I own a Gen1 /- V1 VFC STAG-15, or well it used to be V1. It was a mess, but V1's can be upgraded to current spec, the only difficult part, is that you have to cut out the original valve knocker housing to make space for the newer housing. V1 magazines can be upgraded from the original double feed double stack top to the V3 double stack single feed top and bolt hold open parts, for this you just need to print a new follower as the bolt hold open arm isn't placed in the same place between the V1 and V3 follower. Like you I also run the TM USP 9 (full size) with a Guarder alu slide and steel barrel combination, I have used it for 7 years now, and other than some leaking magazines haven't had any problems. Having been into this hobby since Systema was the way to go with gearbox parts, TM plastic AEG M4s was all over the place and Western arms pistols was top of the line, I can say time changes and airsoft manufactures do the same as you mentioned.
