My Cage "Classic" 07/09/2008

This used to happen all the time to one of the people Maureen is based on. One time, right after going to court for a ticket, the cop who gave her the ticket asked her out.

My Cage

I have a friend who had looks like this for a couple decades. It's kind of like having a lot of money--it's hard to tell what people's motivations are for liking you. I saw it a lot. And while a lot of college was unrequited crushes for me, I was always relieved that I wasn't handed the same scope for making mistakes--guys who were assholes didn't hesitate to be assholes around a average-to-cute nerdy girl. It was off-putting to see them on their best behavior around her and other girls. . . I guess I'll just say "at her level", and to wonder if I'd be able to see them for what they were if it were always concealed around me. Cartoonist Kate Beaton once said something to her strikingly beautiful older sister that sums it up perfectly: "I hate those hot-shit meatheads who are always buzzing around you. I don't think they even see a person in there."

A cop asking out someone they gave a ticket to?! Wow, that must have been painfully awkward for that poor person. What was the cop thinking?!

Shawn Eaton

Not sure what the cop was thinking. Either way creeps me out a little. :(

My Cage

I'm gonna guess it's actually not fun to be Maureen.

Juan Chanco

That cop didn't even think to offer to waive the ticket in exchange? I was going to comment on the awkwardness of inter-class dating even among anthros, but then I remembered Jeff's first wife.
