Early & Ad Free: BIG Progress, Small Details...Building An Aluminum Catamaran Part 6

Happy Friday Friends!!! We're back with Part 6, can't believe we're so far into this series already! In this week's episode, we've got some suuuper interesting projects in store for you, including how we're able to weld the super skinny part at the front of the bow, putting in the under wing girders, and a very in depth discussion about our keel, what it does, why we chose this design, and of course we take you through the process of how it all came together in the build. What do you guys think about our decision to go with the fixed keel? Any die-hard daggerboard lovers out there? We've also got a pretty funny little segment in this one where we explore the intricate and sometimes inappropriate realm of Aussie Slang....we've got some goodies in there, but I feel like we will have to do this one again as there is just sooo much gold to be discovered πŸ˜‚ We hope you enjoy this one, and as always we are sending all our love and gratitude to each and every one of you!

Big hugs!

Just catching up on the boat build 2-6 and your update! WOW everything looks amazing! Delos 2.0 is going to be a cruising Beast!! Travel safely and as always enjoy the ride! Cheers!

How do you know if you have leaks before putting it in the water? AKA make sure no leaks in the weld.

Anthony Deaan

A big metal boat with ballast and probably all of the other stuff aboard will keep her low down. She will be a beast.

Emily

There is something I don't understand in general about catamarans, and it's bugging me. Looking at the flat area between the hulls, I am wondering about slipstream passing under, parallel to the hulls. Your design also includes a roof overhang holding Maggie aloft. What do you have to prevent a 50+ knot wind from lifting Delos 2.0? Adjustable airfoils bow + stern might serve you well in providing down force when needed.

William Flower

Woo hoo!!!

BTW- My first boat was a Catalina 22 with a very similiar setup. You could crank the keel right up into the boat, so more of a swing keel than a dagger board but the same principle. I know what you mean about it going sideways :)

Sailing SV Delos

Ahoy Mike- The draft to the bottom of the mini-keels is 1.2 meters, or about 3' 11". It's about 1/2 of the draft of Delos. We're hoping that a few people will show up but I 100% know that we'll be there. so see you soon :)

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Jerry- I still haven't 100% made a decision but there are a lot of factors that play into it. I can tell you though that for in mast furling to work you need a pretty flat sail, with very little draft (depth) to it so it can roll up properly on the furler. This means that you can't have horizontal battens, but vertical battens instead. We have this arrangement on Delos and it works quite well because she is a ketch rig and has quite a large foresail for power. But on the new design we don't have a mizzen and the mainsail is the driving force, so needs to be large and powerful. If we went with in mast furling, and therefore vertical battens, we'd lose anywhere from 30-15% of the main sail area as the leech really can't extend out due to the lack of support and shape provided by the battens. So really the only realistic choices for us are a boom furler, or a standard main sail and standard slab reefing with lazy jacks. The jury is still out on this one but I learn more every day :)

Hey Lowell, yeah that's it exactly with the keel! That sounds like a fun little racer set up too!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much JK, yeah we've been trying to mix in a little bit of everything to keep it fresh, glad you're digging it!

Sailing SV Delos

We've got plates everywhere πŸ˜‚

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much Ben & Suzanne, glad you're loving it!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much David! Really happy to hear you're enjoying the build vids...it's been so cool to put them together and share this experience!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Filip, yeah we've been imagining something like that too! We have a few parts missing from before we got there to set up the cameras and a few technical difficulties here and there, but I think when it's all said and done we will have the majority of it, will be an extremely cool video to put together!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Myra, glad you liked it we thought it was pretty fun haha

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks Frank, so glad you're enjoying the build series! Our 'Straylian is coming along nicely πŸ˜‚ We will need to do a part 2 of our Aussie Slang segment to show our improvement hahah

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Tony, yeah we've been imagining something like that too! We have a few parts missing from before we got there to set up the cameras and a few technical difficulties here and there, but I think when it's all said and done we will have the majority of it, will be an extremely cool video to put together!

Sailing SV Delos

Ooooo yes! Will be such an amazing feeling to have her out on the water!

Sailing SV Delos

An engineering marvel and the buildout is fascinating. Imagining Delos 2.0 cutting through the waves and a drone shot of the sunset gleaming off that shining aluminum.

Robert Palumbo

Hi What kind of furling will you have? Will you you in mast?

JerryUlmer

One thing you could create for Delos 2.0 is a time lapse of her creation from beginning to end that people could watch when they come on board…

Tony Gariepy

Love watching these build videos so exciting and so looking forward to your new world expeditions. Australian accents are so cool could listen to them all day and wondering how your guys' Australian accents are coming along !!!!

Frank

Love the new intro!!!!! And, as always, thanks for brightening up my Friday.

Myra Slepoy

Would be nice when boat is done do timelapse video from start to finishπŸ€— That is gonna be like awesome cheersπŸΎπŸ‘€

Filip Udovicic

These boatbuilding videos are totally fascinating. It's so interesting to hear you both talk about the design process, how and why you choose certain features over others, and to see what it means for the build process. And then to watch it come together, going from a sketch to a computer design to a real boat! And all the hard work and creativity involved in the shaping and welding, it's all so impressive.

David Levine

Just cannot get enough of these build videos!! So cool to see hot all coming together.

Ben & Suzanne Morrison

Earlier today I almost got stuck in the clay. But I said "No Way! It's SV Delos Friday and must get home to hit PLAY!" Yes, recently, it's not a matter of what's on your plate, but rather what's your plate on? Is it on the side, the bottom, or the top? And wherever it goes be careful to not let it drop. Oh, and I have a keel comment too. While air flows over a sail it creates a low pressure on the lee side of the sail. However, as the keel moves through the water a "low pressure" area is formed on the opposite side from the sail, so it wants to "pull" the boat to a more vertical position. As to the watermelon seed theory, I'll have to think about that. : - )

Scott C. Wise

Great Video. I had a hard time following the Aussie translations, but I am old. I would also like to hear more on the "watermelon pit squeeze principle" ......... that propels the boat forward. (Test little deviant to Feud's First Law of Opposition: "If you push something hard enough ... it WILL fall over". The bottom skids would seam to offer the entire hull extra protection from bottom strikes, and is a great idea .... especially loosing the pockets that would be needed to hold the lee boards. What is the actual draft? Hope to rub elbows at the patron party. Old Crew mates coming? Keep 'em flyin

Bonne Mike

These build vids are sooooo good! Great blend between entertaining and informational. Great to watch the Delos 2.0 being birthed! Thanks as always for brining us along on the journey!

JK

I used to race a 22' mini-tonner monohull with a daggerboard. When it was winched all the way up, the bottom of the daggerboard was flush with the bottom of the hull. One of the interesting things about having a daggerboard was that when we were sailing downwind, if I winched the daggerboard all the way up and pushed the rudder to turn the boat, the boat turned but it continued traveling in the same direction. It was a good illustration of how a keel works.
