Elmer Rhodes did not lose his eye cleaning a gun. His ex has said he was off providing armed protection for a drug dealer friend of his, dropped the gun while waiting in the car, had a negligent discharge picking it up. The gun cleaning story is his post hoc cover, but there’s no reason to believe it.
