. LitR is designed to scale more slowly than vanilla, and a lot of mods struggle to hit the sweet spot for balance.
The good news, is that it's unlikely that you'll need to actually patch the quests themselves. Assuming that the mod author hasn't tried to modify any vanilla quests, although make sure to read teh modpage thoroughly, check for open bug reports, and the comments page.
The bottom line when it comes to something this complex is that you'll just need to test it. It may not need any patching at all, or it may be completely incompatible. If you're not comfortable looking at this stuff in fo4edit, then just trying it is the only way to see. I strongly recommend making a backup save before installing the mod, so that if you need to you can roll back, and only install the mod right before you're ready to try it out, so you don't risk needing to roll back hours of play time.
In the long run, expanding the content offerings of LitR is something I'm interested in. The removal of SS2 and FSD has left some space in the list for additional content, however finding things that fit in with the vibe of LitR can be tricky. Over the history of the modlist, various quest mods have been included, and a lot of them have been removed, either due to content or technical quality. That doesn't inherently mean you won't enjoy them though, so the Lunar Content patch page and teh Less Loot patch page is a decent place to start if you're looking to expand the existing content offering.
