Okay guys, here is the first look at my next mockup. I'm calling it Lost Tropic; a sort of survival adventure game that takes place on a tropical island. While the graphics are isometric the game plays much like any top down action game with 8 directions of movement. There is no scrolling, as the world is made up of hundreds of interconnected landmasses like shown in the screenshot. Some areas are small and some areas fill the screen, but you always can see the whole area on one screen. This will allow me to make lots of unique detailed areas, which could be laid out in a procedural manner for maximum replay value.
I'm definitely taking some inspiration from the Zelda games, but I would play up the survival aspect. You must continuously hunt or forage for food or you will grow weak and die. Actions like running and excessive attacks will quickly deplete your hunger meter so you must calculate the risk before you decide to chase after lunch.
In addition to basic combat you will have to solve puzzles. Most of the puzzles are a matter of finding or creating the right item for the job. Furthermore, I would like to include some kind of simple combining mechanic to mix and create new items with your resources.
For the looks I've created a new custom palette with exceptionally vibrant colors. I'm actually trying out a new palette creation technique that works well for small refined palettes. I'm still tweaking the colors and technique, but will share with you soon. Normally I would never use an automatic gradient in pixel art, but in this case it makes a nice basic background, which the environment will always read well on. However, I will change the gradient colors depending on the foreground.
I hope you guys like it so far. I really want to make this one eventually! Stay tuned for more screenshots and design details!
