Hey guys, In regards to Park Nae Rae having “ Hey Jini” - a content creator whose main demographic is children as co-host for a show with sexually explicit content - was probably not the smartest move lol. Content like that works best if the other parties involved are not totally off brand. Maybe netizens would have been less outraged if the other guests/co-host had a similar image to Park Nae Rae - known for being for provocative etc. I guess the fear was that children who are fans of “Hey Jini” would also tune into that show as well. I watched her Netflix special and it also featured similar themes and was pretty raunchy I’m curious if that received any pushback in Korea? In regards to snowdrop there have been many films US films where history was distorted and that upset audiences. Case in point was a film feathering Mark Wahlberg where he played a heroic firefighter during 9/11 - it was based on a true story and the actual firefighter in real life was black! Don’t need to tell you how people felt about that (it diminished the integrity of the story and also at chipped always at the prospect of representation). Thankfully things are a a lot better now in terms of representation but at the time it was truly a slap in the face by Hollywood. Historical integrity is important - you might not be able to get everything right but audiences have a right to call out instances where it’s being totally distorted, especially when the story centres on traumatic events.

Sending love to DKDK since fans can't differentiate between stan culture and respecting history and trauma. As a Kpop fan it's important to support but also RESPECT! Being a Kpop fan doesn't make you an expert on Korean culture and history. If the drama is triggering negative trauma to Korean's that has nothing to do with being a Blackpink anti, it has to do with respecting a culture and a history which is way way more important than any drama. This coming from a Blackpink stan btw 💕

I missed it 😞 I was gonna ask about how Mr. Queen is also affected by the cancel culture happening in kdramas

Jan Tristan

This was the first I heard of Snowdrop, but I understand national trauma.

Laura

I'm reading a book called Everything Belongs to Us and it takes place in 1970's Korea. So I understand why people are so upset. Also, my great uncle served in the Korean War and he came home deeply effected by what he witnessed there. So very horrible and tragic.

Park Na Rae can do what she wants. But like all people wanting to be on a stage, she should consider her audience. Decline sometimes. Your no makes your yes more powerful, and respectful.

Sarah Padbury

I dunno...with the amount of outrage it may be very hard to alter the show enough to satisfy the public at this point after the premise got leaked.

Hi guys

SamanthaC

ughh this snowdrop issue is so upsetting. I feel like everyone was rooting for the success of this drama because of the cast and big following, but after hearing your explanation and the very sensitive topic I understand the outrage. The best outcome would be for the cast to apply the adequate changes so that the drama respects the history and sensitivity of the topic even though that would probably require an almost complete re-do and probably double the budget. So many people had high expectations and looking forward to this series, I hope they can deliver this while still give justice to the historical context. Also, unrelated quick question, do you think BRAVEGIRLS will be only a onetime hit wonder or do you see them achieving longevity in the Kpop scene? + since we're in CancelCulture topic, just read that SEVENTEEN will appear on Ellen and ughhh pls no. In the US, Ellen has been canceled since last year bc of all the harassment and misconduct allegations, and the real lack of accountability and responsibility from Ellen and her team. Makes me sad to see such talented groups promoting on her show, thinking she's still all that

For the diss track, I thought it was very disrespectful to put someone's real funeral with real people crying and if they did their research they would know how much pain that day brought all kpop fans. Furthermore, it is very hypocritical how ppl from the west who mostly knows "the dark side of kpop" is acting like their own industry isn't as dark or even darker. Look how many people have died from drug overdose and even suicide. How many of their child stars have come out unstable etc. It really is annoying to see them act like they are in a position to judge especially those in the music industry. As for the show snow drop I only heard about itbut did not know there was a controversy around it. I totally agree with anything Korean fans find appropriate to do with this show because ik I would be pissed or even traumatized if I saw police being shown in a great light at BLM protests etc.

When I first heard about Snow Drop being cancelled, I was like 'what's wrong with people? why are they so quick to judge when the show has not even aired yet." ... but after hearing the historical context I now completely understand. The synopsis sounds too close to the real life event. and it would be triggering for people who lived through those moments. Also, it sound likes it is moment of pride for the nation as well. Despite all of the struggle, people protested against a powerful government and the people won. It shouldn't be taken lightly. I also agree with David, a lot of people consume history thru media and social media. That is just a fact. It's way more engaging than sitting thru a boring lectures... We don't want people in the society having a tainted picture of history. Especially a significant event like this. Normally I would say 'let's watch the show and then judge', but this one I feel like need to be modified to prevent retraumatizing people who lived thru these events and their families and also misrepresenting an important time in history. I was really looking forward to this drama bc of JHI. I feel bad for Jisoo. I wonder if there is anything that can be done to fix the show.

Leni

I don’t think Park Na Rae’s actions should considered sexual harassment. She is making a joke and it wasn’t pointed at anyone or at anyone else’s expense. however, if she wants to continue with this “push the boundary” comedy she should expect more reactions like this. As for Jisoo’s drama after you explaining the context I see why Koreans are upset. Rewriting history like this is not ok.

Eri

My thoughts on cancelling Jisoo's Kdrama: It's always best to treat others the way they want to be treated so if this subject is too traumatizing for Korean people, then preventing further trauma by canceling the show would be the most humanly kind and respectful thing to do.
