Flat Earth Outtakes!

Hiya!

Here's a collection of things I cut for time or other reasons from the Flat Earth video. Some of it was in the backer edition, but some of it was cut even earlier than that. Some parts are very unfinished, and comes with explanations for why it was cut.

I leave a lot of stuff on the cutting room floor and don't normally like showing this much because it's like, uh, you're my backers, I want the extra stuff you get to be good and not just the stuff I decided wasn't good enough to be in a video, but I thought it would be interesting to share a bit more of the process than normal. Eighteen minutes. Geez

Flat Earth Outtakes!

Comments

I rediscovered chaphop this year, I completely forgot about it, I had a big steampunk phase in like 2009 and i listened to Fighting Trousers and Cup of Brown Joy for weeks. Idk anything about that guy but those were catchy songs.

I found the Ailsa Craig part to actually be a very intuitive explanation because its easy to understand under a spherical earth assumption, but very hard with a flat earth frame of reference But i might be biased cause i live near it and have sailed around it!

The display on the airplane showed Std but the mach was .79 and I feel so teased.

"and i might not make the video about antivaxxers" holy shit he was thinking about that video all the way back here

I think the Pac-Man joke you were looking for was ‘get away from Inky Blinky Pinky and Sobek’

"I just remembered chap hop" professor Elemental has entered the chat

Nowhere Girl

AILSA CRAIG! That bit absolutely made my day. I'm catching up on your Patreon and I love that big hunk of sea granite and that explanation was particularly interesting. Nice to know my favorite uninhabited island can also serve as an example to disprove flat earth theory. Absolutely delightful, cheers

This is wonderful, and I will be forever grateful for the anti-vaxxer "pointless jab" joke which I will steal and inflict on my kids LIKE NOT GETTING POLIO

So it's likely you won`'t see this but you should look into Gnosticism and Marcionism. They believed that the inconsistencies between the Old and New Testament pointed to parts of the Bible being written by the Devil or some other being since God is infallible and as such cannot commit a contradiction.

So I'm finally getting around to watching the content that I actually pay you for, and I want to say that A. I adore all of this, and but also B. I'm really glad it didn't make it into the public version. I feel like the more conversational, almost vloggy style you get into in some of these doesn't really jibe with the snappier pace that usually characterizes your Measured Response videos. (And just so you don't double-weight my opinion, I was one of the people suggesting the pace needed tightening in the comments of the backer version.) I'd be interested in you spinning off the Gish Gallop stuff into its own video essay, though of course it wouldn't really work as a Measured Response.

I’m just gonna say I think the island thing is cool. I seriously struggle with big picture stuff, I routinely have to measure things in “Connors” cos my partner happens to be 2m tall and that’s the easiest way for me to put things in context for myself, but even then, I struggle. Actually having such a quick, easily and clearly visible example was really handy, cos when I think about it, yes, water is flat cos gravity, but land can also be behind/beneath water on the horizon, but without the example it takes a lot longer for my brain to reach that conclusion itself.

Just reading about the Twitch Stream for Mermaids and AOC dropping in...Kinda freaking out about it all. So very cool!

Please tell me "choo choo" is a reference to that one Alton Towers ride. Genuinely the highlight of every trip there.

*That's* why I've had Fighting Trousers echoing in my head for three days...

I can't believe anyone other than just me, literally just me, listened to chap hop intentionally.

Sata Prescott

B.O.B. had a barely visible pop career in the 2000s. I don't think I'd blame anyone for not knowing who he is

King Dead

That sounds neat! I'll try to remember to contact you when I need something!

Thanks. It's nice seeing people's takes on when I should have left something in, so I appreciate that

Hbomb

Yeah, agreeing with the patreones: great job, thanks for releasing these cuts after editing!

i rly liked the Ailsa Craig bit, but I agree that most of these cuts are better for pacing. the backer version was a bit too heavy on the self-aware jokes i feel

I think, for videos like this one (where you have to do a lot of exposition before you get into the debunking of the actual ideology) a more long form casual approach is better. The backer version was good for this, I think, because when you edited out the funnier bits and tangents it felt a little dry. It seemed like you stepped out of your comfort zone to do a video like this, and I appreciate that a lot since it's not just you following the trend of leftist YouTube channels making the same points about the far right over and over. But your comedic and casual approach is really good, I think, and you should play to that strength more.

I appreciate you removing the bit about vaccines. Just kind of a non-sequitir.

i did the back of the napkin calculations and got about 314km, or about 1000000 feet in freedom units. someone probably answered already but i needed to rattle the maths part of my brain a little. cheers!

Yams are huge in Japan too you ignorant gaijin. It's really interesting seeing this, hope you do this again for future videos. I've only seen the backer version, but all the stuff you cut from it I went "yeah, it probably is a better video without that".

Sad to see the earplugs bit go.

yablko

i really enjoyed this! particularly the longer tangents feel more like you're just telling us about this stuff very casually, somewhat like having an interesting chat with someone at a party (the parties i go to might just be odd). please give us more longer outtakes for your next videos!

Sunny

i only watched the backer version and i was dying that your friend's printer broke right afterwards LOL honestly i took it as implied that the printer refused to cooperate with printing such garbage as flat earth maps

surasshu

rehashing previously made videos would be on brand for a video about flat earth

Great work!

Dave

18 minutes is definitely not too long. Your public videos can be quite long, and I've just payed real money to essentially extend them. More long outtakes pls!

Using a longest point-to-point (arc) distance of 792 mi for the UK (pulled from google earth), and assuming 144 degrees width of vision, I got a smaller figure: 108 miles high. Or, 244 miles for a 12mm lens on a 35mm body. Not accounting for the curve, and if vision were cone-shaped, he could see about 5,230 square miles of the UK, or 5.6% of it. After those inaccuracies, maybe 6%. Interestingly, the difference between the longest arc length and the distance straight through the earth is about a mile and a half, so the curve doesn't make much of a difference. I'm pursuing a degree in applied statistics and I would love to do statistics/data analysis for a video. Just send a PM if you're interested.

Some of this was pretty good, but I'm kinda really glad the part about American food being shit was cut because seemed super dismissive and ignorant of a lot of the different peoples and cultures who call the US home, as well as the sheer breadth of diversity in this country. Like, just off the top of my head two distinctly American cuisines are Barbecue (specifically southern US styles), Cajun food, Native American foods (because they're still Americans and it's still American food), or any of the countless fusion cuisines that exist. Like yeah, white America exists and generally has some pretty bland English, Irish, and German food roots and isn't really original. But there's plenty that *is* original. Plus, a lot of Japanese foods are basically Japanese fusion with other cultures they've encountered in the past. Bulldog Sauce, the stuff that comes with tonkatsu is Japanese Worcestershire sauce.

The laugh after remembering chap hop was wonderful.

I don't think the "gallop" argument is either weak or provides a contradiction and it would have been worth including from an argumentative standpoint (from a presentation or pacing perspective, perhaps not) -- this is a common tactic even in academic environments and collegiate debating circuits and responding with a lengthy video isn't bad; you're not entertaining their arguments with your long video because you're not choosing to respond to every argument. You even set up a framework -- any flat earther needs to account for the physical phenomena you describe before moving forward. I think it's argumentatively tight. Anyway, I appreciate these outtake videos. Thank you.

Please don't worry about showing us your 'bad outtakes', it's always fun to see this stuff

Paypal is the only way I can ever give you money, Harris. Thank Sobek for the internet.
