I think a full English album is definitely where we're going...

Erika Thompson

PTD is underwhelming and butter is far superior. My mom started tearing up watching the video when the dancers were taking off their masks. I love the positive quotes throughout the video. I give BTS credit for going out of their comfort zone singing in a language they are not fluent in. Although the song is not that exciting it is challenging them in a different way. I am looking forward to what they will do in the future. I am looking for their mic drop American moment. Does anything else think they will make a full length English album?

SAJ

?? they're just in their 8th yr. let them live a little for crying out loud. Beastie Boys never had the goal of targeting a global audience.

jeanbee

BTS now reminds me of Beastie Boys late in their career. They've just mellowed out and is playing it safe.

After watching the after show, I agree with Danny that ptd wasn’t that good. As an army I like their all songs but this one was not my cup of tea. I understand that they want the Grammy again but I don’t think ptd will be nominated in my opinion, I think butter has a better shot.

I saw someone's video look up the location and it's some place in New Jersey, the same spot that one of the Star Wars movies was shot at.

I am not a fan of PTD. I feel that it was written to fit squarely into the Grammy American pop category, but this type of song is very generic and is not what made me a fan of BTS's music. Gender war in a homogenous country leading to a rise in diversity is a very unique concept and a great topic for a sociology thesis. LOL

Melodie Y.

I think it's because the mv is 5 min long :P, Butter was only 3 min

I love PTD. I am so thrilled to dance along to it. It encourages and motivates me a lot. Fantastic song and I wish it had more views. with the amazing vibes how does it not have more views?

캐서린 (Morton)

The gender wars just tire me lol. People should just love and accept people as they are.

캐서린 (Morton)

So happy that the TS company shut down. The artists deserved so much better and i hope they go on to better companies where they can be happy and perform.

캐서린 (Morton)

PS: I personally like Butter above all their full-english songs. But I still listen to Dynamite / PTD coz it makes me feel good whether I'm cooking, working, etc.

As a black kpop fan I feel like BTS needs to observe the musical tastes of Black Americans. They think they are appealing to western people but what makes music in the west appealing is how is takes from black music. Not even white people in the west like music like PTD. And I know they think that doing these English language songs is going to get them closer to a Grammy but we don't have a language issue in America. We have a racism issue. The reason they didn't get the Grammy is because despite performing in English, they aer still Korean people. It doesn't work over here the way it works in Korea or Japan where if you perform in the language of majority you'll be promoted well. You have to be in the RACIAL majority here. In the history of the Grammys only 10 black people have ever gotten album of the year despite being American and performing in English. BTS has the wrong idea about why they get shut out over here. You were already famous here. Your Korean music is much more appealing to Americans than your English music because despite being in Korean, it already sounded like American music.

otherbully .

PTD: First viewing, I wasn't excited... because it's not "deep BTS" as I love. But the more I watched it, and put it in context of "fun end-of pandemic song," it quickly grew on me. I like it now for the bop it is to just have fun. Reminds me of "Happy" by Pharrell Williams.

Sarah Padbury

While others miss the deep lyricism or theme of prev bts' songs/albums, I'm still positive that one day they'll release a song/album (whether full-english or not) and it will have that "bangtan style" feel & uniqueness to it. They might be preparing for something similar to HYYH, WINGS, LY or MOTS album series for their next album (rumored) in 3Q/4Q. Also, they'd have to continue the storyline of their BU so that may come anytime soon. But for now, I'm enjoying whatever they have released and I'll still be waiting & will be supporting for whatever that will come in the future.

I would seriously consider bringing on a Korean woman that is an expert or can speak about the gender conflict issue. I’m assuming a large portion of your audience are women, so amplifying a female voice that can speak to this issue is one way to be an ally for women.

Lisa

Before PTD was released, RM said that he preferred PTD over Butter. I don't enjoy being skeptical but I have to wonder how this could be. RM actually had a hand in writing Butter and is the most prominent hand in the BTS discography we love so much. The main criticism of PTD is that it doesn't sound like BTS. How could the person who so much defines that sound be willing to support a song which makes it look like BTS is having an identity crisis? I realize I may seem over dramatic but I have this sudden fear that this new position BTS have in the industry has made them feel like they must sacrifice some artistic integrity. By this I mean – it is a definite possibility that they have been convinced this is the version of themselves ARMY and the public would prefer and so they are willing to lose a part of themselves to fit that mold.

So let's all take a chill pill before freaking out. You don't have to like every single song they put out. I am an Army and I don't like every song they put out, for example ON with SIA XD haha. Though I really like PTD. It was indeed very Disney, but it does make me super happy every time I hear it and the melody gets stuck in my head.

Just got done with work. have not had time to watch DKNews yet. I have to go try to cram it in before this segment starts so i know what the hell is going on. lol. Although, I can truly say that I absolutely adore PTD and its a new favorite. It brings me much joy. It reminds me of my dancing days and makes me long for those days in a good way.

캐서린 (Morton)

I think the fanbase reaction to PTD is extremely interesting as a gage of why people are ARMY in the first place. There are many fans who are willing to look past the out of character song because they are just happy to see the boys enjoy themselves. There are others who want to fulfill the chart-topping dreams of the members and the company and to be able to brag about the success of BTS. Ultimately, I feel there is an overwhelming majority who would rather keep it to themselves that they are disappointed with the new song. This is my fear –– BigHit and the boys must be aware of the genuine reaction to the song to be able to find a new direction. I find it extremely difficult to imagine how someone could genuinely enjoy PTD as BTS' song. The song is badly produced, poorly written, and most frustratingly is out of touch with today's musical landscape.

My sister used to hate it when I played BTS songs as it's not in english. But she really liked dynamite and last week I was in the car with her and she had her playlist connected and it suddenly played boy with luv and life goes on....!!! I spent days, months, years to show her how amazing BTS' music is, and it took a song like Dynamite for her to start appreciating their Korean discography.

102090

I feel like TS Entertainment is one of the reasons my family/friends always brings up artists being overworked and not treated fairly as reasons I shouldn’t support the industry. Also on PTD, like a lot of BTS English comebacks I wasn’t in love with it when I first heard it and it’s not my favorite English song (that goes to Butter) but I found it brought a smile to my face and I’ve found parts of it I like like “when we fall we know how to land” etc. I understand it’s not necessarily their best song (please don’t come for me I’m ARMY and love the boys) but I think it’s still enjoyable and a mood lifter in this hard time. Objectively if it wasn’t by BTS I don’t know if I’d go out to find the sort of song but I enjoy it and it does make me want to dance so I think it’s done what it set out to do :) Like some other pointed out I also think it might give the boys a sort of cheesy image, (though from a fan perspective I like the styles etc) as first time viewers of BTS might only pick up the auto tune and more mainstream parts of the song.

Sarah Haynes

PTD is like a musical! Fun, hopeful, with a strong feeling of togetherness. It's a genuinely good song! Was the first thing I watched/listened to after waking up, and it made my day better. It made me happy, thus altering my life, even if for those short moments. I can't ask for more from a song:)) Because we're living in unprecedented times, ANY song they would release would get some sort of backlash, so it just makes sense that to constantly release good vibes songs is the best/safe choice rn. It's honestly hard to imagine a different title song, like their older ones, to be received better than D, B, PTD during these times. I can also see why many people dislike this style, catering to such a diverse and complex fandom as ARMY is huugely challenging, but I just trust their choices for why this song - now.

Thank you for sharing this perspective 💪🏽

Regarding feminism in SK, where are the feminist being heard? Are feminist (I’m identifying as bringing women up) speaking out against radical feminist thought (I’m identifying as bringing men down)? (In the US, we know all about the radical 10% of movement getting all the airplay.)

I really agree with what David was talking about the gender war being really the build-up of all the problems faced by Korean men that have been swept under the rug and not talked about. Korean men are clearly displaying their inferiority complex and it's only going to push more women away from men. No one outside of Korea will ever take their plight seriously they don't even know that there are different sectors of feminism, liberal, radical, cultural, etc. they look so pathetic I feel so sorry for Korean women having to deal with this stupidy while getting told that they fight for equality "hasn't made efforts" BTS song had a nice meaning but the song was not my style at all was kinda bad for me Also this was mentioned in the headline box in the video but I'm curious to hear your reaction to the sea fans vs Korean fans and the fan war between the two particularly aimed at Jennie and rose. whats the Korean Netz reation. Thanks

Leti yoco

Danny I think you would look really nice in a silver or gunmetal dangle spike earring. Not too big, about the size of the earring you’re wearing now. It would look good!

chillaxinchica

I find it hilarious that that men are that self conscious about their pensis sizes? Especially when I was self conscious of my breast size because of men consistently sexuallizing me to my face but that's not what I came to really get into. I grew up in a very typical "American" household, mom stayed home to take care of kids and dad was the breadwinner. It's also what media heavily displayed to us, but I don't understand why men seem to think they have to do it all? Like clearly newlyweds can't live the same way our parents did so I really don't understand what's the big deal with sharing expenses and income. Seems like it's just a matter of pride and people being stuck in a 20th century mindset

At first I thought PTD was Dynamite 2.0. Despite the video being adorable, the song is not my taste. However, it has grown on me . My very young nephews love it and it brings them so much joy. I miss the intensity of older BTS songs, however, we have to accept that they are in a different place in their lives now. This song is very upbeat and hopeful and maybe that's where they are. All those years and songs about hardship have gotten them to this place where they feel upbeat and hopeful, so if that's the case, then I can get with it too. It may be ingenuine for them to write songs of angst when they are feeling less angsty nowadays.

I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the COVID plot line (?) of PTD. Celebrating the end of covid... before covid is over? I've seen people talking about how their english songs feel palpably non-bts, like there wasn't much creative input from them, and that didn't bother me too much for butter and dynamite because they weren't really ABOUT anything, but BTS putting out this MV that very much has a message and story line felt weird. Like, why all the shots of people in LA taking off their masks? It felt weird in general (as a person living in LA right now and working in healthcare, we're not really celebrating anything and I would love if people would stop taking off their masks, actually), but also it felt weird that BTS were the ones putting out this song. I know the de-masking was (hopefully) meant as a symbolic gesture, but by involving an LA production crew and having an American setting, it's hard to ignore the political connotations. Even beyond that, the message as a whole felt... oddly-timed at best.

lettuce

PTD gives me straight up High School Musical, We're All In This Together vibes. I personally was underwhelmed and disappointed with the amount of auto-tune on their voices. It was just unnecessary for that particular song. It's going to be interesting to see what Billboard chart position it gets...

Lisa

My biggest issue with PTD is that the 7 members feel like "puppets" for Sheeran and the team of western producers. I never got that sense with Butter. Butter allowed the rapline to rap and allowed the members to smash the dance break. I think any pop group/pop star could have pulled off PTD. Unfortunately the things about BTS that made me fall in love with them are absent in PTD. Oh well, onto the next release!

Andrew

I don’t really like PTD. I love the video and I think the meaning behind the song is sweet and kind but it isn’t my taste. I really like Butter. I did enjoy seeing all of the members singing and I hope they will all sing more often in the future. I’ll just keep streaming Butter, BE, MOTS, D-2,Love Yourself Tear and You Never Walk Alone. I’ll keep supporting them just as I have over the last 8 years and can’t wait to see in what direction they go next.

chillaxinchica

PTD falls flat on my ears. I have listened to it a few times and I just can't get rocking with it. Of course the visuals are terrific and I love them all, but cutting down the rap line in each English song to now, where they are disappearing it altogether, I don't like it. I'm not an Ed Sheeran fan and I'm sorry they teamed up with him. I hope they come out next with a song in Korean or English like they have in their past that made me love them so much.

@San yes. I told my sister exactly that, it took me a long time to listen to BTS because I figured their music was fuck boy/cookie cutter pop. If these last three songs had been what I was originally introduced to, I would not have dived deeper into their music. I was never into artists like Justin Bieber, One Direction, or Ed Sheeran, precisely for the fact that their sound, though good, was not anything new or multifaceted. They were, and are, already in the western market, weather institutions such as the Grammys or Radio corporations acknowledge it or not, they didn’t necessarily need these type of songs to “break” into the western market. Ultimately though, at this stage, absolutely nobody is making the guys produce material they did not want to release. The western market, the Grammys, western radio stations, none of these institutions are pressuring them or making them do anything they themselves aren’t reaching for. We just have to be patient, their original sound is not gone, they will probably just be releasing both moving forward.

Laura

BTS aren't *only* doing English pop songs now but these are arguably bigger deals for them these days. Armys aren't streaming the others to 100 million views in a day. They aren't organizing funding and buying to keep those charting #1 for weeks. The members themselves aren't engaging with us about chart performance. The English releases have the most pressure behind them.

Erika Thompson

Don't you think it's a bit of a shame some of the general public are experiencing them for the first time as this cookie cutter generic boy band with these songs though? The artistry and authenticity they prided themselves on is gone with these releases. Had this been the first song I listened to from them. I don't think I'd have given them a second thought and brushed them off.

San

Even though I am not into the English songs from BTS and the fact that they are not written and composed by them (except RM writing rap parts for Butter) - I still like the vibe and the message they carry in songs like these. Also those hits are necessary for them to shine all around the world, get radio points and MAYBE Grammy. HYBE and BH chose a great strategy to eventually conquer Grammy and find even more new audience. In the end, when time comes we'll get a full Korean album with new meanings and thoughts. I am positive about the whole thing.

👆🏽 all this

Stop the autotune!! Ahhhhhhhh!

Have you watched BTS interview with Jaeki Choo.. amazon music ? that interview was genuine. PS: not a fan of BTS all English songs, but ARMY with all my heart.

PTD had to grow on me after streaming it for 24hours and also watching other reactions for me to understand that this song may not sound like BTS but moreso a song that sounds like one that would be up for a Grammy. I think BTS and HYBE put a lot of thought into releasing such a song with the goal of being nominated for a Grammy and a much bigger chance of winning.

I particularly don't care for Sheeran music. He needs to not get involved with BTS music. They are a global group that deserves better. PTD is a happy song which BTS can use in a musical. They have the visuals and dancing ability to pull off a broadway musical.

LE

I also wonder if HYBE is not only targeting the US market, but the international market in general. Dynamite and Butter are enormous hits in Japan and broke streaming records, and really broke them out as well in India and Europe. Korea also seems to really like Dynamite and Butter if the charts are anything to go by.

Emika

I really enjoyed PTD and I'm really looking forward to their live performance on Jimmy Fallon this week. To be honest, some of the discourse surrounding BTS and English songs has been annoying me online. I 100% respect your opinion if someone says they don't prefer the style of their English songs, but it's the thinkpieces about BTS betraying their Korean identity or whatever that really annoys me. In the same year they released Dynamite, PTD, and Butter, BTS has released two Korean albums (MOTS:7 and BE), D-2 mixtape, 3 new Japanese songs (Stay Gold, Film Out, Your Eyes Tell, and a new Japanese album), not to mention songs and collabs such as Don't, Bicycle, Christmas Love, Blue Side, Snow Flower, Abyss, Savage Love, Blueberry Eyes, Sweet Night, Winter Flower, and Still With You. It's completely untrue BTS is only doing English pop songs now, and I really don't understand why that is the major opinion I see on places like reddit.

Emika

For PTD, I liked the video and choreo more than the song itself. To me, it feels more like an Ed Sheeran song than a BTS song and I'm just not into Ed Sheeran's musical style. I think this is similar to Dynamite in that while it can be catchy and "easy to listen to" (or watch in case of MVs), lyrically they don't sound like BTS. Fans can tell they weren't as involved in the writing process. Butter did a better job of including more of BTS's individual vocal colors (I'm guessing RM's involvement helped A LOT in that respect) and it clicked better for me. That said, a surprising number of people online seem to gloss over the fact that BTS has had Korean and Japanese releases between the English releases. I'm not worried that the more casual English boyband pop will be their main style going forward. They're all still growing and exploring their own musical styles (excited for the next round of mixtapes!).

KitKat

I enjoyed Permission to Dance - it made me happy just listening to it. Is it a masterpiece like BST or Dope or Dionysius or Awake or Daechwita? It's not. But it was fun to listen as boy band du jour material tends to be. I'm Ok with thinking of BTS as a boy or guy band - albeit a truly extraordinary one that has broken the limitations of that box. So if they want to present a summer bop that just tells you go ahead and enjoy life I say why not. If BTS wants to break into the mainstream Western market, this could be what that market wants. And like any other business, which is trying to appeal to a new demographic, they run the risk of alienating their current market.

Regards to All

PTD is not my favorite. I will still support them. I am probably going to get hate for this but Dynamite, Butter and PTD sound similar to each other. Songs like these I can not listen to over and over again or I will get sick of it. I learned my lesson with Dynamite. I streamed it for 24 hours and for weeks after I could not stand to listen to the song. BTS is my favorite Kpop group so I try my best but PTD right after Butter is just too much for me. I honestly like Butter better then PTD.

I adore BTS, but PTD sounds like bland Disney Channel music and is inferior material for them. The autotune was shockingly bad, too.  I'm getting worried they are taking bad advice from the West who don't really "get" them and just want them to be like your typical boy band when they are actually legitimate artists.  But for some positivity, the message was nice and it was inclusive.
