Dev Diary #1, Our Wars Have Ended

OK, the casting process for our next show has kicked off! But what does that mean? Let Jon attempt to explain the process, the ecstasy and the agony…

Flinging out the net

Open casting on the internet is a weird and deeply chaotic experience, and I’m not sure we’ll ever get it completely right...but it’s always a fun challenge to undergo and it's always ...

Our Wars Have Ended - casting call is live!

And the casting call for our next audiodrama production, Our Wars Have Ended, is live!

If you're a voice actor or you know voice actors, we'd be really grateful for your help in auditioning and / or spreading the word. A lot of the old social networks and communities we've used to find actors in the past have disintegrated or are, well, Twitter, so we're aware this might be a long and slow trawl to find our cast. We'll be patient and work hard at it. Wish us luck!

The Silt Verses Big Final QnA, Part Two

As 2024 ebbs into its final dusk, it's time for a few final words from the cast and crew of The Silt Verses.

In the second part of our ridiculously long QnA, big questions are tackled, shocking secrets about music-listening habits are revealed, and most importantly, the voice actors get so caught up in coming up with drag names that they recklessly promise to host and judge the official TSV Drag Revue.

The Silt Verses Big Final QnA, Part One

Hey, amazing folks! After finding that the Silt Verses final QnA was running at around 4 hours total (and nearly losing my mind trying to edit and transcribe it), we've made the sensible decision to split the session into two halves and release them separately.

Please enjoy the first half of the QnA, featuring Méabh de Brún as our amazing host, and answers from me, Muna, B. Narr, Lucille Valentine, Jimmie Yamaguchi, Sarah Griffin, and Marta da Silva (with a guest appearance from H.R. ...

Our Wars Have Ended, our project planning has begun

Hi, amazing people, hope you're having a great September!

Right now we're busy at work with - well, still newborn stuff, mostly (sleeping shifts, contact naps, more contact naps) but we've also been setting up the TSV Season 3 QnA which we'll be recording in mid-October, while I've been starting to look at possible audio reworks for certain S1 episodes and beginning to pick up the Silt Verses novelisation again.

In the meantime, I've just been starting to pull together the beginni...

The Silt Verses Episode Commentary: Chapter 45 (both parts)

Hey, wonderful people - I’m writing this in the early morning as our baby chills out in his crib! All three of us are doing good; life is good. Hope you’re all great as well. Let’s do one last TSV episode commentary.

Thank you so much.

Post-show

For a long while now I’ve been getting up at 4.30 or 5am, grabbing myself the first coffee of four, and then coming to sit at my desk. I open up the assembly cut of the newest TSV episode.

I listen to it, I try and pin down which scenes I need to be going back over today. I try and push through the entire morning without a break because when the momentum stalls, that’s what kills your release schedule. (I also worry endlessly about just how much o...

The Silt Verses, Chapter 45 Part I (early release)

Hi, wonderful people - please find your early release of Of Love, And Gods’ Defeat (part one), the first half of our two-part series finale, attached.

OK, we've both been working our asses off this week in the vainglorious hope of getting both parts of the finale complete for release today - and unfortunately, today has thoroughly kicked said asses when it came to polishing and finalising the last two-hour section, throwing up a bunch of fi...

The Silt Verses Chapter 44 - Episode Commentary

0:00

I spent a long time in the early planning stages of this season tearing out my hair over finale logistics - in particular, the question of how to efficiently get Hayward and Carpenter back to the White Gull and within touching distance of the other main characters after the crab nuke went off.

It’s tough, because you’ve spent three seasons establishing a geograp...

The end approacheth...and fast!

OK, wonderful people: just a quick update to confirm that we are going to stick with two weeks per release for the final two Silt Verses episodes rather than trying to cram this one into a week-and-a-half. (Chapter 44 is essentially done but I'd like a little more time with it to do the final polish.)

Which means Chapter 44 will be with you this coming Thursday 4th July (Wednesday 3rd for t...

The Silt Verses Episode Commentary - Chapter 43

There’s a really interesting debate that’s been playing out in the past few years about how TV writers and showrunners respond to visible audience speculation online, and how that can send them running in all of the wrong directions by trying to subvert or pre-empt it (everyone thinks the island is purgatory! Quick, come up with something else!) and create a weird sha...

The Silt Verses Chapter 43 (ad-free release)

Hi, folks - please find your ad-free episode of the Silt Verses Chapter 43 attached! It's a big one, clocking in at just under 80 minutes.

Huge apologies as well to our early release tiers - I ended up having to go back to a couple of the later scenes which I thought needed more work so couldn't get the episode up yesterday in a condition I was satisfied with (slow working with a big blister on my hand still!). I hope the episode is good enough to justify the extra time spent on it, but...

The Silt Verses Chapter 43 - 19th/20th July update

Hey, amazing people!

Just a note that the next Silt Verses episode will be coming in a few days late, for what are slightly ridiculous dog-ate-my-homework reasons (Jon burnt his hand on an oven dish and hasn't been able to complete sound design on the last couple of scenes through his dressing! He's absolutely fine otherwise.)

We'll expect to release the early tier this coming Wednesday and the full public episode on Thursday. (We'll wait and see if that'll have a knock-on effect ...

The Silt Verses episode commentary - Chapters 41 & 42

Of course I knew that there's a big difference between monologue and dialogue when it comes to recording time - but it still absolutely caught me by surprise that these two episodes (intended to be one episode!) had a script that’s only 49 pages, compared to the previous episodes that were running close to 60…and yet it came out twice as long.

So we split ‘em, which I think works ...

The Silt Verses Chapter 41 (early release)...er, again

Hi, amazing people!

So in our last post, I mentioned that we'd split this ultra-long episode into two hour-long chapters, one focusing on Faulkner, Carpenter, Hayward and Shrue, and Val (which we already released a few days early) - and the other focused on Paige, which you'll find in your feeds and attached to this post.

The two episodes take place pretty much simultaneously and have very little immediate bearing on each other, so they can be listened to in either order - but upo...

UPDATE (2.6.24): I mentioned a couple of days back that we'd split this ultra-long episode into two hour-long chapters, with one focusing on Faulkner, Carpenter, Hayward and Shrue, and Val (which we released a few days early), and the other focusing on Paige.

The two episodes take place pretty much simultaneously and have very little immediate bearing on each other, so they can be listened to in either order - but upon reflection, we decided that the story flows a little better with Pai...

The Silt Verses Chapter 40 - episode commentary

This felt like an important scene to have for Hayward as a character, looking up at his old childhood home.

Our other three protagonists have all got to have at least one episode focused on their childhood and their family and their past, and we obviously would be getting into really repetitive and time-consuming territory if we tried that yet again…<...

Silt Verses Chapter 39: episode commentary

This was an odd, broad, ambitious episode, and it didn’t come together quite as cohesively I would have liked it to (I feel like I say that a lot, but so it goes); we ended up actually recording during COP28, which certainly ended up feeling eerily thematically relevant.

A few weeks back I was coincidentally reading Doppelganger by Naomi Klein...

We always knew this was going to be a really difficult episode to pull together, and while there’s a lot I love about it, most obviously the two lead performances, I think probably overall it’s not quite where I wanted to get it to in the second half.

It made sense that Faulkner would at some point need to return to the moment he made his first sacrif...
