Triaging All the Horrible

OA1116 - We take stock a few days into the second Trump administration to consider the current state of ICE enforcement, Trump’s blatantly unlawful overrule of the recent Supreme Court decision forcing the divestiture of TikTok, and the President’s new venture in cryptocurrency. Finally, today’s footnote honors the efforts of one person who is doing her part to write history as it happens.

Agreed that the pardons are outrageous. I’m not arguing about that at all. My point was simply to say it’s been really disappointing to see some other media creators and Dems completely drop police reform and lionise the officers that served on J6. Officer Dunn and others that campaigned for Harris made a lot of us feel gross, similar but not equal to Harris wholeheartedly embracing the Cheney’s endorsements. Dunn now co-hosting with AG pushed some of us even further away. I’m really glad OA is back in your hands and back on track, and I think the new people are fabulous. Lydia saying ‘Doozy Watch’ makes me smile even with all the awful. And thank you, genuinely, for not licking fash boots and getting all starf*cky. Keep being yourselves bc y’all are wonderful.

To me, it is outrageous that Trump pardoned people who violently tormented and beat police officers in order to try to steal an election. There is zero sense in which it matters if those officers sucked or not.

Opening Arguments

If you are trying to get Matt to respond, try asking for input on a quote you're putting on your ankle... a footnote, if you will.

So if I get this tattoo on my left forearm, what's the right font? SHOULD INTERMITTENT VENGEANCE CAUSE AGAIN HIS RED RIGHT HAND TO PLAGUE US

You’re right, and I *did* forget to add that as fellow humans I definitely feel for them, as well as their families. Trauma affects a household, not an individual. But yes, definitely- there’s a balance. AG tipped so far in their favour I’ve withdrawn my Patreon support from all of her pods. I know I’m not the only one, and it bums me out.

There's also a difference between the Capitol Police and the MPDC. Most of the people affected were Capitol Police, whose only usual job is to defend the Capitol. The MPDC stepped in after a while, and many were subjected to violence, but most of what you talked about on the pod were Capitol Police who don't have anywhere near the same stain. MPDC has a much more harmful history with the local community, especially regarding policing of protests and arrests of vulnerable communities for non-violent crimes. The Capitol Police are generally just sitting there doing their jobs, and were in no way prepared to respond to the violent outburst on Jan 6.

I would defer to someone who is more actively involved in frontline activism for what they think about this, but just based on what i have seen in my own immigrant community i am still concerned that even a report that specific would end up being dessiminated for months/yrs to come as "ice hangs out outside the kroger." the long term trauma of associating your local grocery store with permanent exile from the us can be very high! The method you are describing seems to be the best possible one but i'm not sure i am the best person to answer this question really

Matt Cameron

Not sure that's a great thing either though... Why is so much of our population so disengaged from their own lives that they choose not to vote? Even if you don't want to be engaged in politics every day, the least you can do is show up once every few years to have some voice in your own future. I don't mean to shame people - i just think that there is something very wrong with our current system and politics that is causing this.

Shaking in my boots here at the level of Matt’s rage today!!! 😘 Thank you Thomas and Matt so f*ing much for giving all this information and energy to us. We appreciate you!!!

Status Quo Level Thing

Since you don't hear from the people not spreading misinformation I just wanted to let you know when the order to repeal sensitive place was issued one of my coworkers asked me what I thought it would mean I used what you taught me to tell them that ICE still has the same number of employees and they have priorities so it wasn't going to change anything right now.

No name

I will say that i did struggle a bit with reading judge berman jackson's entire order for that reason, but it is what she wanted to say and given the courage and moral clarity of the rest of what she is saying here i didn't think it would be right to redact her either. I share your general reservations about cops and dc cops in particular, but they are also human victims of this and i am particularly sympathetic to the suicides which followed jan 6 and think they need to be more included in the conversation. I do think that there is a way to acknowledge that they had a dangerous and impossible job that day against a violent mob without unnecessarily valorizing them though. It's not always an easy balance, as i don't want to heard as writing them and their very real trauma and injury off either.

Matt Cameron

Significantly less than 49% of the population voted for Trump. He received something like 35% of the vote. More people didn’t vote than voted for Trump. Not a mandate, not a landslide.

Gentlemen, fortnight is a song by Taylor swift. Did OA just come out as not being swifties? Ok seriously love the reality check. I feel like the reason dems are coming out in support of Trump stuff is to keep the peace and the only way to get things done. They can always ask for forgiveness later cause our side will take in anyone (see Liz Chaney)

I don’t comment very often, but I’d just like to quietly remind people that YES, the D.C. officers were attacked by the MAGA mob.. but please keep in mind how they treated BLM protestors. It’s been really gross to me how MSW Media/Dr Gill has thoroughly embraced the D.C. cops as heroes, licking the boots of cops. I know not everyone is ACAB, and of course I don’t want those rioters to go after people they already terrorised… but my greater sympathy lies with people like Jackson Reffitt, the son who turned in his father (and the father said he’d kill for that). For Rhodes’ ex-wife and children. People who testified to put those rioters in jail. Also, Matt? Can you bleed the air out of your radiator? It might clank less/exorcise the ghost. Keep up the great work guys. We need to evolve chameleon swivel-eyes to keep up with this firehose of bullshit.

I went to law school with monsters, including a kid in a national security law seminar who gave an end-of-semester presentation on how ICE would have deported all illegal immigrants on buses within days in 2008 if a Republican pres had been elected. It was, in part, student-graded and failed to mention law... lets just say this guy still wouldnt talk to me if we ran into each other today. More importantly: this threat of a law enforcement body capable of such wide-spread action has been touted in front of most of us for most of our natural lives. It's understandable to be scared and begin to believe it, but so important not to give them more power than they actually have.

Katie Herrmann

Matt, I have recently heard of the "SALUTE" method of reporting agitating activity (flavored like ICE these days). This outlines details to be reported, to help clarify real threats. This goes something like... S - Size/Strength ("There are three ICE agents...") A - Activity ("...stopping and asking for IDs...") L - Location ("...outside the Kroger...") U - Uniform/identifiers ("...wearing vests with POLICE across the back.") T - Time ("I saw them there five minutes ago.") E - Equipment ("They have firearms and zip tie handcuffs.") Do you think something like this actually helps improve reporting, or is this still going to result in misinformation?

Unlikable Internet Goblin

the repost on the OA subreddit about the fox-embed ICE roundup in east boston opened my eyes wide up to some of the dangerous fearmongering tactics.
