hahahaha thank youuu Sam so much!

oh yes, it was nice ^_^ different approach but nice

Marian and Joy, and I mean the REAL Joy when I say Joy ;-), I really like and appreciate you two. For my money, your wrap up commentary is better than the actual movie. You should get your own Oscars for all your reactions and commentaries. And, by the way, I think your daughter would be touched by what you said about being her parents. Maybe one day you could let her view this reaction — give it as a gift to her! I look at some things obliquely… I was more caught up in the storytelling than trying to understand the story. I think I agree with Marian’s Matrix comments. In my mind this film owes a lot to The Matrix. I definitely get a Matrix vibe when watching it. I think this film, The Matrix films, Avatar, Squid Game, Endless Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Spirited Away (an Anime Film), Pulp Fiction, even Disney’s Tron films, each have their way of tapping into the Alice In Wonderland motif. They all dance around that motif using game playing, metamorphosis, and parallelizing reality within an unknown, yet somehow relatable, world with altered/shared consciousness, multiple universes/dimensions; basically any mechanism the storyteller wants to use to get us down a rabbit hole with an Alice-like character in a Wonderland-like arena. I think part of what makes this movie a “Best Picture” is that we audiences are at the point where we are more easily accepting nonlinear storytelling after decades of exposure to it (through films like The Matrix). If this film had been made a few years ago, when nonlinear storytelling was less abundant, I think it’s possible it wouldn’t have even gotten nominated. Although nonlinear story telling has been around for a while in cinema, it just wasn’t as mainstream as it has become today. Citizen Kane’s a good example of older nonlinear storytelling. Until recently nonlinear stories have been seen as “artsy”, “avant-garde”, “obscure”, “arcane”. etc. I see trends in today’s stories heading away from that perception. Modern, mainstream stories like Breaking Bad use nonlinear storytelling quite a bit, even all the way back to its pilot episode (first flying pants, then jumping all over the place in the timeline). El Camino and Better Call Saul go even more into this way of storytelling. Anyway, thanks for being the kind of reactors that give us a chance not only to see reactions to our requests, but to show reactions from your own personal picks. That’s a gift you give that I personally get a lot out of — the chance to see through the eyes of people I appreciate stories I would not have selected or known about left to my own devices.

I loved this movie. It threw ideas and concepts so incredibly fast at you, it was wild fun trying to keep up. But like some people think, even across different universes, your heart remains the same.

I admit when I first saw this movie, I was confused and the pacing, jumping around the multiverse turned me off initially. I just didn't get it. But so many people kept talking about this movie that I gave it another chance. So, I watched it again and read other people's review and I think what this movie comes down to basically is it is a family drama, particularly between mother and daughter, with a sci-fi action component as the storyline. It's sort of like how The Matrix delves into complex philosophical and religious concepts, like what is real, what is choice, is there free will or fate controlling all of us, but with lots of guns and kung-fu in virtual reality. If I can enjoy The Matrix, then I should be able to enjoy this movie, which I did once I saw it that way. I think you two saw a lot of the family dynamic and struggle, maybe because it was close to your own family life, and that is what struck you the most instead of all the crazy action and save the multiverse stuff (save your family relationship instead). Anyways, I get why some people don't like this movie or get all the hype, but I'm glad I gave it another chance and while it is not one of my favorite movies, I did enjoy it a lot more than I did at first. Good reaction and always enjoy your review discussion at the end.
