Action Button Update 08/30/2024

Hello! I thought I'd provide everyone an update on the status of Action Button video productions.

For those unwilling to read the fullness of this post, consider this paragraph the short version: work continues, full-time. I have not spent a weekday NOT working on these videos since my last post. Yes, I know that was almost two years ago. I am Getting Old so Almost Two Years goes by like that. Well, I work daily on six separate productions, which seeing as I do multiple jobs on each one feels like the most perfectly natural method for me. I feel bad about not providing you production updates or teasers or trailers or bonus features, though to be perfectly honest, I only feel bad about it when someone directly confronts me in one of my various inboxes. I consider the ongoing work The Best Work Of My Many Careers and experience incredible fulfillment every time I open a Premiere project and reckon with its wildness for a minute or so. I turned 45 in June and thus have been frequently throwing around the phrase "I am past the statistical midpoint of my life" during livestreams. However I somewhat recently had the miraculous opportunity to peruse the gravestones at my old family cemetery (???), which shockingly revealed to me that many of my ancestors both fought in World War ONE and died at age ninety-five, so maybe my cardiologist's joke about me living to a hundred and twenty is true, at which point I have for certain defrauded my livestream viewers. It seems my genetic destiny has doomed me to a supercentury of petty frustrations regarding mostly Adobe products. At any rate I recently have happened upon many occasions profound or not to reckon with my own mortality and in the middle of last year quite nonchalantly while typing up a lugubrious narration of an enemy encounter in one of my ten favorite video games of all time I fell down a rabbit hole of the realization that these reviews for the most part represent The Last Time In My Life I Will Ever Talk About This Exact Thing, where "This Exact Thing" of course varies from paragraph to paragraph. Ever since then I've neither cared nor tried to wash the philosophical stain off my ridiculous prose. I work happily and contentedly and feel good all day every day about every little creative-or-not decision I make, whether it be of a video or audio transition applied to a clip, a turn of phrase workshopped with ninety-six repetitions into a microphone, a piece of camera equipment bid for on eBay, a contractor paid, a studio booked, or a potential interview subject emailed. My working life overflows with the joy of perfect control. I wake up every day knowing exactly what to do, and I end every task knowing of six others I can segue onto as my mood declares. Furthermore--and this is a question I get a LOT--no, I do not do freelance work. I am not a freelance consultant for video games. I stopped all that in 2020 when I launched my first video. This is 100% of my job. YouTube ad and Twitch subscriber revenue do not even together cover my apartment's monthly maintenance fee. Also, yes, I did get robbed last week while shooting on location, though I really wish I hadn't told anyone about it. I have done many weekly Friday livestreams during immensely stressful situations without disclosing any personal details. I guess I just couldn't hide it last week. Yes, I lost some valuable equipment and a week of shooting, though we're filming it again next week and it'll go better and cost less money and look better. Please--and I can't believe I'm typing this--I'd really appreciate it if you stopped yelling at me because I got robbed. Yes, I shouldn't have told you, though also: please, and also: come on, man. Yes, the robbery is the main reason I am in a weird enough mental state to write this post right now and I won't gauchely pretend otherwise. Finally, please join the Action Button Discord. It's located at discord.gg/actionbutton. If you connect your Discord and your Patreon accounts you gain access to the backers-only "Fukubukuro" room, where I tend to hang out all day. Also, I do weekly livestreams on twitch.tv/ActionButton. I do these purely for fun, as a way to unwind from a backpainful / neckpainful week of work. However sometimes I use the Discord Fukubukuro chat as the stream chat--allowing me to create a sort of a Patreon Backers Only Chat stream. I will be doing one of those TONIGHT at 7pm Eastern, so get on in there!

Well, that's the end of the Short Version. Let's make some kind of a long version:

FIRST: I LOVE MY COMMUNITY

I don't use the word "love" lightly. So many of you were so nice and encouraging to me when I (stupidly, gauchely) confessed to having been robbed in broad daylight at high noon while traveling. I'll talk more about the robbery later in this post, though for now I just want to thank everyone who reached out with support. It means so much more than even a word-typer of my prolificacy can adequately communicate. Everybody get in Discord Dot GG Slash Action Button please.

"There is No Money in these videos I make except for yours." I keep saying--and meaning--this during my livestreams, though let's put it down here as well for posterity: there is no money in these videos I make except for yours. YouTube's algorithm doesn't exactly like my sort of channel; I have said no to every sponsor who has approached me; heck, I can't imagine a sponsor who'd agree to my terms if I did like them enough to present them my terms. I am making huge, wild things over here and I prefer to keep them secret from you until I release them and I love every one of you who understands and respects that aspect of this thing!

Also, I sincerely apologize for how much I am going to wind up talking about money in this post. Let me clarify up front: money as of right now is good. It is sufficient. Please realize that I am producing, on average, nine hours of video content for the cost of sixteen minutes of The Daily Show. (Yes, I did the math.) I don't mean to brag here. I wouldn't compare myself to Tarkovsky or Orson Welles or anyone extremely impressive, though I don't mind going for Jon Stewart. You haven't even seen me in a suit (yet (unless you were by some chance at the Long Island Retro Gaming Expo earlier this month. Yes, that was Me In A Suit)). We can revisit the discussion of seeing me in a suit in a couple months. For now, let's (once again) talk broadly about my ongoing video production work.

WORK CONTINUES

With "Action Button Reviews Tokimeki Memorial" I figured out what kinds of videos I want to make; with "Action Button Reviews Boku No Natsuyasumi" I made one of the videos I want to make. Now I'm making a couple more of those and loving every stupid minute.

Here I must remind you that I wrote, shot, produced, and edited "Action Button Reviews The Last Of Us" and "Action Button Reviews Pac-Man" in twelve and sixteen days each, respectively, and anyone who likes either of those more than any of the others has not seen literally any of the others. The statute of limitations is up: they are bad. I'm sorry. I made them way too fast. I should have let myself cook.

I changed my Patreon description back around when I released the Boku No Natsuyasumi video to no longer hint at the promise of monthly or even regular videos. I will change it again when the next video launches, and it will be much, much shorter and hopefully more agreeable to everyone. I haven't composed a draft of its wording yet though I reckon it'll go something like "I make big videos about video games. You can watch them at youtube.com/actionbutton. If you like them, please help me make them. I will release bonus features relevant to each video after the video releases. However I formally subscribe to the David Lynch philosophy of Talking About The Film, in that I believe 'The Film Is The Talking'.""

(You may notice I stopped posting on Twitter at the end of 2021. That was not an accident. I got out before that new guy bought it! I never liked posting progress updates about my videos on there because the cool people were all fine waiting and any words aside from "video is uploaded" only made the angry people angrier. So, I will continue to only ever use Twitter to post links to my new videos as they release.)

I apologize for not updating you more often. It's just: I feel like a loser whenever I think about Patreon. I feel like a loser for having to ask people for their money. Yes, yes, I know I have stated that your money is all of my money, so yes, I feel bad about asking for all of my money.

I know that the VAST majority of you gladly give me your money and understand that these things take time and that I use the money carefully. Though it doesn't matter if there's nine hundred and ninety nine of you to every one angry person--I always look at the angry person. What can I say? My profession for the majority portion of my adult life has been "critic". I genuinely can't yell at myself too much for gravitating toward the negatives. Unless I decided to consider this tendency of mine a "negative" . . .

I feel like a loser when I think about Patreon because, well, I love the feeling of releasing a video, and the videos just aren't ready. I love putting a video out and knowing that you who watch it are about to experience a vast landscape of entertainment-surprises. I jam-pack these things, Carl. I don't want to give too much away, though perhaps you noticed the shot of me wearing a Batman T-shirt standing in front of Taco Tico in the Cyberpunk video. It's easy to recognize because I'm standing in front of a Taco Tico wearing a Batman T-shirt and I literally say "Taco Tico". That was a reference to the Boku no Natsuyasumi video, which as of the moment of editing that clip had about a year of production remaining. I am collecting dozens of moments like that into these next six videos. In fact, there already might be two dozen such moments in the Boku No Natsuyasumi video.

This is all to say: the videos are as beautiful as they aren't ready yet. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've woken up and thought, maybe I'll record a little video message to post on the Patreon. Then I start working, and then I realize it's time for dinner and then television while hugging my dog ("My Bedtime Boy"). It turns out Community Management is in fact a nuanced full-time job. I have sacrificed that specific rat's nest of tasks so that I can focus on all other aspects of production. I'm sorry about that, though I hope you'll love the final product when it's done as much as I do while working on it.

THE MONEY

Most comments I receive regarding my job concern my money. In all sincerity, I hate this. I wish we could talk about the work itself, cinematography, editing techniques, or even video games. Though no, most people messaging me want to talk about money. They do so either adversarially or sincerely. They either chide me for making so much money yet not releasing a video, or ask me how THEY can ALSO rise in status to a point where THEY can ALSO make so much money yet not release a video. I don't really have a simple answer for either of these types of people, though seeing as "money" is Topic Number One in the woefully short list of things people want to talk to me about when they, for example, meet me by chance in Whole Foods, let's do it.

Patreon by default displays a dollar amount at the top of the creator's page. When I first started my Patreon, I wanted to turn that off. I felt conflicted. I didn't want to ever appear to be bragging about success. However, I had just left a unionized workplace that valued salary transparency, so I left it on.

It turns out, salary transparency is great among coworkers, though not so much on the internet, where literally no one else is actually your coworker. The daily comments quoting an exact dollar value of my YouTube videos were just relentless. I mentioned considering turning the dollar amount display off. The angry people did not like that idea! So I left it on. In the run up to the Boku no Natsuyasumi video's release, I turned it off. I do not regret the decision.

At its peak, my Patreon was making close to $20,000 a month. It had started to decline in the months before the Boku no Natsuyasumi video release. I decided to turn the display off because I received a message here on Patreon from--actually, let me just go ahead and call him The Worst Guy On Here--I received a message from The Worst Guy On Here quoting the decline in my Patreon dollar amount. He said, and I quote, "Looks like the nosedive has begun, Will. Sweet, sweet schadenfreude." Let's unpack that first sentence a bit: this man knows my first name is "William". I go by my middle name, which is a fairly normal thing for a human person named after his father to do, though this guy has decided it's evidence of criminal fraud and thus has adopted the habit of always using the shortened form of my legal first name. You have to try prettttty hard to "harass" a straight white college-educated American male, so I understand this is kindergarten stuff, though still, even the kindergarten version feels bad! This guy had been a $3 a month backer since the beginning--and he STILL IS. You can't make this stuff up. In summary: something about his tone bothered me. So I toggled the display off.

Anyway, a few days ago, one of the Top Four Worst Guys On Here left a comment saying that "a lowball estimate" of the budget of the next video sits at "500K". This is wildly wrong. I get all of this guy's (and yours!) Patreon comments delivered directly to my inbox, so I see them all, even when Patreon beefs its security and won't let me log in. I sometimes feel like replying directly, and then I consider it gauche to do so. So I stay my hand. This time, I gotta un-stay my hand: this young gentleman's usage of the word "lowball", borrowed perhaps from a close encounter with a film about a hip real-estate agent, represents the chilling exactness of the internet disease: his lowball is actually a ridiculous highball, yet his one-dollar word choice paints him an authority. Trust not, my friends, the One-Dollar Authority!

Know this: the Patreon dollar amount now sits at around half of where it was when I turned the number off. This does not bother me. Of course if it were more I'd be able to buy more equipment sooner, though I manage. I work happily and contentedly under the belief that my remaining supporters Understand And Trust The Process. I work sixty hours a week, which yes, is a lot more than I'd recommend you work for Someone Else, though it's a full full-time work-week less than I was working back when I wound up in the hospital. I haven't even been inside a hospital since I pared down my hours, except for the time I visited a friend who had just had a heart attack. I work seven days a week and I don't take days off, which is fine and not a complaint, because I own my business and am in complete creative control of meticulously making things I like which concern things I like. So the blurry gradient between hobby and profession give unto this situation a Work-Life Balance lost of a little granularity. I choose to look past it and keep on truckin.

I have faith that when I start releasing these videos, and their massive packages of bonus features (mild spoiler: one of the videos has Over One Hundred Hours of bonus features, lol), something similar to a "backing" will arise. When my first ten-million-view video arrives (Action Button Season Three Episode Three), I'll likely have enough money to continue doing some variety of This until I die (75 years from now, yes). In the meanwhile I will continue saying no to every potential sponsor (buddy, there have been So Many at this point) and appreciating the god darn heck out of every single one of the dollars you give me. So please don't go away! Partially because I got robbed and need to re-buy some equipment, yes, though let's not make that specifically The Reason. I won't if you don't. Just stick around. If anything, let this factoid entice you: up until now, I have only reviewed games that I either did not know or did not particularly love. Starting from the video after this next video, I will only ever review my absolute favorite games of all time. The video after the next video concerns, for example, a game I have played more than two thousand hours of in the last twenty years. So these things are about to get wacky.

A BRIEF INTERLUDE

Let me pause for a second to shout out the guy who backed for twenty dollars a month and then messaged me asking why I hadn't included backer shoutouts at the end of the Cyberpunk video. I knew someone would ask about this, so I had a response prepared. I asked him if he ordered a Truck Heck T-shirt. He said "I am not giving you more money if you already haven't given me what you agreed to give me". So I said, OK, I'll send you a free T-shirt. Tell me your T-shirt size and your address. He told me to die in a fire (or something to that effect) and un-backed. It's been coming up on three years, so I consider the statute of limitations lifted: that guy's name was on the back of the Truck Heck T-shirt, in a meticulously typographed grid with other top-tier backers facsimulating the racers's names on the back of the 6th Annual Hav-A-Tampa Shoot-Out T-shirt I talked about in the Cyberpunk video. Oh, well. I'll try being less tricky with such guys next time. Though only slightly less tricky.

MORE ABOUT THE MONEY

People sometimes demand full cost breakdowns. I am not going to give you that because that feels like a line-crossing. If One Thousand Patreon Backers sign a letter demanding that, I'll consider paying my Moneybag Lawyer to write a guest post. Though he will probably tell me he advises against that, and dude: that right there is a guy I listen to.

Let me try to give you a ballpark, though. Like I said, the Patreon is down to about half of our friendly commenter's "lowball". Okay. So, I pay taxes. That's scarily close to half of my money out the window by default to pay for cute little diapers to put on hospital bombs. Oh well! Also, I pay my contractors. I have a strict rule to pay at the very least exactly double what I would've made in the same number of hours making videos for A Website. Don't ask where this rule came from (hint: it has something to do with a meeting I had with a guy minutes before filing my resignation). I pay a director of photography to film the on-camera segments. I had to scrap one of these whole shoots because of a change in creative direction (which wound up vastly benefiting the production), so I ended up paying twice. I pay Action Button Discord Pro and YouTuber In His Own Right OniSpumoni a monthly check to compose recaps that I run at the beginning of my livestreams! I have paid Action Button Discord Maven-Emeritus Golok to operate a teleprompter for fifteen consecutive hours, and I will do it again (soon). I have to pay to rent green-screen studios. I have to pay to shoot at some locations. This stuff adds up.

When I made YouTube Videos at A Website, I made a LOT less money than I do now. I know there are people in New York who live on less than I made there, and I feel sorry for them, though I can still admit that it wasn't a lot of money. I gave most of that money to a dentist whom I still visit and a landlord who later withheld my Six-Months'-Rent (!!) security deposit because he pretended to not know we were moving out, when he absolutely totally did and I have all the receipts.

Yet you know what? Life was easy with that low-paying job. Because that website's office had a full professional TV studio inside it, replete with cameras and microphones and lights and backdrops and guys whose full-time job it was to stand around looking more bored than literally anyone I have ever stood within a hundred feet of in my life while I read insane things off a teleprompter. (You would not believe the look on the guy's face when I did my Death Stranding review desk interludes all in one ultra-fast take. His impatience fueled my speed.)

They also had a sound booth there. Yes, that was the original "Goblin Bunker".

These days, I have to source my own equipment and rent my own studios. I have to own my own lenses and microphones. I have to buy my own airplane tickets (to E3s that do not exist). In other words, please do not consider the Patreon Dollar Amount my "salary". As the Business Owner, yes, I cut a "salary" out of that, with which I buy eggs and underwear. Though the rest of that I have to trickily balance as a "budget". I recorded about twelve hours of voiceover in a studio in Manhattan over the course of 2023 at a studio that charged me $260 an hour. Anyone who's ever tried reading a sentence written by me out loud knows it takes at least six run-throughs to master all of the surprises even with extensive rehearsals. As myself, I have a two-repetition advantage, so it only takes me about four. Though still, multiply twelve by four and then consult the embarrassing number earlier in this paragraph and press your ear against the window and you might hear my Chase bank account weeping. It turns out talking into a Neumann U87 Microphone is a little bit closer to playing the violin than the guitar. Real Audio Heads in the chat know what I mean.

I have talked about all of this exact stuff (okay maybe not the microphone stuff, though the "budget" stuff) in earlier posts. Though it's still a thing, and people still keep asking about it. So there it is.

In summary, when The Fourth-Worst Guy On Here expresses disbelief that a robbery of some of my equipment hurt me financially: guy's just straight up a hater. Please message me your PayPal information so I can completely refund you, and then leave.

Also, while I'm here: the marginally more agreeable guy who replied to him mentioning that my rental car was a Cadillac. First of all, dude, we do not live inside of Glengarry Glen Ross. Cadillacs are no longer Lamborghinis or BMWs. My camera trunk is enormous. I like being able to open it as it lays flat in the bed of an SUV as I drive it between cities, hotels, and remote locations. The camera trunk is so big that the thieves did not even bother with it--and probably wouldn't have bothered with it had, for example, I not been Standing Right There When They Robbed Me. It wouldn't have fit out of any of the windows.

At any rate, have you ever rented a car? You don't go in with a wad of money yelling for "Your Finest Vehicle, Sir, Chop Chop". The way it works is, you ask for a Type of car, and then they give you the worst one of that type while apologizing a lot. I went to Avis Dot Com. I reserved a "Compact SUV: Toyota Rav4 Or Similar". Yes, Cadillac makes an SUV that is not a murdered-out Escalade. It is one of the worst vehicles I have ever driven in my life and I sort of wish the thieves had just pipe-bombed it to spare it the auto glass repair guys's insults as they fix its windows. Cadillac makes a car whose only wish in life is to compete with the Toyota Rav4. The guy at Avis literally winced when he saw the name of the car in the computer. He was like, "Well, it's not a Rav4, though it should do ya." If you're a white man who teenagered in the 1990s and has quoted Ricky Roma most of your adult life, this may come as a blow, though here it is: even a 2022 Toyota Rav4 absolutely slays a 2023 Cadillac XT5, dude. Also, it costs the same to rent them. Just making that clear!

Does anybody else have any questions about how to rent a car!! I have rented a lllllotta cars, Rick!

FINALLY (?), ABOUT THE ROBBERY

The cop who showed up four hours late told me it's legally OK for me to call it I robbery, because I was

1. present

2. conscious

3. protesting

So, it was a robbery. They double parallel parked their 2020 white Buick Enclave next to my rented Cadillac X(treme)T(rashmobile)5. A dude jumped out, ran around the back, busted one window (with a sharpened, palm-mounted spark plug, research tells me), then another while I screamed like an idiot who had seen too many people (one) get iPhones stolen by dudes who'd just jumped out of cars to NOT know that you shouldn't get physical with these guys because they might (ie, the one time I saw this, the guy did) have a gun. I'm sure he appreciated the luxuriously ample handles on my Peak Design Travel Backpack! I had just remarked moments earlier, "I should take this with us; it is, after all, so comfortable to carry literally everywhere". I had looked into the window and saw it laying face-down on the floor of the car, its rear handle pointing up, ready for easy hoisting. Of all the sponsors I've ever said no to, Peak Design has never asked, though I'd've actually considered it. Heck, maybe I'd even more consider it now.

Anyway, I don't want to talk about this any more. I tried to delay talking about it and then, well, here we are, arrived at the time to talk about it, and I don't want to. Maybe I will later.

FINALLY-FINALLY, ABOUT THE VIDEO

I cannot stress this enough: I shouldn't have bothered telling you about the robbery in my livestream. The impact to the video is minimal. In the moment I merely felt violated and victimized (etc etc etc) and let my Public Mask slip a little bit. I will try not to do it again! Seriously. I regret doing it because I have now endured a week of a million (actually just like twelve, though see my previous comments about focusing on negatives) people blaming me for losing my stuff and calling me a con-artist. I should have just eaten the loss in silence, and maybe turned it into Content for a future video.

Though now that it's out there, I have forced myself into having to update you about the next video: the video is safe. 99.9% of the work finished / produced on the video up until this point is perfectly safe at home on my ultra-secure server. I only lost a couple days of shooting that I'd done on location. We can go back and get it again. It'll be better, now that we know all the angles and setups, etc. The schedule has slipped a little bit, and my intended release window has shifted such that it now bumps up against travel plans for a shoot for another progress, though I can squeeze myself a littttttle bit just this once and we'll see how it goes. Chances are, given the cursedness of this particular one project--lotta reshoots on this one, man--it'll go spectacularly better the second time.

Though yeah. I mustn't let myself focus too much on the "it'll be better this next time", just as I mustn't focus on feeling hurt and victim-blaming myself. I took a couple days this week doing only the most menial, mechanical tasks among my worklog, to allow myself breathing room to feel something while lying on my back, between the angel-devil urge-dyad of silver-lining-seeking and feeling like an idjit. The grim phrase "a complicated day at the silver linings factory" struck me the morning after the robbery, as I looked out on a hotel pool that'd do Action Button Season Two Patron Saints Eiichi Ohtaki and Hiroshi Nagai proud. I almost tagged Nagai in my Instagram upload of that pool, and then figured, man, he must get a lot of that, so I cut him some slack.

All told, I lost my Sony A7SIII, my cheapest lens (serendipitously placed on there for a walking-around shot I wanted to get proximal to a specific historical landmark), my beautiful Macbook, and my DJI Osmo Pocket 3, on which Mimsy and I had vlogged various travels with the intention of filling the whole SD card with twelve hours of bonus features. I will not hurt your feelings by telling you how many hours remained on the card and how many hours tears-in-rained into shards (of lost time). What a phenomenal product that is, by the way. I will eventually get another one and get right back to vlogging with only a slight bittersweetness paid to the lost footy.

(I also lost my Peak Design backpack and Peak Design camera sling, my camera batteries, and two Tiffen filters (Variable ND and CPL))).

(And my passport. I gotta get a new passport.)

Mimsy lost her iPad Pro and her 2022 Macbook Pro. Her data thankfully is a lot more iCloudable than my shoot was. I feel bad that she lost these items on what was ostensibly a Work Trip for me, so I want to help her get new ones, and if you'd like to help out, just, I don't know. Stay backed on this Patreon? That's the most I'm comfortable asking for.

It feels gauche to set up some kind of fundraiser. I feel stupid for in my state of annoyance and shock suggesting I wanted to do that. It's just, that was all equipment I had accumulated slowly, over time. And I'd just done a week of exhausting work that I was realizing I have to now redo. Though I'll be fine biding my time and rebuying those things.

That's not the same case for Mimsy though. She is very close to finishing and releasing her video game for All Major Platforms (!!!) and really does not need this nonsense. I already gave her my own (much newer) iPad Pro and (much older) Macbook Pro so I need to just pump up the newness on that Macbook Pro. My concept is this: Mimsy and I are planning a T-shirt. We will release the T-Shirt and hopefully you will buy it and all proceeds will purchase Mimsy a new Macbook, until the Macbook is purchased, at which point the proceeds will purchase Mimsy a new iPad and give me my iPad back. I personally will just live the Macbookless PC-only life for a while to just let that particular loss snow itself over. Maybe I'll get a lower-spec Macbook Air before my Huge Trip next year. I don't know.

I'm just typin out loud here now.

Anyway, I'll tell you about this T-shirt when it's out. We wanna take our time and make sure it's good, since it's something we technically planned to release after the Next Video. Though I think it's fair to move it up a bit! If that doesn't sound fair to anyone here, let me know.

Man. It looks like this part "about the video" wound up also being about the robbery. Something tells me this topic has Stuck With Me. Maybe I can say something else about it. This thing has fully unspooled as-is, so we might as well embrace it. Rest assured my Actual Work is a lot tighter, I promise.

"A COMPLICATED COUPLE OF DAYS IN THE SILVER LININGS FACTORY"

I bought a new Sony A7SIII just the other day. Starting to feel more frugal than usual, I crawled Craigslist in search of an adequately yet not criminal-suspiciously discounted Sony A7SIII. Having just suffered a robbery of my previous camera and fully aware of the Facebook Marketplace of the robbery's locality, I realize that a lot of people who just joined Facebook four hours ago and look exactly like AI-generated supermodels have had a brother or a son die in a car accident recently. These people cannot stand to look at their dead brother or dead son's Sony A7-series camera, so they are letting it go for the charitable price of a hundred and twenty or a hundred and thirty dollars. I found one beautiful AI-generated Brazilian bikini model who joined Facebook in July who had lost both a brother to whom she had recently gifted a Sony A7iv and a son to whom she had recently gifted an A7R, one in a car accident and one to an unspecified illness, within twelve hours of another. I feel immensely sorry for her loss, and I wonder if proximity to such tragedy might also inspire me to not Google a $4,000 camera before trying to sell it for $150. Well, I went to Craigslist. Good old Craigslist, full of people I can meet in real life in burstulously populated public places. I found an A7SIII for $2,250--well below the MSRP of $3,200. Apparently brand-new, in-box. I knew few thieves had occasion to also obtain the box. So I arranged to meet this fellow, who struck a delightful tone in texts. He arrived at a busy intersection on the Upper East Side in a Silver Honda SUV, and he now salutations his texts "My Friend". He didn't even count the money, and he gave me a hug. He showed me a list of other gear he has back at his storage unit in Jersey City (Golok, let's go hang out with this guy) and told me I could have my pick. When I asked him why he was selling all that studio equipment so cheaply he said he had acquired it all during his long career as a documentary filmmaker, and he had no need of it as he was retiring. I congratulated him on his retirement, and he informed me that he is also terminally ill. The next person I told about the robbery listened patiently, expressed sympathy, and then told me an even worse story than the old documentary filmmaker. So I've never felt a worse "it could be worse" in maybe my whole life. Gauche indeed it feels to bemoan my moneyhole here during this complicated couple of days at the silver linings factory.

FINAL WORDS ABOUT THE VIDEO

I don't want to talk too much about the next video because I am aging into Santa Claus re: how much I love surprising you. I do not want to promise a release date or give you a single detail about its nature. However if I may speak nebulously, know this: I will never, ever make another one like this. Do not consider this a hollow threat: I have, in the past, said "the next video will be shorter", and we all have good laughs about that just about every day even today. It's a good joke and YouTubers are always right when they do it. I am not saying that the next video after this next one will be shorter, or that all the videos will be shorter from now on. I am saying that you will know when you see this . . . thing that it is something the likes of which nobody can make the exact same sort of thing twice without brain hemorrhage disaster. I will NEVER make another one Like This ever again. So please look forward to whatever that phraseology forebodes.

I genuinely actually promise you I will announce its release date here on this Patreon at least forty-eight hours before launch, and I will only compose that announcement when the video is confirmed as uploaded, processed, and copyright-issue-free on YouTube.

IN CLOSING

Shout out to Geno, who I ran into at a truck stop. Literally the most random Viewer Sighting I have ever experienced. Usually it's in a big city. The Highway is a new one for me. Also shout out to his friend Cole, for whom I recorded a Video Message.

I'd like to Give You More for you backer dollar, though like I've said, Community Management is a luxury I can't afford with the shoestring-Hollywood guerrilla production style I'm doing over here. I don't know what to give you. I can't think of anything that'd NOT compromise my video quality or that wouldn't just completely suck compared to the videos itself. Or that wouldn't make zero sense without a just-released video to give it context. Imagine the "Mimsy Illustrates The Pizza Karl Cartoon" bonus feature without the Boku no Natsuyasumi video. That makes sense, right?

So here's where I say: I've recorded a lot of podcast episodes the past two years. I just don't feel like the quality is extreme enough to paywall. Paywalling them feels gauche. So I've balked on releasing or even talking about them and now time has just silently unspooled on the back burner while I front-burner these ridiculous video troves. One podcast is called Action Button Monthly, in which me and a (secret) co-host discuss the video game news of the month two months before the month in which we record. The other podcast is Action Button One-on-One, in which I interview somebody. We have these just sitting around, and I'm not doing anything with them, because I keep thinking it'd be gauche (there's that word again) to release bonus features before a real video. Though maybe it's not. I don't know. The appeal of the "concept" of me and (secret) co-host discussing April 2023's Video Game News In June of 2023 released in [Month] of 202[5] is just very funny to me. I feel like it'd go a long way toward proving why I do things the way I do them. Though another part of me just wants to release this stuff now so that I have something to give you. Then I think of the guy who'd get mad that it's not enough, and et cetera et cetera et cetera. I promise I'll work it out. Also I promise I'll tell you later about the third podcast, which is even better. Suffice it to say this Customer Service thing is all a real pickle and a half.

So here's where I say I respect the heck out of anyone who watched Action Button Reviews [Video Game Name] and decided to monetarily encourage me to make lots (and lots (and too much)) more like it. I will continue putting your names onto T-shirts and bonus features when you least expect it. And if you ever feel the need to flex your generous dollar, just message me on Discord. I'm "actionbutton". Preface your message with "Q&A: " if you want me to read it out loud during a livestream. (You may even message them to me here on Patreon, though Discord really works better for me, I promise.) Then, just watch the beginnings of my livestreams--ie, the pre-vide-game part--and I'll try to address your questions. Also, I'll try to do at least one monthly Discord.GG/ActionButton #Fukubukuro Chat Only stream.

Twitch.tv archives streams for a couple of months. I archive them locally, too, and I'll upload em all to Action Button Channel Two on YouTube at some point around when the next video comes out (gotta clean off my server, etc). Though if you can't catch the show live, the archives do work pretty well.

Well, I'm just talkin here. I told myself I'd try to post this before 6pm on Friday so that you have an hour's notice about the livestream. Maybe I'm runnin a bit late. Might as well just post this. I hope you don't mind however many typos are in here. Well, bye for now.

Oh, wait, I almost forgot to explain the picture at the top of the post. Hmmm. You're probably tired from all this reading and not interested.

Oh, I also almost forgot (or did I just post this at the bottom to make it more visible?) to tell you to check out LowercaseJai's YouTube videos as well. Extremely good YouTube videos! You can also back them on Patreon.

Your videos have rekindled my long-dormant love of videogames and, now that I finally have a job, I'm glad and happy to finally be able to support your work. I don't even care about Discord, I just want to do my part to make sure your videos keep coming out, no matter how long it takes. Thank you for everything.

Felipe Januário de Oliveira

Okay, I just want to say: I was one of the people who unsubbed after over a year of no comms. But now that there's this post, I'm going to be the rare person who's subbed again. If you're going to bitch at someone for a lack of communication you need to be satisfied when you get that communication, and this is what I wanted. And I'm just going to state that because I feel like not enough people follow through with their convictions. The second I learned about this post, I subbed to read it. It satisfied me. I'll keep my sub on as long as it makes sense for my financial situation. Genuinely enjoy your content, wish you all the best. I knew I was going to resub when a video came out (And my financial situation isn't *fantastic* so it wasn't a dropping of a sub out of spite or whatever, just basic bookkeeping-- it's hard to keep a thing active when it's a question mark) but seeing this is good enough reason.

Kitsunelaine

Thank you Tim for teaching me how to not be a jerk. I’ll subscribe for decades if you post nothing

Adam Asher

I’m coming in late but thank you Tim for the post and for everything you share. For what it’s worth you made me less a jerk. I am recently subscribed and I will be so even if it takes

Adam Asher

You're always the greatest, Tim, I and many love your work profoundly. Take your needed time, super sorry for the robbery. Thank you for taking your time to do stuff! It's a good thing, not a bad thing. Big hugs!

Lorenzo

keep at it tim, no need to feel guilt over people's maniatic linking of money and Content, good shit takes time and money to make. keep the silence coming mate

Cai Barnett

Had to take a quick break cause times is tough, but happy to be back on the backer list and hopefully you get to stop explaining yourself - cause our contributions are of our free will and you don't owe us jack. This isn't an exchange I'm not buying your DVD - we are your patrons. It's in the title!

verdigris_and_rust

Hi tim, I'm back now. I'm sorry I had lost faith in your work. To tell you the truth, I was going through a hard time in my life and then lost faith in a few things. I'm in a better place now, and I think I of you to thank me for it, at least a little. Whether your videos are meticulously researched, gorgeously produced, generously filled with good/bad jokes, I know you're always putting your your heart into your work. I realized that it helped to pick me up a little when I need a little pickup. I look forward to your next video! Please don't overwork yourself again!

Megabyte01

Hi Tim. I’m a bit late commenting as I just now got around to reading this. I’ve backed you here for over two years now, and I intend to continue as long as you keep doing your thing. I love, love, your videos. I can’t usually catch the live streams or spend a lot of time on discord, though. Sorry to hear that you got robbed. Not as bad as your experience, but I got pickpocketed in Barcelona this summer and it was a really awful feeling. Good luck to you going forward.

Daniel Dupree

Very pleasing to hear from you again Tim. I had cancelled my pledge a couple of months ago, primarily due to the lack of updates, so I've turned those back on now. I understand the desire to keep as much of your powder dry as you can before each video, and that the videos you make are monstrous things, but nigh on two years of Patreon radio silence is too long. Pop in now and then, say hello, that's enough to keep the wheels turning. Not to mince words, but your videos (Tokimeki Memorial primarily) have genuinely altered my perspective on many things; games, art, life, memory, my own sense of self-worth. Just this last weekend I was in Berlin, and I did a thing, because I remembered something you said in your last video about how memory can never compare to lived experience. So I figured I'd best live that particular experience. So thanks. Just pick up the phone and call once in a while, mate.

jdhathrisen

However long it takes mate, it'll always be worth it. You've proven yourself already. To me your videos, writings and live streams have been invaluably entertaining. Keep on truckin'

McGuiness

There's nothing out there like your videos, so I am happy to pay consistently for them no matter how long they take. They're life and art all in one, and never cease to make me feel something and contemplate my own life experiences. Your dedication to your vision is inspiring. There's plenty of people like me out here, so keep trying to ignore the haters.

Andrew Verras

Hey Tim :) Yay for the update! I fell off a long time ago but man I’m so glad to read your words and hear about your work and process. Sorry to hear about the robbery. Sending good vibes man!

Joe Perez

Hey I just wanna say I hope you're having a nice week :)

RecursiveFault

A few months ago, after hearing I was “still subscribed to the action button patreon” my roommate and close friend questioned my decision. “You’re subscribing for videos, where’s the video” he asked. I don’t care, it’s gonna be a sick video Tim— I might hate it (lets be real I wont) but it could take a decade and that would be a good 120 dollars spent— actually better than good, I think I need to up my dono now that I’m actually working.

Bennett Hermanoff

subscribed to read this you're a once in a generation writer tim, take yr time!!

Tom

Hey, man. Sorry to hear about the robbery and I'm just glad you're okay. You've brought my girlfriend and me a lot of joy and I trust you and your process 100%. Take all the time you need and take care.

RavenRaconteur

also: those fukubukuro videos of you playing random playstation games (and others) were incredibly fun and showed me so many games i had no clue existed.

Tyragor

i am 100% certain he does not mind people unsubbing, just people who are weird about it.

Tyragor

a) sorry about the psychos. b) we can all look back at the older and newer videos and, yeah, come on. you improve at things as you do them more. but you at least said some things in those videos that i still turn over in my mind and i think that's cool and important to do when you make shit for the world. they are not bad, is my point but i totally say the same shit about anything i've done longer than a month ago so i get it. c) sorry you got robbed, that shit sucks. i would have been terrified and i am glad you're okay! sorry you have to like, put on a face for insane weirdos about this. i'm sure you get parasocial concern at least as much as you get insane dweebs being a jerk to you because they saw you on the internet but I hope you manage to talk to someone about that whole incident. the worlds a fuck for a lot of people, but it was particularly bad for you that day and that's not something you really ought to be apologizing for. also i really want to make an earthbound video some day so if you could hold off on that one i'd appreciate it, thaaaanks

Tyragor

hell yeah brother keep on keepin' on

bedsores

Ignoring the latest setbacks, I really think you’ve turned a corner with your last two productions, and to erroneously borrow a term from poker: it’s easy to see why you’ve been in the tank so long producing the next season. Looking forward to the hard work coming to fruition. From where I’m sitting I truly believe it’ll be the best thing you’ve put out into the world yet

Patrick

Stranger

I wish I could contribute more monetarily to your video productions.. I'm terribly sorry about the robbery, the way it's impacted your production and mental state. Your work is incredibly inspiring. I would go as far to say that you have produced some of the best projects in this video-game review space I've ever seen. I cannot emphasise how much I love your work, and the impact that it's had on me. I will be diligently waiting for the next video :D

Joseph Iyamu

I've only rewatched videos you made quickly a couple times. The ones you clearly put in a lot of time and effort into them, I've rewatched them an embarrassing amount of times. You gotta let him cook people.

Amy Lewis

I sadly can't afford to monthly contribute as much as I used to because of The Doctors and other increased payments to the landlord that is Life, but finding my name on the back of the Truck Heck T-shirt was one of the great surprise joys of my past few years.

Still in the process of reading this update, but just wanted to throw in a Glad You’re Okay, and wish you luck with recouping all the lost equipment. This is like if The Godfather’s raw footage was stolen but in the video game way smh

Nygile Oliver

cool cool. thanks for the update.

Zach M

Holy heck, some people in here are truly delusional. Foster Wallace, David Lynch?

unlg

The type of guy to pay a subscription to be able to make someone else's life senselessly worse. Bravo

Patrick

I gotta say the way you write is straight up delightful, I hope it doesn't damage your ego to much to say that my respect for your work sits next to David Lynch, Bo Burnham, and David Foster Wallace (I don't read much so I hope this is a compliment. (I also thought your boku no natsuyasumi video reminded me of Norwegian Wood but I think that's just cause it's aesthetically linked to your experiences in Japan)). Also please play AND talk about your experience experiencing Outer Wilds (Talking about it is the most important part!).

Luke Davis

The email telling me there'd been an update from you might be the most exciting message I've had this year! And my life isn't That un-exciting! Keen to see whatever you're making whenever you're happy that they're done 👍 That vivid detail and iconic cadence and surprising twists of trajectory and the rest

Omar HBore

Steve Wyshywaniuk

I'm here because I love your work! (Calling it content just doesn't feel sufficient). I want to keep you able to create full time! Sorry to hear about the recent hitch, but hopefully soon things will be back running smoothly, and glad nobody got hurt!

Jason Ruvinsky

Always appreciate your frankness and eloquence, Tim. Cheers to you and yours.

Cheers for the update, I'm sure the next video is going to be great! I'd also just like to share with everyone here that I played OutRun for the first time the other day and that game is a blast!

Connor Colledge

If there's going to be a 48hr announcement prior to the next video perhaps I will gather my other Tim-fan mates and make a little movie night of it 🍿

Snookeroo

Mr. Connor, let's keep a civil tongue.

unlg

I can't wait for you to continue calling this a scam despite being given an offer to be fully refunded. But you won't take that offer, will you? You'd much rather stay here and be bitter than go out into the world and do something with yourself.

Connor Colledge

Thank you for dipping into uncomfortable territory in order to update us on your work. I've filmed things professionally and then lost or wiped footage without backing it up and it's a rush of regret that floods my brain as I think back on time lost. For some silver-linings, I can see some Prime Content potential in meta-textually folding in your robbery and Facebook Marketplace scouting into the narrative of this LA Noire video itself! Your hundreds of hours of research and writing and thinking about detective techniques can be applied and scrutinised autobiographically. I'm picturing the POV handbook pages flicking as you write down "I lost my son and can't stand to see his A7iii".

Shaun Spark

Happy to wait as long as it takes for what you make. I know you don't want pity but still it sucks to hear about what happened. But importantly you mentioned you were having trouble logging into patreon. I'm assuming youd have worked this out already but it seems to be blocking VPN traffic now which is a pain. Or at least requiring 20 verification screens if you are using a VPN.

Sammy3D

Thanks for the update Tim. Really sorry to hear about the robbery, they do really suck and feel bad no mater what. My truck was broken into for the first time of my life recently and amusingly, among other, thankfully inconsequential, items they stole my Bedtime Island t-shirt. Very excited for your work to come through When It's Ready and for Mimsy's game soon :-)

aline

Lmao!

unlg

Trust the process.

Bernard Shapiro

tim, your videos are awesome. keep making cool shit and i’ll sling you a few bucks a month. those dollars support a palpably awesome and passionate thing and i’m glad they do. interested to see whatever shirt you guys have cooked up for the macbook fund

adrifatw

I'm really sorry you got robbed. I'm glad you didn't get hurt and I'm extra sorry people made you feel bad for sharing that it happened to you. I don't envy any amount internet celebrity. Someone gives you one expensive sandwich's worth of money and feel entitled to tell you how to live your life. Deranged antisocial behavior. Happy to hear that you're loving the work and will wait patiently to see the extraordinary results.

Jenna H

Have you considered changing your diaper?

William Hartnett

Thanks for the update Tim. I know that writing these things is not the focus of what you do, but I sure appreciate them, if for no other reason than to luxuriate in your writing. It's a good time

Big Honk

yes!

foglabs

I’m still cool with waiting. I respect your process.

Matthew Wright

We will wait patiently, excited for whatever this next video is.

Hutch Hyde

sorry to hear about the robbery, if it makes you feel any better this was a great read. keep doing what you do! myself, and I imagine many others, support here for what you've already given us - it's not about what we'll get in return. take all the time in the world, we know it's worth the wait.

Craig Bonder

i get wanting more status updates & communication, but i dont understand feeling thaaaaat entitled over $3/month over a year or two when you've provided so much luxurious content for free. i *sort-of* get it for the higher tiers, but even then, the solution is pretty simple & obvious (unsub, or if you really feel that way, ask for a refund.) ive decided a subscription wasnt worth it & moved on plenty of times. and just personally, i would never pledge more to a patreon than i could live with "losing," just because of the fraught nature of independant creation & my being someone who lives in this roulette-wheel-of-fate-ass country ("Don't let yourself subscribe to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner.") i heard a podcast discuss a fairly recent sociological idea called "anti-fandom" a few years back (as in, people bonding over mutually hating someone, usually an internet figure of some kind.) it really does feel like people have an emotional need for someone they can revel in feeling righteous compared to, whether they actually are malevolent/harmful or just annoy them. ive seen it both for people i like and people i also think suck, and it's troubling. not that someone cant reasonably take issue with you, but someone *revelling* in it does seem weird & like there's something interpersonally icky & kinda sus going on inside them but yeah, you're good. dont wanna be tooooo parasocially mawkish at you, but i hope stuff chills out for you soon, & i look forward to the next videos

Kite

Dude.

Giovanni Lupo

Glad to hear things are (kinda?) okay! Please take care of yourself, whatever that means to you!

RiceInTheMech

Reading through this just makes me feel good about being a part of the community, even though I’m not the most active. Just upped my membership 👍🏻

kunekune

Take as long as you need Tim! Your videos are always so great and I'm happy to wait!

Joe Horton

Recently researchers concluded a repeat trial of the famous “Stanford Marshmallow Experiments”, in which children were given a marshmallow, and the option to wait an hour an additional marshmallow. The original study found that children who waited for the additional marshmallow had better executive functioning skills in adulthood. These follow-up studies found no such correlation. The new results are far more logical. Marshmallows are not worth a 15 minute wait. A raw, unfurnished marshmallow? Gross. We’re not waiting for marshmallows here. I’m more than happy to contribute to these productions, and wait whatever time it takes. You do incredible work, and everyone here recognizes that - even the worst people on here. I appreciate you recognizing the gap in community management in this update. I do think there is room for improvement there. Patreon income declining means that there is an opportunity for increasing patron retention between videos. A dedicated community manager could work on this, and may end up paying for themselves. In any case, thanks for the update. I’ll be looking forward to the next video!

Owen Sanders

I love your videos, Tim. I'm glad you're enjoying making them!

Jack Collins

that final fantasy 2 review is gonna be so good dude

Baddamn

Classic Tim. "You know why I didn't update you before? Play-victim." "I apologize for not updating you more often. It's just: I feel like a loser whenever I think about Patreon." You are 45, dude. Stop guilt-tripping your followers with your "yeah I fucked up, but I'm the real victim here". Just do better.

unlg

Tim, I'm sorry that some people on here are such entitled pricks. I (and most people here) absolutely trust you 100% to make awesome things, in good time. So sorry to hear about the robbery, that's awful. Excited to see and hear all this stuff in good time! Take care

When I was growing up, I didn't want to think about anything besides video games. Today, it feels like an act of love and understanding to that young person to support you and your body of work. I'm so grateful that I'm alive to see your cleverness unfold.

DolphinHands

Tim, it's always nice reading more of your writing, even under less than ideal circumstances. It's sad when people lose patience, demand immediate gratification, and then go complete bozo bonko when they aren't met with apologetic subservience... but everyone has their own whims and desires and we can't please everyone all the time. I implore you to continue your work on your videos as you have planned and not let this setback cloud your mind. It'll all be good when it's finally in the hood. And RE: the podcasts, I suggest either low-key releasing what you have now for free, or just shelving it and moving on. The thing with podcasts is they are often topical and need to be released and consumed within a certain window of time to remain relevant and interesting. Other than myself (being a true goblin), I don't know who in 2025 will be listening to a podcast discussing hot gaming news from 2024. But yeah, good on you for helping Mimsy out as well. I'll continue to support yous guys, and I look forward to your best work ever!

Shuri Coon

I was jobless for the past year and a half. After getting my life back up again, the first thing i did when i received my new job's paycheck was becoming a patreon of Action Button, Summoning Salt and Insert Credit Again. All of you are my favourite part of the internet and helped me a lot throught tough times, so i'm happy i can give a little push again. I'm sorry for the haters, they can go chew paper bags for all i care. Hope you stay strong, Tim! You're a cool person. Cheers from Brazil

Marx

I haven't finished the post yet, but I feel compelled to say that given the turbulence of the last few years I imagine i am not the only person who left the patreon due to a personal change in financial straits and can only hope that in the coming years more (like me) will be migrating back. Can't rush greatness and I'm only more excited than ever to see what comes next.

Thanks for being a genuine inspiration and also being super cool to meet in person. Thanks for saving me from that security guard and standing outside in the lousy Smarch weather humoring our overexcited chatter for like 3 hours. I wish I could pledge more, but if you still need [name of program redacted] editing assistance I would be more than happy to help out. Try not to feel bad about having a Genuine Human Experience or that it was a mistake to talk about it, even if it was one. I said some dumb shit on camera at a live event last week too. No one yelled at me for it, and I doubt anyone cared, so the stakes were relatively low. But, you know, the feeling remains. In solidarity~

Claire Steele

So glad to hear from you! Less for an update on any future video and more of an update on how you're doing. I'm also nearing or past the halfway point of life, and I also grew up mostly computer illiterate compared to my peers. So I know not of Discord or streams. I go to work and come home to change my MS riddled father's diaper. THE DREAM! But I'm honestly a happy person and also a person that canceled their PS Plus when the price went up. So I have some bonus money that I can put towards upping to 20 a month here. So that's done. I enjoy reading fun words in fun orders, so if you get a chance to send an extra email here and there, it'd be appreciated. If not, I'll be fine! Just glad to hear from you again after the incident-I-wasn't-aware-of-that-shall-not-be-named. I hope you're doing well.

Adam Johnson

You’re rad and I’m dang proud to support this awesome production.

Upped to 50 for a bit. Can’t count the times I have returned to your bokunatsu and tokimemo videos. It’s gotten to the point where my girlfriend has been Pavlovian trained to fall asleep to your videos. Looking forward to your next video. I know the longer it takes means the more times I get to rewatch my favorite videos. Keep it up king

" I went to Avis Dot Com. I reserved a 'Compact SUV: Toyota Rav4 Or Similar'." I literally did the same thing for a trip to Atlanta and got a Cadillac from AVIS. Just having an Amazon Prime account gives you their upper tier or something. I just needed a Toyota...

Thanks for the update, Tim! I decided to double my pledge for the foreseeable future. I'm sorry about the recent losses, so hopefully that helps a little. Looking forward to whatever, but I'd also just like to say that you've already given me, personally, so much that I'm quite happy just considering it repayment. Your videos have made me cry on at least two occasions that I remember. I do tend to say that "I cry at everything", but in this case it's a definite compliment!

Matthew VanDevander

I can't wait. People who want videos any other Youtuber could make should go watch those other Youtubers instead. I'm here because I want Action Button reviews done the Action Button way. I'll wait ten years if I have to, gladly. Thank you for everything you do, Tim.

Otto Peyer

Nevermind, I’m a dingus and realized I can’t edit in a higher amount at highest tier (unless I’m just missing something, someone tell me if I’m wrong?), so instead I’ll just post about one of the vids on social to get the word out, cheers mate!

Up’ing my support! Thanks for everything, including the bits of nothing. The everything more than makes up for it.

Gabriel Kenney

I love your work and am so happy to help support what you do! Take your time, man. I'm just glad to know you're out there making the stuff. Cool things take time. I know it will be amazing when it's ready to release.

Jordan Stillman

so sorry you've had to deal with bullshit from so many things :( relieved to hear y'all weren't physically harmed during the robbery, but man. honestly shocked to hear strangers online would then decide to give you a hard time for it... how cruel! best of luck with the video, looking forward to it as always~

Irene Koh

Another voice in the crowd cheering you on mate! Much love and take care with the videos, I’m sure they’ll be great ^-^

Nominis300

Just re-upped from $3 to $5 after I cancelled most of my patreon subs a few weeks back to try and save a few bucks… had my own run in recently with sudden massive expenses falling out of the sky. I’ve also seen some of the bonkers attacks from people who have no concept of what the cost of the quality of product you put out is. Like… it’s $3 a month to someone who’s single handedly given you a dozen or so feature length films worth of stuff in the past 4 years and continues to do live streams weekly. Calm down or just opt out quietly people. Sheesh.

The violation of such an act is truly traumatizing, its psychological echo following you around and reflecting back when you least expect it. Months passed before I felt something like secure again. To be robbed is another thing altogether, and my heart goes out to you, Tim. Your Silver Linings Factory section was also deeply, deeply touching. Your work is utterly unique and endlessly rewarding and fascinating, and its value far outstrips whatever you're asking on Patreon. Good luck with Adobe Premiere and the proverbial Adobe Premiere that is Life's Tribulation.

Sean H. Campbell

I love reading anything you’ve written. Looking forward to what’s next, and I’m sorry you got robbed!

Thank you, Tim <3

Also I'd like to add that while I understand not standing by your earlier videos as much (you mention The Last Of Us and Pacman video) but I adore those too. If the Pacman video intro comes on while I am about to fall asleep I immediately become wired in. That intro is beautiful. And there are so many enjoyable moments from those videos too. Thanks for everything, Tim.

Charlotte and Virdal

Thank you for this, Tim. P.S. - I am beginning to think you have a complicated relationship with the concept of gaucheness.

TheOTrain

I really enjoy watching your videos and I’ll be seated for the next one. 😊

Eliza

Hey Tim. I want to say that I'm sorry. I had very recently (I don't know that I've even missed a full month yet actually) removed my backing because I was honestly a bit frustrated there hadn't been any update in so long. That really wasn't fair and I just had a weak moment there. I realize you don't know who I am and would never have known why I unbacked just to back again but I feel guilty. I feel guilty because even if you never put another video up on your channel, I have rewatched the content you have on the main channel over and over. You are genuinely a household name for my husband and I. If I have a bad day, we put on one of your videos. We quote our favorite lines at each other constantly. You have become part of the love language my husband and I share. The comfort and laughs you've brought me in what you've already have posted is worth me contributing as long as I'm able to whether you ever put up a video or not. My phone wallpaper is sunflowers with your quote from the Boku video, "I love everyone and you can too." as a reminder to be better. So I'm sorry for having a second of frustration there and thank you for sharing your content, it really has meant a lot.

Charlotte and Virdal

Dang proud to support this guy.

GSR314

I literally spend more on terrible gas station food in a day than I do in a month on this Patreon and your work has brought me tons of joy, so I will just say I am looking forward to buying this t-shirt and whenever Christmas comes.

Gordon Widener

Take your time, and do your thing big dog! Ima bump up my backing for sure. Just ignore the haters and keep on truckin’ brother

Thank you Tim

good to hear from you tim :) can’t wait to be welcomed back to video games once more

Semuprothe

Thanks for the update, Tim! Sorry to hear about the robbery - hope you're otherwise doing well.

Bill King

Take your time and care of yourself! Thank you for the update.

Francesco Rugerfred Sedda

Loved the post. My card got frauded a while back and I had to get a new one. Didn't realize that I forgot to update my card info until I saw a notification that we had a new post up. Good stuff man kinda what I expected had been going on recently. Your my favorite creator out there and it was great to read about how much you genuinely are enjoying yourself. It makes for an even better final product. Keep it up :)

Canis_Divinus

Great to hear from you, and yeah, doing stuff is hard and it takes time to keep doing that. As someone who makes film stuff for a living, it's a bit hard to hear you're still using Premiere, but then again I guess some people love finishing Elden Ring with a spork, so as long as you save often it's all good. Keep rocking in the free world, and doing your thing with integrity and zero compromises.

Emilio Bellu

what. an. update. bravo, youdaman

Elliott Trout

insanely love your content and will wait however is necessary. also thank you for the medium blogposts some years later which i found a couple of months ago, they surprisingly inspired me to write more and consistently from my forever painful burnout

Alexander Cherepanov

Appreciate the update, Tim ❤️ I'm certain what's coming up will be worth the wait.

DandyProphet

I'm adding "a complicated couple of days in the silver linings factory" to my lexicon. Thank you, Tim, glad to hear from you.

A.G. Aragon

Tim — thanks for everything and keep on keepin’ on! Can’t wait for the next video, whenever that may be!

Jacob Geiser

Just finished re-watching all the Action Button videos again for like the third time this year. I put them on while I work and they are great every time. Take your time, I wouldn't want a new video until it's ready. I know the (admittedly small) money I back you with is going towards something excellent that will entertaining me for years. Keep up the great work.

Duckyofalarcon

Thanks for the update, Tim Doggy Dog. Looking forward to all the bonus content.

Cam Lordi

you put great stuff out there, and i look forward to seeing what else you share for the remainder of your genetically-bolstered long life. take care, tim

Sounds exciting ~ take your time

Zachary Ryan

oh also sorry you got robbed. that incredibly sucks

mycophobia

as a content creator who's been pretty openly inspired by you, i continue to admire your work, how you speak of it and how boldly you approach the more Algorithmically Unfriendly aspects of doing this for a living. Thank you for the update.

Jeffiot

appreciate you and all the work you do Tim

funployee

thank you, <3. Take all of the time you need. I was mostly just worried about you until i discovered you were on twitch. I've loved all your videos (though theres two or there I'm waiting to complete the game first). The Bokononatsuyasumi video was deeply impactful to me. I watched the first half on a flight from the east cost to California, and the second half on the way home from a trip, that had me asking some serious questions about I wanted out of my life. I can chart my life before and after that trip, bookended by your video. Thank you for all given, and all you will give.

Kaye

hey ive watched one of lowercasejai's videos before. cool. i enjoyed reading this essay and am looking forward to new video. thank you time rogers

Tl:dr keep up the good work I've supported for a while now and have been happy the whole time. To me the videos are special but the weekly live stream is easily a quite fair exchange for my 3 dollars a month. (not even mentioning the 2nd YT channel) I'm trying to be more eloquent in my day to day life, and am trying to remain passionate about games. AB has helped with both immensely. I found myself 15 years into a level designers journey in AAA and losing motivation at times. All that time in front of screens and writing documents for people who will only engage with bullet points... I found myself less and less able to express myself justly and with panache. Around that time I started listening to IC and you released the 1st season of AB and I found a project who's work makes my life better in oh so many ways. 3 dollars a month for the boost that weekly stream gives me is a cut-price rate for something so great. I kind of have to force myself to keep playing "the competition"'s games - as research for work. I have many hobbies and practices I'd like to spend more time on. But as of now (I'm also 45)* Games are my career path and primary source of familial income. So I was happy to find that the AB analysis method, fluid and ever-changing though it may be, has really helped me keep my interest active and ongoing. It's not necessarily the videos themselves, though of course they are a delight. Instead it is the experience of hearing someone delve deep into a subject I'm very familiar with but in a way that requires and deserves real thought and carefully worded composition to produce. That is what inspires me regardless of the specific topic at hand. There is not a lot of that out there, inspiring video game discussion. Plus it is quite often super funny on top. And on twitch we see the eloquence form in real time which is probably the most directly inspiring bit of all. So here it is. And for 3$ a month and a couple of t-shirts? Thank you. Keep it up Tim! Good luck Mimsy! ❤️George

George 'Kid' Oldman

Thanks for the update Tim! Keep on keeping on

Jonathan Neel

That picture seems to be nearby where Alexander Graham Bell once had an office. I’d also like to express my undiminished excitement for your next release, buddy.

Lord Papula

as a long time backer I assure you that if I was looking for Patreon Rewards I would not be a long time backer

Shane Bonnell

Extremely down for a fundraiser t-shirt. My Girlfriend can personally attest to the promise of getting a better night’s sleep while wearing the Bedtime Island shirt! Sending you the best of wishes, Tim. I love surprise videos and I love surprise bonus features, so excited for what is next for the channel, whenever that might be. Speaking of bonus features, for all the brilliant, meticulous work you’ve put out over the years, I don’t think any YouTube clip has ever made me laugh more than your reaction to hearing the music of Imagine Dragons for the 1st time during one year of the interminable Game Awards. I think of it every time I hear their name.

Adam Williams

Thanks, Tim

I always love reading these big posts

Emo Seal

Been at $3 since the start, just bumped it to $20. And I'll buy that t-shirt, especially if it comes in black. Keep it truckin, man.

LLZeroX

Keep doing what you're doing, man. My sympathies to you and Mimsy. "A complicated couple of days at the silver linings factory" is a new all-timer in the stack-ranked list of Good As Hell Combinations of English Words.

The works you create have been so meaningful to me since the day I discovered them and I truly believe they have made (and continue to make) my life better. When I have a bad day and things feel unsure I can sink into any one of your videos like a warm blanket. I greatly appreciate this update and am really looking forward to what comes next, whenever you’re ready for us to see it. Thanks, Tim.

LA Knight challenging Ric Flair to a YEAHpapi strap match

As someone who has been robbed, I uh can't really fathom being so callous to someone about it. If people don't want to back action button anymore, they don't need to? I appreciate the update, Mr. Rogers, and wish you all the best with the next video. I remember when I was thinking "gosh it's been a minute since the last video." and then the Boku No Natsuyasumi video came out and I bawled my eyes out. I'm patient. Take all the time you require.

Arcturus

I'm very happy to continue supporting without extra community management stuff if it means that you can continue making videos and enjoy doing it. That being said, it's good to hear from you and I'm sorry about the robbery. I'm looking forward to the future videos!

Questant

Thanks for all the great videos, thus far, Tim. I won't tell you how to feel, but I want you to know your work is appreciated by me. The offhand jokes you've made over the years always make me smile when I think about them from time to time. I have no idea if you'll see this, but it felt more appropriate to write a comment here than a direct message.

James McLeod

I *will* purchase that T-shirt whenever it pops up :)

Mundane Pixels

Haven’t finished this yet but just wanted to say take as much time as you need. (Rewatched your Tokei Mokei review today, so good).

Funny_hat

(this was me sighing to myself as I decided to increase my pledge. Don’t mind me)

Melgna M.

I had considered asking you to record this as an audio posting since it was so long, until I realized that not only is your voice and writing style so distinctive that I had already heard it narrated in my head making the original request superfluous, but I also heard in my head the denial of said request. Continue doing the excellent work you do, regardless of the amount of time it takes. Thank you.

EpicallyFail

Fuck the freak weirdos who keep harassing you, take all the time you need, I will remain giddy with excitement for these videos for as long as they take to joyfully produce!

Mundane Pixels

Thanks for the update Tim and know that so many more of us are just so excited to see what you have in store next. Love having an update from you in any capacity and I did appreciate you being transparent about the robbery. Glad you’re both safe!

Aly

Thank you for the update Tim <3 much love

Man, I’m sorry people are being weird and jerk-ish to you. A seemingly unavoidable aspect of being on the internet, but still, absolutely sucky. I also am sorry about the incident which will not be discussed any further. I have been getting more into wearing nicer clothing, though I’m sure I’m still bad at it in many respects, by both you and the infamous menswear guy on twitter, and I have learned the value of a good T-shirt, and greatly enjoyed the Truck Heck shirt, so I am more than happy to purchase this promised upcoming shirt. For what little this amounts to, I have been referring to you for a good minute as “my current favorite non-fiction writer” and I am entirely mostly serious about this. Your work is tremendous and I am excited to one day be pleasantly surprised by the next video whenever it is ready. Also, I watched F for Fake because you mentioned it once, and I am now fully onboard the “Orson Welles was a genius” train. I’ve had some very stressful and odd last few years, and your work has been very meaningful to me, so thank you for that. I’ll now wrap this message up, because I’m supposed to be going into the store to buy cheese, but know that that’s how much I value your work that I have been sitting in a care in a Sam’s Club parking lot for almost 20 minutes because I wanted to read what you had to say. And also because I had to answer a couple of work texts, but primarily the former thing

Caleb Van Nice

You’re doing great, Tim, keep going!

Thanks for the update! I don't know, maybe I'm just stupid, but my partner and I treat your release days like little holidays. We get nice food and are totally transported by your narrative. It's great! So whenever the video comes out, it comes out. I welcome the surprise emotional vacation.
