Thank you Cecil for talking about your childhood. I can't express in words how much it helped me process how not ok my childhood was. It made me cry but it's also a weight lifted.

2023-06-08 12:25:45 +0000 UTCMy desire to homeschool is all the school shootings in addition to the things my state is doing/trying to do: lack of funding for most of the state, taking millions of $$ away from schools, promising to fund them with more $$ than they took away, then, legally, finding out the entire promised amount can't happen, witch hunts for CRT that isn't in kindergarten classes, witch hunts for porn that isn't in the preschool section of the library, and legislation that is trying to imprison librarians for allowing children to check out "harmful" material...without defining what "harmful" means, of course. This kind of crap just makes educators' jobs needlessly more stressful and complicated. 'Unschooling' looks pretty promising and there are homeschool programs out there that pay you back for buying resources and materials. I just learned about this. Tech Trep keeps coming up in these discussions: techtrepacademy.com. If you don't live in one of those states, look around for a similar program in your area. I have also heard of Harmony, similar to Tech Trep: https://harmonyed.com/parents/. I don't know how many/which states Harmony works with. Scratch that. Their drop down menu revealed active programs in these states: Arkansas, Hawaii, Idaho, Tennessee, Utah. From what I can tell these programs aren't religiously based, which is one of the most important aspects for me when looking for homeschooling information.

2023-06-08 00:52:39 +0000 UTCDamn, I lived this. My ex and her mom read everything Michael and Debbie Pearl wrote. We homeschooled our kids, spanked them. When I learned what we were doing was not just ineffective but vile and abuse, I told my wife we needed to have a serious change. She refused to accept I was no longer going to parent the way she told me to and wanted a divorce. A 3 year custody battle ensued in which I had to fight just to get them vaccinated and educated. This episode takes me right back there.

2023-06-08 00:48:23 +0000 UTCGreat episode, gave me a lot to think about as my wife and I were considering homeschooling our children. We have a two year old and a three year old so we still have time to reconcile our thoughts. Our desire to homeschool is 100% driven by all the school shootings. Every time we see it on the news it gets harder and harder to imagine sending our kids off to school. What’s the alternative for a below middle income family in America?
