Patreon AMA - June 25 2023

Hey, it's time for another AMA. It's summer again! and that brings with it a lot of heat and sweat and general tired-ness. But I'm on holiday from "politics" so I finally have all the time in the world so I don't mind it.

I'm looking forward to any and all questions you might have today as well as some from the archive of stuff I just wanna rant about. So it'll be a fun hour!

You can ask me questions in chat, on my patreon or on my curiouscat: https://curiouscat.me/MiaMulder

I'll do my best to answer any and all I can, so ask away! All questions are okay.

Live today 20.00 CEST

Edit: Whoops, this was supposed to be restricted to 5 dollar patrons and up, but I beefed it and now it's open to all patrons and I feel bad about restricting something that got emailed out to everyone. Sorry folks, but hey, now everyone can join!

In dramatizing the transition from republic to empire as the triumph of evil, does Revenge of the Sith reinforce historical narratives about ancient Rome and the United States? Does it prompt us to draw a clear line between a virtuous early stage and a decadent later stage in societies that had been oppressive and expansionist since their origins?

Could you please respond to the observations made by Rick Perlstein about the cultural significance of Star Wars in his book Reaganland: America’s Right Turn? Do you see Perlstein’s reading of Star Wars as contradictory to your own, or can your perspectives be reconciled? Perlstein cites the success of Star Wars as a sign that Americans had come to desire optimistic and morally simplistic stories. He contextualizes it as a continuation of the trend that saw Rocky win Best Picture, beating more serious films like Taxi Driver and All the President’s Men. He quotes Pauline Kael’s review of Star Wars: “The excitement of the those who call it the film of the year goes way past nostalgia to the feeling that now is the time to return to childhood.” Persltein concludes “Star Wars was a Ronald Reagan sort of film.”
