The beginning to Steins;Gate is *definitely* confusing. The anime follows the VN really closely during the earlier parts, and I remember having to watch the first episode twice just to try to wrap my head around things. So don't worry about feeling confused. And yes, the names (especially place names) are really hard to remember, don't beat yourself up over it.
