Climate Denial: A Measured Response

Hey you!

Here's the backer version of Climate Denial: A Measured Response. The next video is definitely absolutely no take-backs Night in the Woods next time. It was meant to be before this but I hit a stride with the research I was doing into this and couldn't stop.

Please find enclosed Zoe's goodbye horses cover. :D

Climate Denial: A Measured Response

Comments

I think it would be a great video topic, because it also allows for discussion of ableism and eugenics in medicine as well as medicine skeptics, a discussion I wish we saw more in leftist circles. It's not a two sided issue of science vs anti-science, but one far more complex.

dragontatoes

Thing is, anti-vaxx response would have to cover the same "why do people reject science" points mixed with the capitalist hellscape of lack of healthcare that makes people go "well I cant afford millions on chemo, time to try silver!".

Jeeyon Shim would be great for an interview. She doesn't focus on video games as much as creating LARPS that you can do by yourself or even with your dog. She teaches at a outdoor camp teaching survival skills through role play and you can find existing interviews with her on the podcast BACKSTORY ep 52

This makes me crave for an "Anti-vaxx: A Measured Response" video. Once someone starts to say "Cancer is actually a good thing" with a straight face (I wish I was making this up), we need a professional to handle this level of absurdity.

CaitSeith

I was really enjoying this video up to the point that you pretended to pour Nutella into your mouth and acted like you were actually eating it. Come on, we all have an intuitive sense of how viscous Nutella is and it would obviously not flow into your mouth that easily.

Sasha Rose Blatchley Hansen

re: trees needing CO2 - maybe if we stopped razing forests and jungles that would be important, but given that the amazon is being chopped down alarmingly fast and that deforestation elsewhere is countered with "n trees planted per y trees chopped" as if seeding new trees outweighs the older growth being destroyed.... comments about CO2 being necessary for trees is completely irrelevant

alexis

15 minutes into captioning the video and I'm annoyed that this is taking so long. :/

Valastrius

would love that when it's done lmao

alexis

Incredible work, very insightful!

Dave

The discord invite is expired :(

Mohmi

Yeah, this occurred to me too.

Dustin Morrill

I love this. One note: this will sound odd, but I know more than one person who absolutely will be triggered by dead dog jokes. That isn't to say not to do it so much as that it could probably use a content note of some sort that lets people decide if they want to deal with that. (I think it's hilarious and well-done.)

Jenlifer Fronester

If I'm not mistaken, drinking Roundup has been a common party trick for a long time. I'm pretty sure Australia (where I live) had a TV advertisement about it a long time ago. Otherwise, great video.

Evan Ritchie

You can totally track and paint/clone away the piece of drywall on your lip! And it's TOTALLY the effort for all bajillion shots just before the public deadline! Just go to BRILLIANT.ORG/Imactuallykidding for 25% off your first AfterEffects course

SadeN.moe

Each time I get a patron notification from you I get so anxious its the NiTW video, and then I feel a strange sense of guilt and relief when it's not. (I haven't played it yet lol)

Kobe Barkmeier

The Yooka-Laylee guys! You did a great video on that and it'd be interesting if you could talk to anyone involved!

Dagmar Makara

Yep yep yep, absolutely. I work in mental health and with people with experience of psychosis... we spent a lot of time in creative arts trying to come up with ideas that would sort of... simulate bits of it to give people an idea - Hellblade was an absolute game-changer for insight for people who haven't experienced psychosis.

Dagmar Makara

Kris Ligman seems like a good choice! The maker of "You Are Jeff Bezos"!

pinktech

ideas for podcast: Tomska, Lena raine, aurahack

so i'm less than 5 minutes into this but holy fuck the moment with you axing the wall after shapiro's "sell their houses and move" comment was so fucking perfect. that was literally the exact emotion i felt and then you described that emotion onscreen. poetic cinema.

Im gonna watch this with the pizza i just ordered, and im SO excited about the NitW video!!!

Eoin Thorpe

That bear's crotch bulge makes me profoundly uncomfortable . . . 10/10

Ken High

I think you might have been better served without the part on Round Up, which is a complex issue without nearly the scientific consensus that climate change has. All in all, though, nicely done.

There was a small error when you said Nutella was a 'sometimes food'.

Eben Sullivan

I almost spat my lunch all over my computer screen when the ax started coming through the wall. Now I need to make the "JUST ONE SMALL PROBLEM" gif for my internet arguments.

Andrew H

In terms of who to talk to: I would also jump on the Dia Lucina suggestion (they've got a really strong editorial voice) and would add any of the Easy Allies crew. Depending on your focus, you may want to try talking to What's Good Games (women who've been part of the industry for years) or a group like Girls Make Games who have created programs that help young girls get into gaming. Or maybe even Miguel Sternberg and Alina Sechkin who created "Russian Subway Dogs" especially since both came up in the Toronto dev community and still give back to it.

Liz Castro

I was confused about the title because I was sure you already had made a video about Climate Deniers; but I realized that one was about Flat Earthers. Great video. PS: Ha ha! Commercialism! PSS: Horses didn't exist in until Dark Souls 2; and that's why DS2 is bad.

CaitSeith

This'll be a nice chaser for today's The Daily podcast on the Trump administration's moves to curb climate science

Pete Asick

I’ve always wanted a cross over with you and Super Bunnyhop!!!

Evan

I need a 10 hour version of the horse song

Kathrine Iversen

I agree with the suggestions of Anita Sarkeesian and Jim Sterling as interviewees. I'd like to add WoodenPotatoes, a Guild Wars 2 YouTuber and streamer. He's a bit secretive about his irl stuff, but if you want to talk to someone about an MMO, he's pretty informed about GW2.

Kakirtog, the Charr in gold

(I'm no expert, but) if you're using after effects, you can attempt to use content aware fill to remove the plaster from your lips. Also, I think Mikey Meumann is a good call for the podcast thing.

How about a few folks who can talk about music in games? 8-Bit Music Theory might be a good one to talk about the role of music in games. Also I'm 100% sure Ryan Ike (composer for a bunch of indie games like Gunpoint, West of Loathing, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, Frog Fractions 2) would agree in a heartbeat to talk about what it's like being a working composer in the industry and what that dynamic is like.

barrence

Great video, shame we’re all going to die a prolonged and painful death

I'm wasting my money

At 8:31, I think you meant "antarctic" instead of "arctic." Greenland IS in the arctic.

You might want to add a statistic when you say individual efforts to curb climate change aren't as effective as political policies. That bit might seem politically motivated otherwise.

Tristan

Happy I am not the only person who can only think about climate change when they hear Smash Mouth's All Star...

Useless Himbo

at 8:30 you say ‘greenland is not faring as good as the arctic’. in context, it would seem you meant antarctic?

miko

So i enjoyed the video, it's a good video! Praise Sobek! Would it be unreasonable to call this the "ad-free backer version" in future if your curiousitystream sponsorship will continue?

Ash Rose

Oh yay! I was getting worried!

hamertime

I'm okay with a fleck of plaster on a lip. It's food I can't stand (for some reason). Thank you for clarifying... (I'm broken.)

Naomi Hatchman

But it's the truth though

ZaitsevFred

Ooh, what about Tarn Adams or Tynan Sylvester? I know they both have a lot of interesting things to say about game development. Also go on Chapo. Love your work as always, one of the few channels where I have to pause the video and think about things every so often whilst watching!

greydrake42

Aw, yes. Get that sweet sweet Hbomb into my mind veins!

This was very good. But it made me shout at my television screen a few times, which is not something I typically do.

Hotwheels Sisyphus

Heya, really enjoyed the video. One thing to add though, when you use phrases like "obviously wrong" it has the same ring as characters like Shapiro saying things are clearly irrational or illogical. I think you do a great amount of work in demonstrating why the points of deniers are wrong, so it may be better to say things like "provably wrong" before going on to prove it. Obviously it's fine to make fun of hacks and please continue doing so

Yayyyyyy your voice is back. A question: at like, 8:30 when you say Greenland isn't fairing as well as the arctic, do you mean antarctic ones? (you may not, i could be confused, but just checking).

It is 2am here and I definitely work tomorrow, guess I'll watch this 40 minute video

great video! not quite sure what the dog bit was about but thats fine. wonderful work. here is hoping that we dont all drown

Calysto

I second this, throw Jim Sterling in there too.

1000 points for the Goth Skunk cameo in the background of the Reasonableist Bear images!

PlaceholderPigeon

Hey, I totally recommend you try to interview Cara Ellison. She's Scottish but I believe she just moved to the US, and she's been involved in game development for quite a while. She wrote a book called Embed With Games about couchsurfing around the world and hanging out with indie devs, and I suspect she'd have a lot of interesting stuff to say.

Occam's Blazer

I don't understand Shapiro's appeal. He looks like a dweeb and sounds like a frickin' Muppet. Normally I wouldn't harp on someone's looks and voice, but I'm making the exception here because, oh I don't know, HIS ENTIRE APPEAL IS BUILT ON APPEARANCES AS OPPOSED TO SUBSTANCE. I honestly don't get it.

Michał Sporzyński

Congrats on the podcast! I would love for you to interview Matt (up is not jump) for obviously reasons but also Many A True Nerd and Nerd3 (cubed)!

LadyTato

TOTALLY agree re: working class people buying into it. it's wild honestly, living in bc with alberta pushing so damn hard for the trans mountain pipeline. I get the fear of a major hit to the economy, but it's also not bc's or the country's or the planet's fault that alberta's governments haven't implemented things like a provincial sales tax or done anything whatsoever to reduce the reliance on oil, and people just refuse to see that.

alexis

Pat, Matt or Woolie from former TwoBestFriends Lewis or AngoryTom from the Yogscast

You should get LauraKBuzz and Jim Sterling on for sure.

Dr. Teatime

Hey, you should interview David Logan for your games podcast. I feel like no one wants to talk about developing indie titles, everyone's too focused on call of duty and whatever else that all the indie stuff like Lisa gets passed over.

Interview Subjects: Get Video Game Dunkey to say Medicare For All is good. Or more seriously, I guess, is Tim Rogers available? Or Virgil Texas or Felix Biederman?

Rory Blank

I am here to also suggest Austin Walker, and also Dia Lacina, a Waypoint contributor and games writer at Paste.

Fantastic work as always, my dude! Slightly off topic but does that shirt that Crowder sells just say "socialism is for f*gs"? Am I missing something? Like, is there a pun I didn't catch or some other play on wordad? For once in my life I'm being completely genuine and not sarcastic at all but I am having a hard time believing that his merch is nothing more than a middle school insult. Even for him that just feels low but hey, at least he censored it so it isn't offensive. At all. As for the video, I remember hearing a priest preach about "Christlike patience" and I don't think I ever fully knew what that was until I watched you wade into this pool of bullshit and not completely snap so thank you for doing what you do. Lord knows I don't have the patience (let alone intelligence) to debunk this so thoroughly. Keep up the great work and thank you for making these!

Big Nov

'This led me down a hole of discovery.' Honestly I was 1000% sure you were gonna say hole of despair.

D E Wright

shaun as a big daddy skeptic dog makes me uncomfortable

TommyTheDude

as a big gay lesbian flirting with leftism i....must resist ironically buying a Socialism is for Fags shirt...

Finn Chitwood

Fantastic video, as usual, Hbomb. I've watched it twice, but I haven't been able to get through the Aquaman joke without lol'ing. The section discussing the Iceland ice mass figure was really strong too. As a scientist, those tricks are particularly maddening. I'm not sure how you could have worked it in but I was a little sad that you weren't able to discuss how a lot of working-class people buy into climate denial because their livelihoods depend on it. I'm Albertan and even though most Albertans aren't directly employed by the fossil fuel industry, there are entire towns here that depend heavily on jobs associated with fossil fuel production or ones that require the demand that comes when fossil fuel production ramps up. Couple this with the fact that there is little appetite in the public discourse for imagining a better type of society that doesn't tie living standards (or just living for that matter) to a person's or community's usefulness to capital, then any mention of climate change action feels like a personal attack. I think this kind of desperate, willful antagonism and ignorance is an interesting (and extremely frustrating) component of climate denial that could maybe use more discussion. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that this video connected with me and got me thinking, so thanks!

Dustin Morrill

Justin and Griffin McElroy from the Monster Factory.

Great video. And if you want to make it up to us for not having the Night in the Woods video completed yet, you could bring Bethany, Alec, and Scott onto your podcast. Y'know.

Prestidigititis

Ally Mclean is absurdly talented and has a unique perspective on how she entered the game dev sphere. That'd be my vote.

Josh

Such a relief that hbomb has finally introduced the Spectre of Death as a casual background element in his videos

I second Austin Walker, he’s great and very podcast experienced haha

this was really really good!! and I really needed it today honestly. thanks!

Please, please interview Anita Sarkeesian. Failing that, Yahtzee. Or Jim Sterling.

Wakelyn

you should interview Neil Cicireiga

Holly s

Andrew Yang is a great pull!

Sam Humleker

In terms of interviewing games folks a number of people come to mind: Jay Tholen: the creator of Dropsy and Hypnospace Outlaw Josh Sawyer: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity Kitty HorrorShow: The creator of the criminally underrated Anatomy and Chyrza (along with a bunch of other fantastic free horror games on Itch.io) Jon Ingold: Co-founder of Inkle Studios and writer of 80 Days and Heaven’s Vault SonicFox: Needs no introduction. The only good gamer. Austin Walker: Editor-in-Chief of Waypoint Brian David Gilbert: Polygon video editor and creator of the brilliant series: Unravelled Rebecca Cordingley: Creator of the upcoming game Ooblets Zoe Quinn: Depression Quest, Goddess Mode, and all around badass

Sam Humleker

I think you should absolutely get a hold of the twitch stream/former YouTube LPers WoolieVersus and AngriestPat! They've mentioned you on their podcast after the charity stream so I think it'd be neat if you got in touch with them.

Breeze McMothman

yess new hbomb! also potential podcast people: Laura Kate Dale, Sarah Zedig, Mia Mulder, Griffin McElroy, Brian David Gilbert, Andrew Yang?

minohoonoo

You should interview Brian David Gilbert from Polygon dot com.

Natalie Smyk

Welp, so much for sleep. Also, number one interview suggestion: Lowtax.

Lance Hunter

You HAVE to interview Josh Sawyer. In addition to being an incredibly interesting listen, it would also be extremely on-brand. Chris Avellone, Jason Schreier, Noah Gervais, Austin Walker, and Cecilia D'Anastasio would also be really cool interviewees.

Greg S.

Hbomb definitely try to talk to Danny O’Dwyer

Talia P

Yes! Hail Sobek! A climate denier response, finally!

Oh tight. I was just thinking “i wonder when HBomb will have some nice new content”

Rory Blank

Oh shiiiiiiiiiit. Watching!

thank you king

Holly s

ITS HAPPENING

If you are talking to people about video games, I'd like to hear you talk to the team behind Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. That game blew my mind, and deserves as much attention as possible.

I haven't watched it yet, but great video! I should get to playing Night in the Woods...

Saga Nørgaard

IM ABOUT TO SLEEP HOW CAN DO YOU POST THIS NOW
