Ashton Irwin | Skinny Skinny MV (Patreon Exclusive)

Powerful... to say the least.  Ashton is the drummer of 5SOS, but this is one of his solo tracks that was requested during our last livestream.  Incredible stuff.

Ashton Irwin | Skinny Skinny MV (Patreon Exclusive)

Comments

Ashton is so deep and thoughtful. Love him. And this song is heart-wrenching.

Bansai

Oh, and there is also a live concert video of the album which is cool because usually you don't see him as a front man.

Ashton's album was the first and only time I was able to recommend music to my Dad that he actually liked. Superbloom was even on his Spotify wrapped last year. Making him a 5SOS fan didn't work though but he went to a concert with me :D. And Luke's album is my favorite album. But I think it's best to listen to it all the way through.

Lina

100% want to be checking out Luke!

Max Beaumont

Skinny Skinny is extremely powerful song, the whole album is. Both Ashton's and Luke's solo albums are incredibly open, vulnerable, heavy and beautiful. I really hope you'll check out more because it really gives you insight into their minds. They seem much more comfortable sharing and speaking about their struggles in music, Luke especially because I feel like Ashton actually speaks quite openly about most of his struggles now. The albums are very different musically but both are masterpieces! And honestly, When Facing The Things We Turn Away From is without any doubt my favourite album of all time. Some of my favourite songs from both albums would be: Greyhound, Matter of Time, SCAR and Have U Found What Ur Looking For? from Ashton and Slip Away, Bloodline, Comedown and Place in Me from Luke, but every song is incredible.

I love all the songs on both the albums, but "Mum" will always be my favorite

Yes Max. This made my day. I wrote another comment but I have no idea where it went. lol. So I am not going to re write the whole thing. Luke's album is also very good. Both are on constant rotation in my house. (greyhound+scar+the sweetness from superbloom and place in me, slip away, mum, motion, diamonds, bloodline are my favs at the moment from Lukes album)

PettyCrockerXX(Annie)

Now that you have reacted to one song by Ashton, you should react to one by Luke too. I really like "Mum" and "Bloodline" by him.

amalie

thank you for writing this out. You are VERY good at writing summaries, every time I see a comment from you, im like YES! so much yes! lol

Wow. Thank you for sharing that Olivia. Had no idea how much he’s been through and overcome. Makes this song that much more meaningful. Sounds like he’s been an incredible source of strength to so many. Big respect to him and I’d like to dig deeper.

I'd love for you to react to more of Ashton's and Luke's solo songs. Just any from the albums. If I had to recommend you one of each, I'd say Greyhound by Ashton and Diamonds by Luke. Two of my absolute favourites

I requested the video in the comments. This is gonna be a long one, but just hear me out, I wanna give you some backstory about Ash Ash has been through so much, starting when he was still a baby. His father left when he was 2 and his mom fell into alcoholism. He grew up around drunk people and his family was also really poor, that he had to struggle eating week by week. He had to grow up really quickly to basically raise his yonger half siblings himself. By always having to be 100% positive for others, he lost sight of what true happiness was for himself. In a really early 5sos interview for a magazine, he admitted to self harming and he used to draw butterflies on fan’s self harm scars on their wrists. There was an absolute disgusting twitter trend going around back in like 2014, people telling him to keep self harming. He is still dealing with anxiety and depression today, but goes to therapy and takes anti-depressiants now. He also tackles those issues in other songs of Superbloom. In 2016, when the band went on a break he actually fell into alcoholism himself. Luke moved in with him, since he was also dealing with a post abusive relationship breakup and wasn’t comfortable being alone. Ashton said on twitter when he posted a pic oft them both, that they nursed each other out of a really dark and lonley place, how much he loves him and how proud he is of him. Ash has now been sober since mid 2019, but he did develop severe anxiety and he felt like he couldn’t be happy, that he doesnt deserve it, doen’t know how to feel happiness. That was when the therapy and ice baths before each live show came into play. Starting quarantine Ash fell back into a dark hole and decided to face all his pain head on by making an album (Superbloom) full of working through his self doubt and problems. Concerning Skinny Skinny, he said that he struggled with body dismorphia since the age of 9, which developed into an eating disorder. Being in the public eye and constantly under scrutiny by the media definetly didn’t help his case. The song faces body dismorphia, anorexia and even bullemia (“my fingers stretching into my larynx“). Since he co-directed it himself he said how the video is a battle and fight against the demons that live in the mirror. He poured his past, present and future, his mind, heart and soul into this album and I think I speak for the whole fandom, when I say how fucking proud I am of him, that he pushed through, got the help he deserved and needed and is now helping so many others by tackling such important issues. We truely love him. Ashton is the dad of the band, he loves the guys, is their biggest cheerleader. It's so so amazing to see them supporting him in everyway just as he would always put them before himself. Thanks for taking your time to listen to him and hear him like he deserves to be heard. He did an online live concert of Superbloom and I actually have it on vinyl. The performances just hit so much harder. Ashton was the first one to put on a solo album, Luke followed few months later. Luke's album is called When Facing The Things We Turn Away From. Both albums are incredibly raw and heartbreaking as they are honest and powerful and I cried to both of them multible times
