BYAMPOD EPISODE 88 - Somewhere Else: My Part In Its Downfall

Sorry this is late! We've got a bonus ep on the way to make it up to you.

We're finally at the point of talking about Somewhere Else - Marillion's 2007 follow-up to Marbles. It's an album that has something of a mixed legacy, and in this episode we argue that it's a record that deserves better than its reputation. We also explore where it might've gone so wrong - and why Paul may have had something to do with it.

Also, we check in with The Corona Diaries, and enjoy a review of the Montreal Marillion Weekend...!

In addition to the bonus episode, later this week we'll also have - for the £10 and up tiers - a new Writer's Club podcast, a blog post and entirely deleted ep for £5 and up... and - hopefully - Digi as usual. Also, there maaaaaay be a Biffo's Brain Zoom chat, but I'll let you know tomorrow or Weds.

BYAMPOD EPISODE 88 - Somewhere Else: My Part In Its Downfall

Playing catch up with the show so bit late with this buuuttttttt with regards to the FB poll for voting for songs. Here’s the thing. I have never seen the band live. But I will in November. So I voted for the songs I wanted to hear which just happened to be, mainly, the frequent songs. Songs like TSE, Neverland, Invisible Man, Gaza…. as those are my favs. So I guess the issue is that every gig could be someone’s first and maybe a deep cut from .com is too niche? I think, really, the Weekends should be set up so that at least one night is deep cuts and rarities. Get one of the band support team to set up a poll with the lowest played tracks from each album and those are the ones that are eligible for votes. The one/two with the most bites is in the set list. At PZ this would work well: album night, band “theme” night and voted rarities. Just some thoughts.

I am one of those that hasn't given Somewhere Else a chance. I think I was dissapointed that there wasn't a crowd fund and that the band didn't need me anymore which put a real damper on the albums release. I do like some of the songs and actually don't mind Most Toys but, in a similar way to Radiation, I can't get past the production. Having said that I'm more than willing to have my opinion of this album changed over the coming episodes. Shane xxx

That was really good of him! He's definitely a very easy feller to chat with. Thanks again for getting BYAMPOD a shout-out. We really appreciated it!

After listening to TCD 114 I did contact Ant Short to apologise for causing offence with my BYAMPOD TCD research comment on TCD 113. Ant phoned me up on Monday morning to assure me I hadn’t. That was a relief! It was very kind of Ant to call me and he is a lovely chap to talk to.

Citizen of Legoland

Hah! Yeah, probably.

Sex Octopus needs to return.

Paul Rose (Mr Biffo)

You're very welcome, Bill. Thank you for the lovely letter.

Paul Rose (Mr Biffo)

Great episode. Sex Octopus, Ian with the runs, and E Peeness had me in stitches.

Thanks for sharing my letter Paul. It really was an emotional experience for me. I live in New Brunswick now, on the Bay of Fundy (highest tides in the world, or so they say), and far from anyone who seems to be familiar with Marillion post- Kayleigh. I had even begun to lose touch with the band myself until Sounds came along. Corona Diaries and BYAMPOD were really my way of not only connecting with other like minds. The Weekend was that manifested on a grand scale, and while I am not certain I will ever be able to make the trip again, I am glad to have had those three nights, and to know that there are folks like you who care as passionately as I do. Your journey through the albums has helped me to fill in some blanks, and to make sense of why I went off Fish. Thanks again for all that you do.

Were the jokes that got removed from the press release about some dude removing his own scrotum? (hmmm... maybe thats what "The Wound" is really about!)

Pete Pyjamas

Really was!

Paul Rose (Mr Biffo)

What a lovely letter. Really nice description of the emotional impact of a MW.
