SLIGHTLY EARLY ACCESS: BYAMPOD Ep 102 - Happiness is The Road Part 1

Sorry again that this is late. Should be some bonus stuff coming later this week. And a Writer's Club pod coming for some of you imminently.

We start an epic look at Marillion's 15th album, Happiness Is The Road, with an analysis of the album's launch - and the band's controversial decision to put it out for free on peer-to-peer sites ahead of the physical release. Noses were put out of joint... but did Marillion have any other choice, and were fans right to react as they did?

I'd be curious to hear from people who felt so aggrieved by the P2P decision - what was it they didn't like? I don't get it. I understand the strange value in buying and owning something, physical or otherwise, rather than downloading it. Having downloaded plenty over the years myself, I have found that much of it just sits there, unused. If I fork over money for it, you can be damn sure I'm going to use it (he says with a backlog of Wii games still sitting on the shelf). When Radiohead did something similar the year before with In Rainbows, there was a lot of media attention. From what I remember the fans were supportive. I didn't bother downloading at all and bought the physical for a tenner or whatever the shop was charging for it. Do torrent sites still exist? Most of the biggies have been shut down and it's more of a nuisance to try now when the legal alternatives are just as easy. But... let's just say there is a market out there for acquiring music through shady means and being able to put it on your phone or usb stick which can then be played in the car without the need for being online.

Thank you, Karl. We like having a routine, and we do treat all this like a job - we find the disruption stressful! Can't be avoided alas, but we should be back on a proper schedule this week.

Paul, please stop apologising 😀 I'm amazed we're getting anything from you, given what's happening in your lives. And your stuff is always worth waiting for. Personally, I'd rather you put stuff out when it feels right and sounds good - I don't feel like you have to deliver product every week (and I don't think of this as a relationship where I am a customer. I always look forward to listening to BYAMPOD. Best wishes to you both. Karl
