The whole FUD over EVs is really baffling. All these "where will I charge it?" folks need to realize that electricity is literally everywhere. They don't take "special electricity". They're better for times of natural disaster because you have multiple ways to get or generate electricity, but you certainly can't make your gasoline. During that collapse of the grid in Texas, there were multiple stories of people retreating into their electric cars as essentially "life boats" while their house was freezing. You can't do that with a gas car (without killing yourself from carbon monoxide). That whole "EVs are SOL in the cold" is nuts because you what is even worse in cold weather for starting? Gas cars! It's literally cliche in movies of "it's so cold my car wouldn't start this morning" to convey a blizzard. If EVs had an issue with cold weather (compared to a gas car) then the best selling car in Norway wouldn't be a Tesla.

2024-02-27 18:42:16 +0000 UTCI run a 200 acre berry farm. All of our berries are hand picked. We rely on migrant labor to get it done. We don't pay under the table, we know many of them have false documents but we don't care, we don't have the time or resources to verify it. They are essential and the hardest workers out there. We pay by the piece (in our case, the box picked into). Some of our workers pick fast enough and well enough to make $30+ an hour, most make $20+ an hour and a few make minimum wage. You ask any white guy or gal who wants to close the border if they will pick berries they will say "no, that's mexican work". So how the fuck are we supposed to get our berries picked? The american farmer is stupidly glorified (trust me, I'm one of the very few progressive ones), maybe we should start painting maga people who want the border closed as anti-farmer.

2024-02-26 05:17:46 +0000 UTCMy parents went to UT in Austin TX in 69/70. They would go with a group of friends to fuck with the local Scientologist group. Dad said they would make up outlandish stories and use made up voices to fuck with them. This was in the days when they were using old tin cans for e-meters. He thought it was hilarious how badly run they were.

2024-02-25 22:48:32 +0000 UTCWhile desperately looking for a job (Texas, 1990), I came across a Scientology ad. It wasn't apparent at the time and I had no idea what it was. They had me take an "I.Q." test and scored pretty high. (I'm sure they inflated the number.) They seemed sincere and enthusiastic and wanted me to come back. I did intend to return. (Hell, it was a job.) Fortunately, all prospects ran out and I wound up joining the military.
