So it's no secret that I've been slowly working on a story concept/pilot with my beloved character (and fursona) Poppy! Poppy and the Dream Machine is still a work in progress, but I am currently enjoying what I have so far!
The main character is Poppy, she's a recent graduate, mid-20's gal who's still trying to figure herself out while living in a cramped NYC apartment. She does odd jobs to pay her rent. One day she answers an ad on a job board, applies, and forgets about it. Months later, she walks down the street and gets pushed into an unmarked car covered her face with a hood (the new yorkers don't care since it's not an unnatural thing to see).
It turns out she applied to be in a governmental program to do experimental stuff with psychosis, dreams, the unconscious. She starts questioning the ethics of how she got there, but Poppy quickly shuts up when she sees their offer of her entire year's worth of rent (plus more) to join the program. She happily accepts the job and is given a suit and helmet to explore and document everything in a giant "dream realm" that changes every time she re-enters it. Her helmet protects her from the Dream Realm entering her psyche because she was warned by the company affiliated with the program that if she takes off the helmet, there will be dire consequences to her mental state.
There she meets a cartoony-like entity that calls themself "Weather Boy" he acts all innocent and tries to befriend her, but Poppy is more weirded out than anything. Wb's facade lessens, and he tries to GET her. After a gigantic and dramatic chase where Poppy narrowly escapes with her life, her helmet cracks inside the realm! The recovery team does an intense check on Poppy and she's alright mentally, but her appearance changed dramatically! (she's now colorful, her current form) and she's asked if she wants to continue working for the program and offer her even more money. She, of course, accepts but is then tormented with dreams since she is still briefly connected to the dream realm.
If I go more into the series, I want to explore with her character what it's like being a lesbian, dealing with compulsory heterosexuality, standing out from the crowd, and dealing with how gender affects your perception from real life and your subconscious!
I hope you enjoyed this little snippet of lore! If you have any questions or would like to see/hear more about this, then feel free to DM me <3
