Plagiarism Video Update + Remastered First Half

The next video, "Plagiarism and You(Tube)" is EXCRUCIATINGLY close to done - we even have a name for it now! I'd love to show you the near-final draft, but I don't want to risk alerting the subjects before the video is public. So instead, now is the chance to show off how much a video develops as I work on it.
Linked above is the final version of the first 80 minutes. You'll notice a heck of a lot of changes, the main ones being:
- Tons of reshot live action segments
- Part 2 (Iilluminaughtii) is now part 3, because...
- An entire new part 2 has been made, a case study on the Cinemassacre plagiarism story!
- The Iilluminaughtii segment is also no longer horrifically long and painful, and is more focused, with tons of rewrites.
Somehow, this draft is 12 minutes shorter than the last one, but contains a ton more material. I don't even know how that happened. For people who already saw the first version, I hope seeing the difference between the two demonstrates the way my videos develop as I work on them. I'm infinitely thankful for having the chance to take the time to do this video right. I don't know how I'd have managed if I had to get this out on any normal timescale.
More content which couldn't make it in for time reasons is going in a separate video which will hopefully go up at the same time on a second channel, for people interested in knowing more. This will make it easier for viewers to understand some of the plagiarism and its effects without having to consult a 3 hour video.
The full thing is looking to hit the 3:20:00 mark, making it technically shorter than the longest video I've ever made, so I haven't broken my promise of making shorter videos!
We're in the process of finalizing all the visuals, redoing vocals for clarity, we commissioned some animations for a segment near the end because we thought it would add to the mood, and we're in the process of reaching out to the people who were plagiarised to give them a heads-up before the video goes live.
I want to apologise for how long this has taken, but FOR ONCE (and only once), it isn't entirely my fault. I think when the final video is done, you'll see why. I'd love to take the blame for the delay by saying "I underestimated how long it takes to properly document someone's plagiarism," but I couldn't possibly have known they'd have ripped off so many people. I'm just flabbergasted.

All these reveals are... disappointing, but not shocking. I have learned to not put anyone on a pedestral. It's a shame. What shocks me the most is honestly how extensive the plagiarism was (aside from the other mentioned issues) and how so little of it has come to light until now. I have been there in James' discord, about an hour to two after this video dropped. Plenty of the people there have seen the video and were already discussing it. James went silent, aside from a "Goodbye, everyone." post, minutes before actually nuking the server (and his twitter, it seems). What I can say with confidence from what I've seen here is that Nick Herrgott seems to genuinely not have known. His reaction seemed genuine - confused and upset over whatever was happening, blindsided by 'allegations he thought were cleared up a year ago'. He hasn't watched the video by then, and found it hard to believe there is anything new. In the only screenshot I saved, his response to me was "TRHIS [sic] IS MY JOB. OKAY? MY SOLE SOURCE OF INCOME./ I am a nonbinary, autistic, HIGHLY ANXIOUS individual who would otherwise be on disability were it not for this channel." As someone else in the server quoted, "it is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” - Upton Sinclair. (I just looked the quote up to give proper attribution. Sadly cannot look up anymore who posted the quote in the server.) I'm sure he will be forced to confront the truth sooner and later, particularly since there will likely be no more paycheck from James after all of this. Sadly, with James' discord server disappearing, so did Nick's potential support net. The guy surely needs some time to recover from this, but he deserves some support after all of this, as another victim of James' bs.

But oh well, the thing about plagiarism is that it's one of the only crimes where you're guaranteed to be caught. By its very nature, you're doing it because you want to create content as low-effort as possible, so why would you spend effort to hide it? Maybe these "creators" think they can whether the storm of controversy but they're still going emerge the other side unable to create content as "good" or as quickly as they did before.

Though, one really weird part about it is how sad it made me feel about making videos. I've had a small channel for over a decade, no more than 6k subscribers, just fun little tutorials and video essays that I make when I get bored. I didn't even think that if one of my videos was ever a "hit", someone might just copy its contents and pass it off as their own. I've definitely seen a few from bigger channels that veer surprisingly close to my concepts and code, though at least one cited me as a source.

But I remember that period of YouTube being better, more organic. Like people made stuff that seemed to come from a more authentic place. I miss those days. Anyway I really like the inclusion of Cinemassacre/AVGN not only because yay horror movies but I think it really demonstrates how even creators with talent and authenticity can have their souls claimed by Shang Tsu..I mean, capitalism. Important contrast to Miucin, who has neither of those qualities and as a lead up to Blair who uhhh…perhaps combined the absolute worst qualities of both. I guess Blair is at least a good judge of who to rip off, unlike those terrible jokes Newt repeated. Yikes. And to think now we have AI doing this in much more sophisticated ways than any one human can. Oh boy. I wanted to say that the good news is there’s so much bad info/poor quality stuff on the internet that any thief is doomed to regurgitate something even worse and surely that will be their downfall. IF people can recognize it as such. So it’s really good you’re making this, and I can’t wait to see the second half! And the second channel thing. I want to watch all the things.

Aaahhh halcyon days of being an academic.. I had this one undergraduate history student I used to teach. Of course students are paying for essay writing, copying bits etc because insure of English, time.poor, don't care. But this one was a decent researcher - he would write one good source analysis, did all the reading etc. Except for when he got to the research essay he would go and weave together some wiki pages. I caught him, he defended himself on the same base (writing anxiety, depression), he went before the academic board as it happened in his other units. Still did the exam even though he failed! The next year - returned to my class again. I told him I was watching and checking and he was all 'okay, cool!', and away we went. First essay (an analysis ofan unpublished source) was good, but the research essay? Sure he got better. At plagiarising. Apparently he spent the break refining his plagiarism - subtler cuts from wiki, grabbed some weird little known sites for 'poor writing' (yes he was STEALING HIS BAD GRAMMAR), etc. But still blindingly obvious coz it failed to address the question. When asked by me what on earth he was doing he said 'my dad has been sick, no time.' Except it was clear he took TIME to do the shitty plagiarism. It would have been quicker to write the essay from scratch. Just... 🤷🏻♀️

Not important at all, but here’s something that my pedantic, hyper-fixating brain just won’t let go of regarding the ‘you’re so closeted you’re having adventures in Narnia’ joke. You mentioned that this is a well-known joke from the Jimmy Carr stand-up special in 2007, but my first exposure to this joke was from the BBC sitcom "Gimme Gimme Gimme." The character Tom makes essentially the same joke in the final episode of series 2, “Sofa Man” (which aired in 2000), when he says: “I like the men in my life to be strong, to stand up for what they believe in. Not to be so far back in the closet they’re in f***ing Narnia!” I’m not saying that this is where “Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy” got his joke from, but I do think it would be deeply ironic if it was, given what you were saying in your video about plagiarists stealing from people who they consider to be ‘beneath them.’ "Gimme Gimme Gimme"’s writer, Jonathan Harvey, is a working-class man from Liverpool, and a member of the LGBTQIA+ community; in other words, no one would notice/care if one were to steal from him. (I say this as a queer, working-class woman who grew up near Liverpool myself.) Sorry for my ramblings, this was just living in my head rent-free, and now I can finally move on with my life!

It helps show her deliberate obfuscation; sure, content ID gets set off all the time for real transformative work, but any deliberate stepping around plagiarism protection shows some awareness in her that her work may not pass muster honestly.

If Harris didn't use any of her research to help him, then that's that, there's no reason to cite her. It wouldn't be true. She doesn't own the real life events, no matter how iconic I'm sure her coverage of them is and no matter how much the general public might associate her with those events at Cinemassacre.

2023-10-27 09:46:19 +0000 UTCas much as i loved some of the original jokes that were cut, holy crap were you not kidding about the new density of Stuff! made me recall the thing u said years ago about the magic of stripping things down. still, i think you could've left in a few of the smaller things. like the bit about the video filters? maybe ben shapiro will appear in the second half, who knows. as for what's out already - it's really good! the video already feels really complete - heck even each section. you could probably recut this single video into like an episodic series if you felt like it - and i think that repeated "here's a thing, and here's what we can learn and why it matters" structure really tickles my brain in the right way. i have absolutely no idea what could possibly make up the next 90 minutes of the video and i'm hella excited to find out completely nothing addendum but also quite like the extra gay stuff. the glove's great and idk how it'll look to the non terminally online but it's really funny in retrospect calling someone who lost all his hair from T T-less.

(Eg, change out a few words for synonyms and change the order a bit was seemingly enough for some of my classmates)

Honestly it’s a step down from those AI voices, and didn’t even clear the bar of soothing my ADHD while writing code. I know it's possible you didn't see it, but since you both cover very similar ground, it could be worth at least crediting her video? It would be ironic for your video on plagiarism to be accused of plagiarism itself, after all!

I used to write video game reviews (among other things) which were lauded by my friends and some YouTube commenters. I felt like I was plagiarizing simply by using turns of phrase, to the point that I gave up the whole effort for the feeling that I was either retreading old ground or utilizing too much of the feeling of another creators work. I must say that plagiarism as a concept and definition, is so much worse than I had expected or morally felt obligated to back then.

This is fire, and I'm so looking forward to the complete product, runtime be damned! Only two suggestions: first, "he didn't like I criticised right-wing Youtubers" is, I think, grammatically incorrect. I think it should be "he didn't like *that* I criticised right-wing Youtubers"; it just sounds really jarring without the "that". Secondly, I was a bit disappointed to see the lack of "I humiliated a guy so badly, he stammered out the most pathetic insult I've ever heard and then deleted the video" in this version. Like, you still mock him, as is appropriate, but I feel like you owned him much harder in the last draft, and that he deserves to be more owned than he is in this one.

One of the most illuminating parts your coverage of iilluminaughtii (hahah funny pun), was when she gave her definition of plagiarism. I teach social studies in secondary school and the number of times my students have either copy and pasted whole paragraphs or barely rewrite a source and submit it is astonishing. What’s more troubling is a lot do them think they are doing what they are supposed to be doing, that by changing a few words it magically becomes not plagiarism. They do not have a sense of the impact or the harm and frankly it is often hard for them to comprehend. I really can’t wait to see the finished product and maybe find some clips to show to my students.

I agree with the comments from some of the others about the twink joke not really landing (I kind of like the way you handled it in the previous draft more), and some of the direct iilluminaughtii attempts to hide the VICE logo and the shoddy research for the Stanford prison experiment being kept (which Kat mentioned is getting added back), but on the whole I think this flows better. Great work!

I like the spirit of the joke though, and I get where it comes from! Overall, I internalized more information in less time, so bravo!

Also, I think I understood why the Illuminaughtii part doesn’t quite sit right with me (still, I know). When that part starts it feels like the video was actually made as a way to dunk on that channel and not to explore the genuinely interesting topic of plagiarism on youtube. It’s probably because the rest of the 3h long (the work!!! I’m in awe) is missing so please take this note with a pinch of salt! Loved it overall and the double-voiceover of Blaire vs Deer is *chef’s kiss* but maybe you should have kept explicitly pointing out that the cadence was copied too.

My one sort of nitpicky note is that in the Filip section you make the same point twice in a row about how someone being discovered as a plagiarist is likely an indication that they’ve made a bunch of other plagiarized work that went unnoticed. Once at 7:04 and then again at 11:21. I definitely understand wanting to underline that point, but the proximity and similarity of those two lines stood out to me.

I get that it’s ironic, but we wouldn’t accept “it’s ironic” as an excuse for, say, Sargon to insult someone’s looks as a way to win an argument. I would pound my head on the desk until blood poured out trying to find a way to write about a subject I didn't know with any kind of originality and responsibility, and it actually broke me mentally. Someone like Blair is so deeply offensive to me, and to all the bloggers, editors, and creators I worked with over the years. This whole video is a horror show, and I'll be irrationally angry for weeks over this shit. Just utterly unreal. Thank god so many YouTubers have shifted to attacking grifters like this head on. It's desperately needed
