The lettering of the sound effect makes me think something Big powering up and generating something wide spreading . . . and from their reactions, I'm thinking some kind of "experimental anti-meta radiation" effect . . . fur frazzling, sudden unsteadiness, and possible flashes of vertigo . . . if your going against metas, first thing is disorientation.
